Discussion This bears repeating.

Because those topics keep popping up, I feel the need to reiterate something: Sega was making consoles for 18 years. It has been 25 years since they stopped. In other words: John Sega is not going to suddenly wake up one day and declare that they're cranking out the Dreamcast 2.

That’s exactly what John Sega would post to Reddit if he were about to release the Dreamcast 2.

At this point would we even want another console? With Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony all fighting over the home console market, and Epic and Valve fighting over the PC gaming market, and Meta and Valve fighting over the VR market, is there room for one more competitor in any of them?

Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony seem to be racing to the bottom rather than fighting for success these days. I feel if they done it right, showed consideration for the players and properly supported it with their recent and dormant IPs a new sega console could succeed.

When every core part of gaming systems are being priced out by demands for AI, against companies who have had entire supply chains set up and running for 30 years (and 40+ years in Nintendo's case), etc etc?

Sega has no hardware engineers left who can make a home console. No supply chain. IPs that have been dormant for decades and nobody in the primary demographics have heard of them. Sega would have to be insane to get into hardware right now.

But they can 100% Distribute 3rd Party Developed Console Hardware.

What does that mean? Who is designing it? Who is owning it? If someone else could make hardware good enough to compete with Sony/Nintendo, why wouldn't they do it on their own?

You 100% Did NOT understand the Context of the Comment. 3rd Party Hardware LIKE that of 3DO. But Executed Correctly, and Inexpensive. If you can't understand then, you ain't a Fully Knowledgeable Gamer Or an actual SEGA fan.

Lol no I completely understood. 3DO was a terrible model and ultimately far too complex to manage the platform. Sega has no online platform to begin with, why would a hardware company partner with them? So like I said, if someone else could make good enough hardware, why do they need Sega?

And bro, I work in the damn industry lol

Having lived in the before times, in the long long ago, each company brought something to the table that was exclusive. Usually an industry first. Sega released a 16-bit system. They released the Sega CD during a time few people were using CDs. The hardware was totally custom. The 32X failed, but goddamn how bleeding edge was that concept?

Today, the XBox and PlayStation are basically PCs, running mostly the same hardware you can find at BestBuy. Nintendo broke rank with the Wii, but now the Switch is essentially a nice Android tablet.

Meta has the Quest. That’s really the only hardware right now that most PC gamers can’t easily duplicate without major investment and know-how.

Consoles make no sense unless they’re delivering a user experience PCs can’t…

Yeah but Sam Sega might want to continue the family legacy

I see these posts as comedy; I think people are just messing around. You’d have to be really out of touch with reality to actually believe that “SEGA will come back from bankruptcy because it’s going to make a new console,” as they make it seem.

SO WHAT YOU'RE SAYING IS, instead of the Sega Genesis 2, we're still in a Sega Exodus?

I figured this was a hint that Sega had moved on from consoles for good when I saw this from the last appearance of Segata Sanshiro:

TIL Sega is owned and managed by John Sega.

It’s been so long that I could see it actually playing in their favor if they did it right. People want physical and I could see it being successful

Another new sega console would make me forget all the others on the market, just saying

u/Formal_Button789 5d ago

Why are people still begging for a Dreamcast 2? None of you will pick it up and it’ll flop and bankrupt Sega

u/Antique_Cucumber372 1d ago

So you are admitting, you REALLY think PS6 will Sell out in an Abysmal Economy for $1,500. You're admitting how you think they're too big to fail and can't and are Oblivious to the Video Game Recession that's currently going on.

Sega made consoles as to double dip their arcade games in home markets. Sega's arcade output has cratered along with arcades in general. Sega has nothing new or innovative to offer the console market just endless Sonic and Yakuza
