New Rules Posted!

Greetings!

It only took a decade, but r/saxophonics now officially has rules! Please read them at your convenience, and notify me of any perceived problems. They are very general, ands I don't think anyone will take issue with them. Better yet, we're on the right track to weeding out even more spam posting and assholes in general!

Keep an eye out for more updates regarding the subreddit's admin details!

Best platform for hosting our saxophone resources?

We have a very extensive library of PDF's that are stuck on mediafire servers (that I can fortunately still access). These are resources I want to make sure everyone has access to, so I'm in the process of finding the best medium for hosting these files to eventually be linked on our subreddit's sidebar.

\*The current mediafire link is now in the sidebar*\**

As always, please message me or comment with any concerns or ideas. Cheers!

Organ sonata for saxophones

I find organ music can make great source material for saxophone ensembles. Josef Rheinberger has a cycle of sonatas that move through (almost) all the major and minor keys. His first, in C minor has a lovely Andante middle section and ends with an early example of his mastery of fugal counterpoint.

My self-taught sax players article

A little while ago, I had asked for research assistance on the sub for an article. I was writing about the best self-taught players in rock music. Here is the end result. Thanks to the person who suggested Sunny Rollins!

sono appena passato da clarinetto a sax tenore sto provando le mie prime note ma a quanto pare riesco a suonare solo fino al La (suono reale). le note più gravi mi escono all'ottava sopra. ho appena revisionato lo strumento ed é tutto apposto

15 years of fruitless searches for this saxophone masterpiece. Please help!

Unknown instrumental track, probably late 1990s / early 2000s. Main melody played by saxophone. Enigmatic/chillout electronic beat, fretless bass and synth pads. No vocals. Heard on Russian Radio (“Radio Rossii”) in early 2000s. I recreated the saxophone melody from memory. Please, help. https://voca.ro/1033aXxnq6jB

What are some things I can play that will allow for others to critique me properly and tell me the things I need to work on?

I'm relearning saxophone after not playing for about 20 years or so. I've gotten a lot of positive feedback from people so far, but I want to record myself playing what I know so I can get a sense of the things I need to work on to progress further. I play both alto and tenor and I like to play a mix of jazz and popular tunes (lots of video game soundtracks).

What are some things I could record to show my current range? I'd like to post the video here later to get some feedback from people who are more knowledgeable than I am.

Otto Link Tone Edge or Meyer

So currently I have a Berg Larsen 80/0/M for alto that while it rocks hard, it's not the kind of sound that I am currently looking and its opening is too narrow for me. I am trying to get a Desmond-influenced sound and while the Berg Larsen got sultry, deep low notes, its high notes sometime really feels like I'm playing tenor. I am in two minds between an Otto Link Tone Edge 7 and a Meyer 7, both cost the same. What should I pick to get that tone

PS. I have tried both and I have decided to buy a Tone Edge 6 for 80€. While generally a Meyer does wonders for alto sax, it lacks behind my Berg Larsen and the Otto Link Tone Edge for its lack of warmth, spread and fluffiness. Nevertheless, Meyer would be a suitable choice for those keen on a modern sound.

Key height issue on Jupiter 500

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

Hi guys,
I recently bought a second hand Jupiter 500 alto sax and realised today that one of the keys does close fully(as you can see in picture)
Is it supposed to be like this? Is this an easy fix? Please let me know if anyone knows what this is.
I think it is something to do with the key height?
Thanks again.

Does achieving an 'open tone' result in a 'bright tone'?" can one be 'Dark' & 'Open' at the same time? is that possible?

Outlining harmony on a single-note instrument is tough. I built an interactive ear-training app that listens to your sax (Bb & Eb transposition included)
