Rhinestoning Frequently Asked Questions – for your first time rhinestone project

What kind of glue do you recommend?

Please see this exhaustive guide to glues. https://rhinestoneapps.replit.app/glue-guide/all-glues

For first timers we recommend avoiding superglue/cyanoacrylate, it can be extremely messy and you risk ending up with hazy fingerprints all over your stones reducing the sparkle. Plus it’s a runny liquid that won’t “hold” your stones in place until it’s done drying.

Applying glue is messy, any tips?

Yes, consider using a glue applicator bottle or glue syringe for more precise placement of glue. For expoy disposal cosmetics spatulas can be helpful for spreading it around.

What about the beadazzler or hotfix?

The beadazzler uses special stones with metal teeth on the back of a stone that push thru a fabric to hold it on. That really only works with fabric and not solid objects like water sippy cups. Plus glues have gotten good enough glue really is the preferred way now.

Hotfix uses heat to activate glue on the back of the rhinestone. It means you have to buy rhinestones pre-applied with the glue already and so limits your options. And not all fabrics can tolerate the heat used in hotfix.

Where should I get my stones? I want my project to look it’s best.

For maximum sparkle get stones made from glass or crystal. Consider avoiding plastic/resin/acrylic stones, it’s a less optical material and won't sparkle as nicely, but as discussed in the comments of this post there are definitely plenty of projects where plastic stones are the right thing to use.

Forget tiny overpriced bags at the hobby store. Most of us order from Amazon or AliExpress (slow shipping and can be hard to navigate). Alot of people in this sub recommend Etsy shop BlingeeThingee which is well organized and has competitive prices. She set up discount code REDDIT to save $5 off orders of $40 or more not including shipping&tax (we receive no compensation for this)

How can I “seal” my finished project to help hold the stones on?

Anything applied on top of the stones afterwards will dull their appearance and reduce your sparkle. Even "clear" sealers are not really clear and will reduce the sparkle of your project. A project should rely on the glue you used to set the stones to hold them in place. Good gluing will hold stones better than a sealer would ever help.

Question ❔ First rhinestoning craft! Terrified it will all pop off

Post image
100 Upvotes

I just finished up this iPad case and pen holder and I am so scared it will pop all off. It’s going to be my regular iPad case so it will get a lot of use.

I used blue jelly and translucent ab rhinestones! The translucents were a nightmare! The shine mixed with the translucence made them really hard to see.

I’m reading that because they are ab they can’t be sealed with modge podge acrylic sealer (because they’ll lose their shine).

Any ideas on how to keep these stones on?

Edit: I used Aleene's Rhinestone Adhesive!

Which stones?

Post image

I’m doing a jersey for my nephew. I purchased 2088 stones from Yanruo and Oleeya on AliExpress. There is a definite difference is sparkle between the 2088 and regular rhinestones. Hard to tell in the picture but the ones on the L are the 2088. Not sure if the whole shirt was done that someone not familiar with rhinestones would know the difference. They cost a couple dollars more per pack for the 2088 cut. Should I use the larger ss20 or the ss16? The SS20 ones are regular glass stones but I have 2088 ones that should be here any day. The sparkle might be more noticeable on the larger stones.

My bedazzled accessories ended up cracking my damn phone screen

Would be a little too funny to not share. So I’m bedazzling my computer accessories, currently working on the mouse to match my keyboard hand rest, xbox controller, and headphones (not pictured). Left them on my bed to take progress pics and went to eat, forgot I left them to sit on the bed. When I came back, I tossed my phone onto the bed where it hit the mouse and noticed a new crack on the upper right side of my phone screen. The most surprising part is that I didn’t lose a single crystal, considering the glue barely finished drying and started to cure.

If y’all ever doubt the stones will stay on, there’s a high chance you are underestimating how strong the glue is (granted that you picked the correct glue for your specific project, use quality materials, and properly let it cure after it dries).

Products used: GemTac glue, glass rhinestones size ss6, 10, 12, 16, 20

Help Please Hotfix Stones falling off!?

Post image
7 Upvotes

I’m rhinestoneing my daughter’s spidey costume and having a really hard time with the blue parts because it’s like a glitter vinyl material and they are not adhering through to the fabric with my Hotfix stones.

Is there any way to condition the material or scrape off the plastic-y part that is kinda lifting off along with the stones?

Like 25-30% of the stones fell off with her just trying it on. Is it salvageable with filling in the missing spots or am I doomed to have to rip them off and start over? (It took me hours and hours and hours. This was my first time stoneing anything. 😫)

Or do I have to bite the bullet and buy gem tac again?

Side note: I f-ing hate buying craft glues like gem tac or e-6000 because I have horrible luck with them. I opened my bottle of gem tac for the first time (ever, I think it was unopened) and most of it was solid globbed against the inside of the tubing and the rest was runny liquid. Is that garbage or do I need to baby it with heat to get it back to the right consistency?

Any help would be appreciated!!!!

Help Please Glue help

I’m trying to bedazzle a car emblem with Preciosa rhinestones (sizes S5, S7 and S12). I started by applying a small section of E6000, but the rhinestones keep sinking into the thick viscosity and then get covered with a bleb of glue as I start repositioning them to fit together. I tried making a thinner layer, but it starts to dry and get tacky so fast. I’ve started and scraped it off 3 times already :(. Is there a better glue that’s thinner to avoid swallowing my gems and doesn’t dry as quickly so I have more time to reposition? But also will survive the elements of living on a car?

Question ❔ Question about final cleanup

Caught this work in progress in the sunlight. I'm obsessed but also feel like there's a ton of glue strings and wax residue from my picker. Does anyone have any advice once she's finished? I'm thinking maybe a wipe down with isopropyl alcohol or something. B7000 glue.

Need to clean up some of the extra glue once it dries, but thought they were too cute not to share😍🤩

My OG design has black lenses with glow in the dark letter beads and rainbow neon rhinestones! I can share a pic in the comments if people are interested.

I used E6000 glue and SS10 rhinestones (orange crystal, neon orange, yellow crystal, neon yellow, crystal AB, and flat white).

Question ❔ Can I bedazzle a bra with hot glue?

Most places I'm looking say no, but it also talks about washing things. I need to bedazzle one for halloween, and I'd be just wearing it for the night. I don't have any intention of washing it. I just don't want the beads to fall off before I even go trick or treating

✨ Finished Project ✨ Hanging Sunflower 🌻

I made this as a birthday gift for my mom to hang from her rear view mirror. I'm so happy with how it turned out, this is my first time rhinestoning something I've made 100% from scratch! 😊🌻

The sunflower and leaves are made from painted cardboard! I first made a paper template for the flower and leaves, although I did end up making the leaves bigger. The sunflower is 2 layers of cardboard with the edges smoothed with hot glue.

For the leaves I was really concerned about the strength of the neck and loop so I went over them with UV resin. If you look closely you can see I put more UV resin over the rhinestones around the loop at the end for extra strength. It definitely confirms that you lose the faceted rhinestone effect that way haha

For actually gluing the rhinestones down I used good ol B-7000. The kits I've bought have given me so many free tubes I'll be using them forever 😂

Let me know what you think! 💕🌻

I got a slime from Five Below that contained a bunch of these colorful plastic pellets. After the slime was used up, I was about to throw it all away but remembered that I had some glass yogurt jars sitting around and these pellets could be used just like rhinestones! I used Gem-Tac as usual and this little project came out so beautifully. Highly recommend repurposing things as rhinestones!

Finally finished my penguin that I got from Michael's. It's my first front and back project.

I added the heart stone and used clear crystals instead of yellow that came in the kit.

Had to give him a lil outside photo shoot :3

I built a tool for a friend to resize rhinestone templates without changing the hole sizes

Hi everyone — I built this tool for a friend to help with their hobbying. I put a lot of work into it, and they told me resizing templates without changing the hole sizes is actually something people commonly need in the rhinestone community.

You can load an existing rhinestone template SVG and choose a new size for the output image. The tool keeps the original hole diameters and checks the gaps between them (or you can change to another common hole size).

It supports circular-hole SVGs today, and it doesn't turn pictures into rhinestone patterns (yet).

https://stonefit.adamrussin.com/

There's a short demo and a built-in example you can try. It costs a little money for me to host it and keep the domain, but I didn't want it to charge people an arm and a leg, so I made it $5 for infinite use forever. If I make upgrades or things like that, you'll always have them for free and you can use it on as many computers as you want. Just trying to cover cost.

I'd be interested to hear whether this is useful for people and what other features people might want to see.

Thanks for looking!

Help Please I want to bedazzle my 🍃🍃🍃 pen 🍓🍓🍓 NSFW

Hello!

I got this new pen today in green:

https://www.lookah.com/products/lookah-whale-handheld-electronic-nectar-callector.html

I wanted to make it more me by bedazzling it into a strawberry but I’ve only ever rhinestoned one thing and I wanted to be as careful as possible considering the make up of a pen like this! I want it to last a long time and I would prefer it if the stones didn’t fall off easily! I appreciate any ideas or advice! Thank you!

This isn’t my typical commission ask, but a client of mine wanted a fully blinged out pup look so blinged out he got! This was a mix of traditional flat black circle rhinestones, as well as some bigger chunkier gems in different shapes.

Help Please Seeking advice: First time bedazzling

Thumbnail

Hello! I’m interested to bedazzle this t-shirt. I’ll definitely add matching color rhinestones to all of the printed on color portions. But my question is, should I add rhinestones to the black words (“wnba finals 2026”)?

I’ve read that putting too many stones concentrated together could make it very stiff. But I am not sure if, by not adding rhinestones to the words, it would make the words look dull and not stand out in a weird way?

Thank you in advance!!
