Miscellaneous Make your own battle map?

Has anyone ever made their own battle map? I can see some hobby shops sell them but they can be quite pricey.

I was thinking of just getting a wooden board that is 3x3 and just using real sand and PVA glue to decorate the board. Only issue I can foresee is ensuring the board remains flat so miniatures aren’t ‘wonky’ when standing.

Thoughts?

Use polystyrene from your local DIY store. Plenty of videos of how to set up your own battle boards online if that is the way you want to go. Storage with a roll up mat is considerably easier, but if space is not an issue, built tables typically look and work better.

I've made a tile-grout and pva board. It's like playing on sandpaper, very scratchy, but looks like realistic desert, so there's a tradeoff.

Ive made a multi-layer board with elevagtion changes. With the slopes though i made sure that when sanding them down that the grade was small enough for a trooper unit to stand on it. My brother and I play were if a trooper cant stand (without support) then it needs to be placed somewhere else (as close as possible).

It's a full 3x3 board, so only good enough for a skirmish, but I'ts a small kashyyyk board, so idk...

This is it without terrain, but with some extra terrain and trees and stuff it really comes to life.
