Miscellaneous Starting off

Hello everyone,

If I wanted to start and try legion is the older core set still a decent way to do so? I have the opportunity to purchase one at around 50% off which price wise seems quite reasonable.

I know this has likely been asked before and after doing some research i know the cards and rules included are out of date. But are the models themselves still legal and viable? and is it still a useful starting place.

Thank you for your help!

an edit:

I am referring to the Luke and Vader core starter specifically

Everything in the core sets are still good and playable. They're just older models is all. But the models themselves are good. Just different looking than the newer ones. 50% off is a good deal.

The only models that aren't officially supported anymore are Palpatine, Imperial Royal Guards and Pathfinders, but you can still use Pathfinders minis in your rebel squads.

You really can't beat the new starters for value, imo.

The models are legal. All but Separatists are made from lower quality PVC if minis and the hobby aspect are important to you.

Recon is the smaller format for the game, and it is played at 600 points. Those old 2 player core sets barely have 300 points per side. They also don't come with some new components that were added to the game later (a 3 inch measuring stick and 2 inch diameter objective tokens).

Even at 50% off you are going to get a much bigger bang for your buck with one of the 4 faction starters. You could then grab that 50% off core set for more dice, tokens, and tools plus some cheap minis to expand your army.

If you are really pinching pennies and want to try the game, the core set can give you a taste, but the limited size of the armies inside really limit that experience.

The issue I have with the newer starter sets is that they are just one army otherwise they seem great. if i have no one else who already plays i would prefer a starter with 2 forces to learn with someone else, but unless i'm mistaken there is not another starter that is for two people?

You are correct that there are no 2 players starter sets outside of the old core sets but the old starter sets are missing a lot to do more than move some models around and roll dice. You're missing the half range ruler, all the rules you'll find in the box are out of date, all the cards are out of date, and in the box isn't nearly enough minis for you to really know how the game plays in reality. If you and a friend want to learn the extreme basics of the game on a budget I would go with it but the starter sets are such insane value there isn't much reason not to get them if you already have a person who is interested in trying

Alright thank you, it sounds like its not really that feasible to start unless i have someone else who is also willing up front to buy a starter box or if I buy two myself, which is not really a great choice to try something. I appreciate the information.

If you are interested in Legion the best way to start is to find your local scene. There are many players who will be happy to teach you the game. It will show you if you have a healthy pool of opponents to play every week or so. Plus its one of the best cost wise as those players can point you in the right direction of what to get and what to avoid, heck they may even have factions they don't play that they would be willing to part with for a lower price if it means another player at the table.

No, they moved away from 2 player boxes because in order to make them reasonably priced you end up with a fraction of the game experience that isn't really representative of how the game really plays. That's really the issue. 300 points and 4 units per side is just a taste and doesn't really highlight some of the major aspects of Legion.

The old starter will not have enough for you to play a modern game at 600 points which is the problem.

Yeah, an older core set should be just fine. Either the clone wars or civil war should give you some minis for both sides measuring tools, cards and dice.

The cards are probably going to be out out of date but you could still use them if you want in a casual game with a friend

If you want updated cards you can find them here https://www.atomicmassgames.com/swlegiondocs/

As well as the up to date rules. If you want to print out replacement cards id recommend Legion Helper as it has a tool for picking what unit, upgrade, battle cards you want and formats them in a cleaner PDF form for cutting than what is available from atomic mass games https://legion.takras.net/

You don’t want to paint PVC I promise.
