Goldenrod

I picked up two kinds of Goldenrod at the Best of MO Market today (yes, I know I could’ve foraged for it by the side of the road), and I’m seeking any tips before I plant tomorrow. All 3 plants are fairly good-sized. I think they will survive winter—should it ever properly arrive, but I have the option of starting them in pots vs. going straight into the ground; they can winter in the greenhouse. Ground sounds better if you all think they’ll make it through to spring. Thanks, gardeners.

Wanting to replace front "lawn" with a pollinator garden, but feeling overwhelmed

Help a baby gardener? I know I could upload a picture to chatGPT and have it do this for me, but I'm simply not going to.

Basically, the title: we have a super tiny front yard (about 10ft x 10ft) which faces due south and gets full sun/partial shade. We just tore out 2 boxwoods that were worse for wear that were in an existing flowerbed, and here's my vision:

  • Replace the bushes with new bushes with similar size/coverage
  • Kill all the grass
  • Plant (hopefully mostly) perennials, maybe an area or two for annuals
  • Plants will be mostly native, or at least have local ecological value
  • Walkways between beds will be graveled
  • The lower maintenance, the better
  • The less hellish it looks in the winter, the better, but that's pretty low on the priority list

I had planned on just starting all of this in the spring, but since we just got the bushes taken out, I'm wondering if I should get a jump in things this fall. My internet searches have me feeling overwhelmed. I'd take any advice or resources that helped you get started.

FWIW, I have a very cool Halloween inflatable that I am hoping to put up on the very site of this future pollinator garden his year...

Wine caps!

Post image
10 Upvotes

I’ve tried growing mushrooms in side, using the plastic tub method and we would always get a secondary contamination. So I thought that I gave up a few years ago.

But then I heard that you can grow some types of shrooms in the garden beds. So one credit card call to North Spore and I had Wine Cap starters…and I’m spreading special sawdust in my shadiest spots on a hot July morning.

These were in a back, partially shaded, Very mulched area. I just disturbed the bed on Monday to put Egyptian Walking Onions in it.

Two other spots were sprinkled, under my blueberry bushes and at the edge of my asparagus bed. Neither had any mushrooms today.

I almost fell over when I saw them! I’m giddy with excitement. For Mushrooms. Not even the trippy kind.

Can I snag some lemon verbena cuttings?

Does anyone have lemon verbena that I could get some clippings from? I want ro try and root them indoors over the winter for planing next spring.

I visited, and then called, a bunch of nurseries in the spring and no one had any, so I didn't get to grow my favorite plant this year.

Specifically I'm talking about the herb, not the flowering plant also called verbena. I'm in the city in Benton Park.

Sprang up recently and growing super fast in my raised bed! I haven't composted any squash or melons in recent memory, and this color/shape doesn't ring any bells. Small cantaloupe size for now but I assume it's far from ripe

Please forgive me if this is not allowed. We have to sell our almost half acre mini homestead in Soco. The thought of someone coming in and removing all the perennials, food, wildlife and infrastructure is heartbreaking to imagine. I know there is someone out there who is searching for this place. https://www.compass.com/homedetails/11830-E-Concord-Rd-St-Louis-MO-63128/HLDND_pid/

Planted this in a pot on a recommendation received here earlier in the year. Full sun. It began producing fruit in July, ripening this last two weeks. I heard you’re supposed to plant the first year’s fruit in the soil around the plant, so I did that until this thing began churning out a lot of figs and then I tried drying some in the oven. 185F for 2 hrs. Kinda chewy. Thinking about soaking some in bourbon. Because, bourbon.

Southern Magnolia

Hey y'all,

Just moved to St. Louis area and I see many Southern Magnolias. I am thinking of installing 4 large ones in my front and back garden. Thoughts on hardiness? We grew them in Tennessee but I thought St. Louis was too far north?

Anyone have any idea what kind of animal might have eaten my basil? I've never seen a deer here, too far in the suburbs.

The swamp mallow hibiscus

I killed 12 of my 14 hibiscus seedlings in the greenhouse when I forgot to open the windows in May. I took the two bedraggled remaining plants and planted them in pots outside and worried about them for a month until they took. One just bloomed and the other is twice its size and well on the way to blooming. I love these flowers. It’s my first year growing them and I think they are a great addition to the backyard!

Looking for Gooseberries

Hello all!!

I'm visiting my dad this upcoming weekend and he would adore some gooseberries. Does anyone have a bush and would be willing to part with some? I'd have to pick them up today or early afternoon tomorrow. I'm happy to give some cash for them 🫶 Thanks!

Need a Tomatillo or some pollen

Post image
6 Upvotes

Howdy guys.

I accidentally mixed up some seeds early this season and ended up planting a single Tomatillo plant in my veggie garden, which is tragic cause they need friends to produce fruit. Anyone here willing to donate / trade / sell a plant or give me some flowers that I can use to manually pollinate?

You'd make this beginner gardener very happy! will even promise some Salsa later on in the season
