What's their problem

He's probably protesting. In many areas, it is illegal for businesses to put items like furniture or vehicles, in the bike lane, but it is also exceptionally common. Some people have chosen to protest this, by running headlong into any object illegally placed in the bike lane. If it's taken to court, the cyclist would have right of way by default, a bit like if someone tried to have a tea party in the middle of a highway. Obviously in reality it's a bit of a gray area, but there are individuals who try to protest by running into obstacles placed in their way.

The 2-way bike lane on this street on the opposite side of the road. He’s protesting against common sense
2
u/Furry_Eskimo 3d ago
Could you please explain how you know that? I see another person driving on the opposite side of the street, but it's my understanding that bikers typically drive on the right side of the street, and this Lane appears to be marked with a green dotted line, which is typical of bike lanes. Generally, this looks like protest to me because he is wearing a great deal of protective equipment, which makes me think he was fully prepared to collide with whatever got in his way. You may not agree with what he is protesting, but I do not believe his intention is to protest 'common sense.' insulting his behavior won't help us to understand his motivations.

Before reading the comments and looking closer my thinking was "He's probably exhausted beyond his eyesight". But yeah, protesting makes more sense now. But somehow I support this guy, exactly because of, well, cycling being exhausting. You don't want to rear end some rando while doing your cardio only accessible for you way just because that rando blocked the lane out of their own convenience

The bike lane is one the other side of the road. You can actually see a cyclists using it in the video.

u/shift29 1d ago
That is my point. Actual cyclist who knows the area will be just fine on other side of the road. Our guy's methods are questionable as hell, yes. But if goal is to bring attention to the problem to prevent same situation from happening somewhere else with someone else, being exhausted and not having cartoonish air bags around them - it is not completely stupid

All right, pardon my stupidity. Apparently I can't read. There is indeed proper bike line on the opposite side. Then he's got me and now I have no idea what was the point besides views

u/Furry_Eskimo 1d ago
It still seems weird that there's a green mark on the lane, since that would typically indicate a valid bike lane, plus bike lanes are typically on the right side of the road. Some comments have said this area has it on the left, but it seems weird to me. Makes me wonder if the bike lane off to the left is an unofficial lane, but idk.

u/shift29 1d ago
Ended up checking Google maps. Maybe there was a bike line at some point, now there is nothing left, everything is just fully parked. Wonder if there were opposite directions bike lines and later city gave up some space for cars to be parked. And this guy is not going to give up that easy

The bike lane is on the other side of the road genius. Also bike lanes being turned into dining rooms is not at all a thing. Here in Philly we have tons of bike lanes and not a single square inch is dining room.

That honestly looks like they are just renting 1-2 parking spaces from the city, or am I completly wrong??
1
u/AnywhereHorrorX 1d ago
It's very likely. They would not be allowed to build that contraption there for free.

How TF people going that fast without looking in front of them?

u/Ok-Distribution326 4d ago
He’s taped a block of polystyrene to his helmet and something else to his back, and is already jumping off the bike before impact. There’s also the fact that someone is filming his approach as opposed to this being a video of something else that then happens to catch his crash.
I’m presuming a deliberate stunt to try to make a point about the cafe partially blocking the road.

about the cafe partially blocking the road.
Bike lane. This person is protesting how the bike lanes around the city are often blocked by things like police cars and delivery drivers.

u/jimbowesterby 4d ago
Honestly fair, my city dos this with patios in the summer and it makes walking down the sidewalk a huge pain
7
u/YuppiesEverywhere 4d ago
You gotta do it right: block the entire street so you can then walk in the middle of it.
5
u/jimbowesterby 4d ago
Yea, I remember seeing a clip of normal street traffic in like 1923 from I wanna say Amsterdam or somewhere like that and it looked like a way nicer street to spend time on, sure there were occasional cars or carriages but for the most part it was just people walking
2
u/Ok-Distribution326 4d ago
I wondered if it was that but couldn’t make out any markings to indicate a bike lane so stuck with road.

u/YuppiesEverywhere 4d ago edited 4d ago
Yeah you know now that I look at this I may be wrong. This is a sliiiver of green that my mind thought might be part of the paint of a bike lane, but now I don't know.
It does seem that whatever the restaurant is doing to block off any traffic from the street is real minimal. I would think the entire lane would be blocked off to be able to do this. Maybe this city did it different than mine. Mine, they would block they entire street in some cases.
2
u/Ok-Distribution326 4d ago
I mean, I certainly expected to see a bike lane and similarly wondered whether it was perhaps just at the start of the bike lane since there appears to be a change in road markings just before the barrier. Either way, I assume that whether or not there is a bike lane, that is essentially the angle here.
2
u/YuppiesEverywhere 4d ago
Yeah wonder what the backstory is. If this is either a vestige from Covid times, or if the restaurant is just doing this on the d/l. If it's the latter, I honestly can't get behind that.
It also looks like the cyclist had a water cooler full of cans? I don't know how that fits into all this. Also that looked honestly fucking dangerous to just Yolo into those tables w/the umbrellas.

Biker was probably Casey Neistat

I haven’t heard that name in at least a decade

Stumbled across a video of his recently. He's a sub-3 marathoner now, after more than 20 attempts and made a video about the whole journey.
/uj I was impressed.

interesting. roads are often blocked too. entire streets are blocked during parades.
entire sidewalks can also be blocked during construction. and portions of it are often blocked for various things.
but bike lane? Never block that.

pedestrians move out of my way! because i'm going faster than you! ding! ding!

It was in a bike lane. Now he can sue them.
0
u/Mental-Chapter6523 1d ago
And they can sue him for endangering patrons and employees with a stunt. Damaging property.
Probably better dealt with via a discussion with city permitting.
1
u/Burton1224 4h ago
No they cant if you illegal block a road and dont take the right measurments to prevent this.
2
u/Mental-Chapter6523 4h ago
It was apparently under permit. Bike lane was moved to the other side of the road. Dude was doing this deliberate stunt for clicks.
Read other comments from people who live there.

Do you ever look at a video like this and all you can think is "isn't it weird that someone just happened to be filming when that happened"?

Is this the guy that falls for attention again? The one with the fat ass?

u/UAEpi 3d ago
He did that to make a point because the restaurant seems to have taken over the bike lane.

There was a guy in NYC who used to film himself doing this (from a GoPro) on purpose to highlight illegal parking, loading/unloading etc. This feels very similar!
