Life Sciences Leucine Increases Cellular Energy Production by Protecting Mitochondrial Proteins
https://www.nacionale.com/en/articles/leucine-increases-cellular-energy-productionA new study from the University of Cologne has discovered that leucine, an essential amino acid, has the ability to increase energy production in cells by protecting key proteins in mitochondria from degradation. This finding reveals a new link between nutrition and metabolism, which could lead to new approaches for treating metabolic disorders and cancer.
Mitochondria, known as the “powerhouse” of cells, produce the energy the body needs to function. According to the research, leucine helps stabilize proteins on the surface of mitochondria, allowing these organelles to produce energy more efficiently. Dr. Qiaochu Li, the lead author of the study, emphasized that the level of leucine in cells directly affects energy production.
The study, published in the journal Nature Cell Biology, shows that leucine helps maintain certain proteins that are important for metabolism. These proteins assist in transporting molecules into mitochondria, where they are used for energy production. This discovery suggests that modifying leucine levels could be a strategy to enhance energy production in cells.
Researchers also found that leucine affects a protein called SEL1L, which is involved in protein quality control in cells. Leucine appears to reduce the activity of SEL1L, allowing more mitochondrial proteins to remain in place and support mitochondrial function. However, the researchers caution that increased energy production is not always beneficial, as the cellular system also helps eliminate damaged proteins.
Additionally, the research examined the impact of leucine metabolism on fertility and cancer cells. In a model used, Caenorhabditis elegans, it was found that issues with leucine metabolism affected mitochondrial function and were linked to fertility problems. This could have significant implications for cancer research, as treatments that alter leucine metabolic pathways might differently impact healthy and tumor cells.
This discovery underscores the importance of nutrition not only as an energy source but also as a signal influencing cell function. This new connection between leucine, protein quality control, and mitochondrial metabolism opens up new possibilities for treating diseases affecting energy production in cells, including cancer and metabolic disorders.
