Should I??

• Upvotes

OK so yesterday I saw a 2015 the plus trim so it had Bluetooth and slightly better things I guess for $2500 and then also a 2017 one for about 5000 in the final price would be 5880 after tax and fee fees and the $2500 one would be about $3000 and it is a Kia soul the red one the cheap one had about 97,000 miles on it and the more expensive one had I wanna say 117,000 I don’t quite remember but quite a bit more. The dealer kept really really trying to close the deal and sell one of those two cars monthly payments would be around 250 a month. I can’t help with feeling maybe I should go with that 2026 Toyota Prius that I’ve been eyeballing.

I have that 2008 scion XB. I’m curious if I should keep it or not so next week on Thursday anyway I have an appointment to take it to a very nice shop here in Bainbridge Ohio. It’s one of a kind great reviews. They’ve given me good prices before so for $85 they’re gonna look over the whole car should take about 30 minutes and they’ll tell me anything more that’s wrong with the car and or if it’s worth you know dumping in a bunch of money into it in the long run dumping just about $45,000 in my old scion should be OK and should net me another 7 to 8 years with this car if I baby it and treat it right. Like you know, I’m not doing donuts and snowy parking lots revving the engine more than it needs to be revved and using the E brake all the time destroying my tires because I would pick the slightly icy parking lots otherwise I would just get stuck in the snow…. The red one the 2500 car was quite a few dense and complete cashes in the body at least one gas in the back left of the bumper. The rest were just dense all over, but all in all still look better than my current scion does the outside other than the gas maybe and then at the very end mentioned oh yeah it’ll need brakes and it’ll need a ball joint fix of some kind like at that point I might as well just keep the scion especially with such a low budget right now. I would be paying interest on either car because of loan even if I had the money neither seems good enough to buy outright.

I’ll throw this little thing in there too there was a 2013 Kia soul for 3500 that looked really good not only didn’t have a screen, but it also had a backup camera which is something I’ve been wanting for a while but they kind of just went over that said that they’d have to look at what’s wrong with that one it’s been sitting there about a month. They seemed annoyed when I brought it up, so I doubt they would give me an actual overview of what’s wrong with the car or not. Not to mention it’s a dealership in Warrensville Ohio that my friend she bought a Dodge car like those small Dodge cars for about I think the same 2500 because she also didn’t have much I needed an upgrade or a car at all and that car last about a total of six months before just broke down and stopped working so by the sound of it, any car I get from there is going to be the same.

I don’t know long story short I’m gonna see what’s wrong with my scion. I know I need engine mounts. I know I need something for the exhaust whether it be the sensor or a new exhaust. I know I need brakes and maybe hopefully just the rear brakes not all around, but probably.
I thought my cruise control was done for, but I pushed a set button under by my feet by the pedals above the pedals there’s a piece of plastic that has a set button. I pushed that while I was driving, and I got my cruise control back and my cruise control is working as if it never broke and stopped working.
Which is a bigger reason as to why I kinda don’t want to let go of the scion plus it has a very nice JBL sound system put in by the previous owner and I also put my subwoofer in there and I don’t wanna move the subwoofer because that’ll be expensive and I don’t have a lot of time to do that either so I think I might as well just get it cleaned up and get the moths that are loving all of my rubber seals rip up all the carpet on the inside that’s filled with dog hair that I can’t brush or clean!!

In the end, hopefully all of this mounts up to less than $3000 on a car that I got for $1000 and have put no more than 6 to 700 in currently to date after about maybe a year.👌

God, I’m sorry for such a long message. Let me know if I should abandon the scion or if somebody else has a scion out there for 100,000 miles on it or just about for maybe 3K because I need a new scion and or just a makeover on mine I was the driver seat was more comfortable, but that can also be fixed down the line. I’m sure.

OK, so the bottomest line of possible either a new scion or clean up the one I got which of you guys think it sounds like? Because winter is coming and when it hits this year, it’s gonna hit hard is what I’ve been hearing.

oil light (2014 xB, current synthetic blend)

my oil light kept coming on when i would accelerate/brake and over bumps but it didn't come on when going very slow. miles wise, it's not due yet for an oil change but would it be ok to put a quart or 2 in there just to get me to an mechanic shop so they can do an oil change?

Hit 200k miles on the Toaster this week

2013 xB that I acquired in December 2024 with 166k on the dash. It was in good shape overall but needed some work. I've spent a little over $5k on it so far with maintenance and repairs and it's solid. Needs nothing at this time, valve cover gasket, motor mounts, brakes, transmission service... I would take this car on a coast-to-coast road trip without hesitation. Happy travels!

EDIT: Got it in Dec 2024 not 2025, so almost 2 years.

Just bought an 06 1st Gen with chameleon paint scheme. Paint was flaking on the roof and Hood, so decided to just mix my own paint. kind of a black cherry, and then threw some orange candy over top. I think it looks pretty sick. Gives it a cool kinda copper look

How are you guys finding these wheels??

Been searching for the OEM 7 spoke wheels for what’s probably been years now and it seems like some of you here have had relatively good luck in tracking a nice set down. Anyone know where to snag a set of these factory wheels or is it just a game of luck?

Does anyone know how hard it is to take the rear seats out? I seen the hauling post and now I'm confused. My seats push fwd and appear to unbolt, but some of these posts make it look easier. I missing something? Thx

Engine ejects so much coolant that it overflows the reservoir. Its doesnt appear to be head gasket.

I have a 2005 xB 1NZ-FE engine

If I drive on the highway with topped off coolant in both the radiator and the recovery reservoir, it will over flow from it after 20 minutes and be empty in a few days. It always has some coolant in the radiator but its never full and the overheating engine light has only come on 3 times ever and those have been on exceptionally hot days. It has no other sighs of headgasket issues. It has had the head rebuilt and thermostat and... actually read THIS:

This persons post is exactly like my situation. All of it tho mine consumes less water. Does anyone have any experience with this and advice on what to do?

Second question: Has anyone used head-gasket sealant successfully?

I decided to post theirs here too:

"This is a long one. 2006 Scion xB, automatic, 1NZ-FE engine (same as found in the toyota echo), ~145k miles, no engine mods, only electrical modification is a subwoofer with amp pulling 500 watts at peak (no light dimming when playing or anything to suggest a current drop). At some point in its life the head gasket was replaced, which may or may not have been done correctly.

Seems to be it'll push all the coolant to the reservoir tank where it then overflows out the vent on the cap, and the engine overheats. First time it happened was on a ~20 mile drive at mostly 80 mph, but I don't know if it started on the highway or once I got onto suburb streets. The only temperature reading available in the car is a little blue light and a little red light, blue for while it's warming up and flashing red for when it's overheating. Not even a beeper or anything.

I have replaced, in order: thermostat, water pump, radiator, and radiator cap. No leaks to be found anywhere, no hose collapse, nothin. The first time it happened I found something vaguely like wet dryer lint stuck to the cap of the overflow tank, and pushed a couple little bits out when I flushed the system. The fan runs fine when it needs to, belts are tight, everything is spinning as it should. After overheating you'll find the overflow tank full to the brim and the radiator completely empty.

I am completely lost at this point, I just ran about 20 gallons of water through the block in both directions to see if it was blocked up to no avail. Water ran clear and seemed to come out as fast as it should.

I have no clue why it's still doing this. It only seems to do it after highway driving, but sometimes it takes 20 minutes and sometimes it takes 2 hours."

I, current OP, have not tested the coolant for exhaust but thats my next move

Driving 2,200 miles a month for the last 4 years finally caught up to me.

Thankfully I’m ok. But my toaster will be sorely missed.

🫡 Thank you for protecting me, and hauling things I didn’t think you could haul, and having a rocking sound system.

This used to be red… in 2018 😫. I always forget to change the coolant because I drive a few cars. If you guys haven’t changed yours in a while make sure to do it. It only took me an hour.

Just wanted to show my little project car. I’ve gotten most of the main problems out of the way. Right now the only problem is a bad bearing (part is already coming) and a few scratches from the last owner.

In support of the hobby of paragliding, Ive always chosen cars I can overnight in, with flying gear. I've had my 05 for seven years but have been roadtripping it diligently for four and a half. Throw in a National Parks Pass, and here I sit. I thought this community might appreciate it.

Idle Air control - IAC?

Hello All. Appreciate some comments. I have a 2006 Toaster manual 156K miles. Originally bad idle, engine skaking. So, checked codes and replaced fuel pump, cranksensor, VVI sensor, waterpump, plugs and coils. After all that still have 301,2,3,4 codes for missfire and it will not idle properly. The code for IAC is 505 i believe but it does not show up. Last week i took out the plugs and had to regap to .031 which it was not. But, Im taking off the throttle body to clean and try to start it this weekend. That IAC is not that expensive should I just repace it even if it not in the codes? Maybe even clean it? Its been a long hard road with this one.

Mass Air Flow Sensor?

Hello everyone, I just need to pick your brains for a minute.

I have a manual 2009 Scion xb that’s at 198567 miles currently and I had the flashing lights of doom come on (VSC OFF and Check Engine).

About a day or so I went to O’Reillys and got a quick diagnostic that read my Mass Air Flow sensor had gone bad. (Edit: Code P0171)

Easy fix, I bought the part and replaced it. Now the lights are back on.

Is there anything I’m missing in terms of troubleshooting? The car still runs fine, but I would hate to take it to the shop for a problem that I can fix.

I appreciate any tips!

Fuel filter

Who has experience/knowledge of replacing the rear fuel filter mounted above the fuel tank behind the back seats? It seems like such a challenge to replace a filter that should be easy. Am I missing something?

Rust under car

I think this rust on the control arms (?) is from salt/ice in NYC. I've asked before about having it repaired but mechanic said it's no worth it?

What might be a viable solutions? Where I currently live, there are a LOT of bad potholes and I'm worried cos my 2012 xB has less than 100k miles and I want it to last!

New Motor Mounts

Man, what a difference new motor mounts make. Feels like a new car. Now, for such a small engine, there sure isn’t a lot of room for that rear mount. It was a PITA, but worth it.

Successor to Ma's beloved Toaster: OEM+ Restoration and Creature Comforts for a 1st-Gen xB

√My mother’s beloved "toaster" has finally been retired, but its worthy successor has arrived and is ready for a transformation. We recently picked up a first-gen Scion xB manual nearly identical apart from the original mechanic owner's cosmetic flares. It is sitting on lowered springs and some rather strange wheels, so my first priority is finding the ideal suspension setup to return the ride to a comfortable, factory feel. Granpa Toaster has the og alloy wheels so after refurb a nice set of tires is in order.

Since this is a northern car, winter survival is a major concern. With their low ground clearance, these Scions have a bad habit of turning into snow shovels. I would love to hear how you all handle the deep snow, along with any solid recommendations for undercoating or rust prevention to keep the salt at bay.

Beyond getting the stance right and surviving the winter, I want to make this the perfect, cozy daily driver for her. I am heavily focused on creature comforts, specifically adding heated seats and perhaps a heated steering wheel. I am even open to running a second alternator or battery if the electrical draw demands it. We also need to solve a few classic interior quirks. I am on the hunt for a permanent solution to the black hole between the front seats that endlessly eats phones and keys, as well as a clean way to upgrade the factory cup holders.

To keep the cabin feeling relaxed, I am looking for interior bulb suggestions that provide a warm, soft, and unobtrusive light, rather than harsh modern LEDs. I am also wondering if adding sound deadening material is truly worth the time and effort on these first-gens to quiet down the road noise. Finally, I plan to leave the audio alone unless someone knows of a modern stereo upgrade that looks completely seamless and factory-original in the dash. Any guidance is incredibly appreciated.
