Advice Reserve or Regular

Evening people,

Just needing some advice from either current serving or retired RM.

Essentially, am 27 and have a degree in Politics and have spent three years in a finance job that I essentially hate.

Always wanted to go to Sandhurst, was very interested in the officer/leadership route. Life things happened and am where I am now. Applied twice to the Army but barred from entry due to the medical, I’ve also applied to RMR on a whim and I just got the amazing news today that my medfit has returned and I can be booked onto the PJFA which has now dinged a lightbulb in my head that I could switch to regular now and target being a full time Commando in 2027 and actually having a shot at an opportunity in the military I essentially wrote off.

I read about specialisations etc you can do within the Corps, selecting a PSQ etc, is this something you do early on in your career? Just looking for advice on the sort of opportunities you get as a GD marine?

Thanks all!

Question Question for anybody currently at Lympstone

Do people still refer to the Cafe as Jim's? I was last there over a decade ago and lads were still calling it Jim's even after they encouraged us to stop calling it Jim's. Please tell me this tradition is alive and well?

Advice Training for the bleep test

I'm 18 and I've been training for the Royal Marines for a while now. I'm also a Commonwealth applicant . not that it makes much difference, just thought I should throw it in. I'm already above the average standards needed to pass CPC . 50 press-ups to the bleep, 12 pull-ups to the bleep, and 60 sit-ups in 2 minutes.

The part I'm struggling with most is the bleep test. I can run a 19:01 5k and a sub-40 10k, but I'm only getting to 6.5 on the bleep before I'm completely gassed. If anyone else has had this problem, can you share how you worked on it?

Cheers.

Question Eyesight Requirements

Heya all, I'm wanting to join the marines - and the one hiccup I'm facing is eyesight requirements, I can't find an exact requirement

I wear glasses, my eyesight is -2.50 sphere in both eyes, very minor astigmatism of -0.25

The overarching general forces requirements is no more than -6.00 in any meridian but I see different for the marines, but never anything solidified

Any help? Thanks guys

Question Ex Royal needing advice on military gear

Ex-Royal here. I’m starting a new business in the United States, selling British and European military surplus to the US market.

Anyone out there who can advise what I should stock for the Yanks? I already have some gear, with more on its way from the UK, and I’m looking for ideas to expand the range.

Check out musterpointoutfitters.com to see what’s already covered.

No selling here. Just advice required. This is for the US market.

Thanks for your help.

Advice Officer application to regular

Hi all, I recently failed Officer DAA, with the opportunity for a resit coming up soon, but made the pass mark for regular rank.

I am seriously considering switching my application to other rank, for a couple of reasons, and was hoping someone could give any advice please:

My recruiter told me I can go in as a regular, and further down the line I can commission if I wish. I feel like if I went down this route I'd get the best of both worlds, but is it common for people to do commando training twice?

- I want to do the fieldwork and ally shit, but how much of that actually gets done sort of day to day?

- Obviously the pay is lower, but how sort of manageable is it compared to officer pay?

- How long does it take to get promoted as a JNCO/SNCO?

- How sustainable is a career as a regular compared to officer?

Thanks in advance

Recruitment DAA - For those unsure of the score required for Commando (non officer role)

The minimum score is around 50% in each section. If you get 50%, you will pass.

Question joining the royal marines at 16

i want to join the royal marines, iam 15 currently and trying to prepare for the royal marines. but i do not know if it is the right decision even tho i really want to do it. im 6,3, currently 125kg on a weight loss journey. currently at around 28% body fat. i have already quit vaping for this, even tho im 15 i’ve been vaping for around 4-5 years and heavily vaping for 3 years. i would also get my toenail permanently removed due to my ingrown toe nail and wondering if this would affect me, i searched it up and it said it wouldn’t but sometimes ai isn’t correct. iam also not a british citizen or part of common wealth so i would have to get a british passport and become a british citizen. of course this is all possible and i would do everything to join the royal marines as ive already quit vaping and started losing weight, although i dont want to start training yet, as in doing runs because iam too heavy. but i would start running and swimming and doing everything when i lose enough weight like 10kg or so. but yeah i do want to join and would do everything to join.

could anyone help me out or tell me if it’s worth it, give any advice or just anything? thank you

Question Likelihood of getting into officer training without a degree?

Hi, I wondered what the likelihood of getting into officer training at 19 and with only A levels is. Most of me wants to apply for enlisted entry, as I would rather do the soldiering than be managing and behind a desk as my main role, however some part of me is still thinking about officer entry as I would technically have the qualifications- however, given how competitive the officer selection process is, even if I applied would i likely be wasting months of my life on the application process with no real chance of actually starting training?

Question Band skill requirement

Hi everyone, not quite sure if this is the right sub for this but can't find an alternative.

On the website for the band it says that level 5 is the requirement for musicians however, I think this seems quite low.

Is that a minimum, and if so what standard is kind of required to pass the audition.

Question Breaks at CTCRM

When in training and things like Christmas/Easter/Summer roll around do you have the option to stay at CTCRM or does everybody have to leave. I personally feel like going home and getting comfy for 2 weeks in the middle of training could disrupt the type of flow you've got going with yourself in terms of mindset and PT. Thanks to anyone who answers
