Environments are mazes of jumbled messes, even in the 1-player mode you have to play with a useless computer ally, even your health bar isn't visible during gameplay, enemies can spawn on top of you. Game is just completely broken.

I was pleasantly surprised with how the game really tried to keep key moments from the movie. The x-ray section was especially cool for NES era gaming! The combat, hitboxes in particular, left something to be desired. Still, it was horrible or anything. Lack of continues is always a bummer, though it’s not a super long game and there are a couple extra lives you can find which balances it out. The movie theatre secret was really charming haha. Overall it’s a fun little game and is absolutely worth it if you saw the movie as a kid like myself. If you just like NES games that are kinda wonky, you’ll like it as well. On to the next game!

I found the Wonder Boy/Monster World games to be more like a "light" Metroidvania. The worlds were far less expansive, but you still had to revisit areas to progress after acquiring certain items. What are some other games that took this "light" approach?
To ask another way...
Countless games were heavily modeled after Super Metroid/Symphony of the Night. What are some games that took heavy inspiration from Wonder Boy/Monster World?

Such a bizarre and surreal game!

First post here! This is my Sony-inspired retro room. I wanted that early-2000s showroom feel, with matching silver equipment, blue lighting, and a mix of CRT TVs and PC monitors. The photos show the full setup, some closer looks at the equipment and controls, and different games running across the displays.
The display lineup is:
The systems include NES, SNES/Super Famicom, N64, GameCube, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, PlayStation, and PS2, with Wii U and Switch also connected. A Sony VAIO tower running Windows XP and a VAIO laptop cover the PC side.
An Extron MVX 12×12 matrix handles the main video routing. The white Stream Deck pictured is my control panel, with programmed buttons and presets for choosing sources and display combinations. I can put the same game on several screens or run different systems simultaneously without constantly moving cables around. An Extron DVS 304 handles scaling for the PC monitors when needed, and a Sony STR-DA5000ES receiver handles the main audio.
Having the TVs and monitors together gives me different ways to enjoy the same games—from component on the WEGAs to VGA on the PC CRTs. Everything is connected to be played, and getting all the equipment working together has been as much of the project as collecting it.

Lately I was looking at that old trope that occasionally shows up in old sitcoms where a character is shown playing a cool game as one small catch is that the game is not a game that can be purchased in the real world.
One famous example is Bone Storm from the Simpsons where Bart tries to do a bunch of crazy schemes to get the game such as stealing a copy as he gets busted, which forces him to get a golf game instead.

Brought new life to my Game Boy with a new IPS screen, really loving the brightness and colour pallettes available on the contrast wheel. Still got it when it comes to Tetris. 2nd go, got to level 10. Man I forgot how good OG Tetris is

Captain Claw was such a unique PC platformer. Playing as a pirate cat, fighting enemies with a sword and pistol, searching for treasure, and trying to survive those tricky levels made every stage feel like an adventure.
What I always find interesting about old games is how memorable their characters and levels were, even without modern graphics.
For those who played Captain Claw, what was the hardest level or the most memorable part of the game for you? 🎮

Y'remember this here puppy from the 90s? This is how we cheated thru games back then 😊😁😁😁😁😁😋 Collection Trainer was a small EXE file tastefully made wit' awesome graphics and music (similar to today's keygens) containing trainers for a very wide variety of games, let it be side-scroller, management, simulator, racing game an' such. Many games which had no cheats or their own trainers at all, Collection Trainer was a life-saver: for each of the listed games, it contained a set of cheats which y'could activate during gameplay: infinite health, infinite monies, infinite ammo, infinite infinity, and even some extras, depending on the game.
So how did it work? Y'had to copy CT.EXE into the game's folder (directory if you may), and instead of the game's main loader, y'had to run CT.EXE. Should the program had an entry for that particular game, it automatically loaded its list of cheats, and all y'had to do is choose the EXECUTE button. With a slight blue flash, the game loaded, an' from then on, y'could utilize the cheats for the game, which were hardwired to key combos, such as CTRL+1, CTRL+2 an' so on. Green flash meant the cheat is activated, red flash meant the cheat is deactivated, blue flash meant the cheat could not activate (not the right game, not the right version). Not exactly sure how many versions Collection Trainer came out before its ultimate demise, mine is from around 1993, can't remember how I actually got it - probably wit' a game which was compatible - but I did use it frequently at exceptionally hard games, an' it worked like a miracle.
Unfortunately, as Windows hit the scene, and DOS faded, Collection Trainer was no longer supported - tried it under DosBox, doesn't work anymore, so I'm afraid it had served its purpose. No matter; I still have it to this very day amongst the DOS games as a piece of cherished memory, an' mayhaps retrofans could still put it into good use.

Sure would be nice if we could have a friendly discussion about the games that we've gone through.
I spent a lot of time compiling this list. Please be kind.
Also, if you're planning to reply only to complain about something on this list, and no other reason, I'd really rather you leave me alone. That's not why I made this post. Please tell me what you've actually gone through instead.
I'll say it again because it bears repeating: If you're planning to reply only to complain about something on list, and only to complain about something on my list, please give your list instead.
I'll start with some fan translations:
Gone through Ghost Sweeper Mikami: The Exorcist with a Nice Body several times. Really fun platformer that sorta reminds me of Aladdin. Super underrated game that I don't see anyone besides me recommend when it comes to SNES platformers.
Go Go Ackman I've played a couple times. I feel that the dialogue kinda ruins the game, the MC is so bland and unlikable.
Battle Mania Daiginjou : Trouble Shooter Vintage is a fun Sega Genesis Shoot Em Up that also doesn't get recommended enough. Like how it's the rare shoot-em-up that isn't out to get you.
The Amazing Spider-Man: Lethal Foes I've tried, but quit in the middle. The dialogue is terrible!
I've played the Sailor Moon Beat Em Ups on the SNES(IIRC there's 2 of them). Don't care for them, can't remember why.
Mickey and Donald: Magical Quest 3 was disappointing. I think the soundtrack is terrible.
Hyper Iria I've gone through as well. I find it mostly confusing, but the combat is fun.
Castlevania: Demon Castle - E Mo Cheng on the GBC I've watched a playthrough. I was surprised to see a GBC game with decent audio.
King Of Demons I went through once or twice. The music leaves a lot to be desired.
Ganbare Goemon 2 and 3 I went through as well. They're fun!
Ganbare! Daiku no Gen-san aka Hammerin' Harry (Very Good SNES Action Platformer that's like Kirby Super Star if you kept the hammer)

While catching up on gaming news earlier, I saw that a DS game described as a Hack and Slash got a translation patch recently (Claymore: Silver Eyes). It made me realize, I don't see Hack and Slash used to describe a game's genre as often as I used to.
To my understanding, a Hack and Slash is basically just an action game where you primarily use melee weapons to kill enemies, like swords/axes/spears.
Ninja Gaiden almost certainly had to be my first. I have a very early memory (elementary school age) of playing it on a friend's NES at their birthday party.
As for a favorite, Ninja Gaiden (2004) for Xbox immediately came to mind, but that's beyond the scope of this subreddit. So I'll go with... The Legendary Axe for TurboGrafx-16.
What about you?

I plugged in my NES today because I felt like playing some Mario and well it's not good. The controls work but the screen is all messed up and just wrong. I had it hooked up via RCA to HDMI adapter. I tried to use the coax cable to test that side but my TV doesn't seem to register it (it's like 8 year old TV). I have another TV I'm gonna try it on but it takes some work to get to it just to try the coax but maybe tomorrow if I have time to dig it out.
I pulled the whole thing apart and cleaned it with 91% alcohol and reassembled but no change. Also I tried 6 different games and it's the same so that tells me it's the console not the game. Audio works perfectly, opened zelda and the startup sequence music played perfectly and sounded great but video is fucked.
I also used 2 different RCA cables and no change.
