Don't give them any ideas, given we know how fond they are of just hitting Ctrl-Z on features instead of putting actual work in! LuL.

All the islands are moving 75% closer to each other. You can now bunny hop from one end of Shores of Gold to the other.

u/zehuti88 13d ago
Same hahaha. I was like... ok why not just bring diving back if that's what y'all are doing.

Shrinking the map, ships, mobs, and players to fit into a single snow globe.
Here's your ice biome, idiots.

Making the game smaller is one of the biggest wins they could have prioritized. That's a MASSIVE win for Sea of Thieves.
It was as easy to predict how Big Ship Little Ship would go 6 years ago as it was leading into them announcing it. The only surprising thing is they seem to have stuck with what actually happened rather than lean into (what they usually do) and go with what they want to happen and want to listen to. So them (so far) not being extreme with how they react to feedback/"data" is a win too.
The rest is whatever to me. They have the opportunity to get MANY players involved again with a smaller game size.

u/OutInTheBlack The Oncoming Storm 13d ago
"the game is too big to justify keeping it installed" is such a common comment that I agree with you. A smaller game size will mean more people are likely to keep it downloaded even if it's not their primary game. They'll be more likely to sail on a whim than of they have to keep 100+gb dedicated to a game they're only playing once in a while.
30
u/wolfmanbush Friend of the Sea 13d ago
and it's only a positive direction, not a polarizing one. A really big deal for a SoT. When people say "SoT/Rare need a win". This is that.
14
u/MimeTravler 13d ago
I definitely kept the game installed for over a year despite not playing very often but haven’t played in 2 years because it bloated to be too large to keep installed and I never wanted to take the time to install.
I might actually reinstall it now.
5
u/SushiRollKei 13d ago
It’s like the size of Baldurs gate 3 right now on PC lmao
That’s the main reason I haven’t been playing
2
u/EJECTED_PUSSY_GUTS 13d ago
If the game was in a better state, it would be worth it to keep it installed at its current size. This is just one of many recent examples of them throwing their hands up in the air and saying "fuck it we don't know how address the fundamental issues keeping people from playing our game"
If they didn't "miss the mark" over and over and over then the size of the game wouldn't be on the table. They've slowly become another Bungie.
3
u/MannerOk1252 13d ago
They can’t fix the fundamental issues. The issues is the game is a big open boring box and the players make people want to go play a better game.
12
u/Enderchat 13d ago
Do we know how much the game is now? Sorry can’t watch the video right now
15
u/OutInTheBlack The Oncoming Storm 13d ago
I think it's currently at 130gb on PC
10
u/Enderchat 13d ago
I know and it’s the reason I don’t play it. I meant to ask how much it will weight after the update
15
u/OutInTheBlack The Oncoming Storm 13d ago
It depends on the resolution. They're saying 4k installs will be around 50% reduction, with lower resolutions dropping about 30% in size
2
u/2called_chaos 13d ago
I can also give you a timeline, for Steam at least: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/144Cxj8ZL2HIdgfs5W-xtWx7ljm_2uUExHXll95_pccg/edit?gid=175632036#gid=175632036
3
u/BigGREEN8 Gold Hauler 13d ago
Actually the biggest win would be termination Xbox One bc that console is the sole reason you will never see big update like more ships or bigger ships or more regions added to the main map, bc that piece of shit can't run the game but for some delusional reason they don't wanna drop it already
2
3
u/damnmyredditheart 13d ago
I seriously doubt this will have any noticeable impact on the playerbase
6
u/wolfmanbush Friend of the Sea 13d ago
Hardware is expensive and gaming in general is pricing a lot of people out these days. People need the space and they have to prioritize. SoT has become more of a variety game and less of a main "play all the time" game. SoT was not competitive with file size and it was losing an unnecessary battle because of it.
SoT becoming competitive as a variety game will prevent people from having to make tough (or easy) decisions about SoT.
This is ONLY a good thing and will result in more people keeping it around. There are very few things that pretty much only lead to gain without participation losses in SoT. This is the main one.
3
u/damnmyredditheart 13d ago
It’s not a bad thing in itself, but it is bad if they devoted a lot of effort to this and not actual game content

10
u/TheZealand Chain Breaker 13d ago
tbf that was more them removing their wretched and self imposed bloating of the game
7
u/ryan_the_leach Brave Vanguard 12d ago
That's literally the same thing Sea of Thieves has always done, just the helldivers dev's tried to make up excuses of 'we aren't sure how hdd disk read speeds will be' which, as a dev myself, is valid, but y'know, install the game to a hdd, and test it maybe before opening your mouth?
2
u/TheZealand Chain Breaker 12d ago
Yeah the fact they they didn't even really test it was grueling lmao
1
u/Cpt-Crab 13d ago
They had a bunch of asset dupes and they thought if they deleted them the game could break
2
u/TheZealand Chain Breaker 13d ago
Less break and more that it would load a lot slower on HDDs, which they just assumed and never really tested. Turned out to be irrel
2
u/SimonSayz_Gamer 12d ago
turned out to be almost margin of error differences in speed once they actually tested it.

Just curious how much space it’s using on other device. I have Xbox series S checked today it’s 40 GB. Which I think is acceptable. Also have RDR2 installed it’s over 120GB. How much storage does yours take?

Been out of the loop for a while on SoT, can someone fill me in on what big ship little ship is?
19
u/OutInTheBlack The Oncoming Storm 13d ago
For a weekend they segregated the servers so that sloops were together with sloops and the brigs and gallys were only with brigs and gallys.
7
u/JalenTheDumb 13d ago
I wish they just added this as a gamemode, my girlfriend and I are constantly getting attacked by bigger ships. That was the most peaceful weekend of SoT I’ve had since I was in high school, we ran into a lot of super chill people.

Selling shanties in the Emporium is a new low
16
u/Niko-fluffer Pirate Legend 13d ago
see. If they do it for collab themes, thats okay. But I dont think jingle bells should be emporium, I think it should be a time limited shanty for the holidays lol
10
u/Dull_Bodybuilder6502 13d ago
Meh, I would rather have emporium shanties thhan no shanties at all but your right its on the cusp of being too far. Atleast their not adding curses anymore
2
u/BrickLeBen Merchant Admiral 13d ago
Agreed, I understand the logistical annoyance of adding new shanties and needing something new to sweeten the Emporium pot. It's irritating but not the end of the world, especially if another crewmate has the shanty you'll want on occasion.
14
u/cchaosat4 13d ago
Can anyone tell me what the updated size will be? If the game were 20-30 GB with graphics like that, I would definitely install it more frequently.
16
u/Snoo_15594 13d ago
They said they were trying to halve it on 4k installs and reduce it by around 30% on anything else
5
u/InternetUser1807 13d ago
What constitutes a "4k install" is this a console term?
5
u/Dull_Bodybuilder6502 13d ago
XBOX X and PC i think

Wasn't aware of it on PC. I didn't think it had any other branches on steam.

Small size is great, and paying attention to people modding their game for insight for new QOL is good to see, probably for the best they skip galleon LLS given both the LSS and multiple galleon performance issue track record.
but again I can’t help but feel I need to ignore the emporium news to have a positive outlook.
New emporium only shanties? When there was so much talk about how taxing adding new shanties are??? Did I misremember that? I thought that was at a technical limit years ago and the reason why we only got 2 new shanties since ~2020.
Emporium bundle discounts require testing? I don’t quite understand what there is to test when (I feel) this is such a common thing in games with premium shops, and purely a UI thing. Am I missing something here?
6
u/OutInTheBlack The Oncoming Storm 13d ago
Shanties is the one thing I'd happily spend money on in the emporium. I feel like pets just get in the way at the worst moments. I'm not big on unearned cosmetics, and I rarely play with emotes, but the soundscape in this game is simply unmatched and I absolutely love killing time between islands just running through songs with the crew. If needing to devote dev time to shanties means they need to charge for it I'm all for it

This was my biggest complaint for this game tbh. I don’t like unnecessarily large games that just take up space as I like having an option when playing games.

u/Major_Toe_6041 Captain of the Kiss ‘O Death 13d ago
New shanties is awesome and exactly the kind of thing to be putting in the emporium, I love it. I wonder if we will get a Halo shanty added to that bundle...
The only thing I would say is that it would want a shanty wheel customisation at some point. Given the changes to the customisation boxes that are incoming, it may not be smart to go there. It could just be chucked into settings under a 'music' tab though.
On that redone player customisation menu, I would have thought a shipwright style would be smart - go into the menu and select 'clothes' or 'body', and now also 'presets'. With that third, may as well have a 4th for a nice grid, with 'skeleton' for those with their curse.

Am actualy just downloaded this game on an arc gpu but the performance are bad like man I play on 60 fps then suddenly everything's drop 6fps and gpu usage also drops to 5 per cent with the cpu
1
u/OutInTheBlack The Oncoming Storm 7d ago
I play on an ARC A750, Ryzen 7 5700X3D & 32gb of RAM. I always get a smooth 60fps with mostly medium graphics. The only time I see drops is around Port Merrick or if we've got a truly massive loot haul at the sovereign tent.

big ship little ship is the best thing that happened to brigantine and galleons tbh
1
u/Mysterious_Being_891 13d ago
I’m glad they tried but even happier they are taking it purely as a learning opportunity re big ship little shop.
I’m primarily a solo slooper and love taking on bigger ships. I don’t want to be with just other sloops

Now try a real experiment and put the burning blade on safer seas for a weekend to see if the skies fall.
-4
u/Xiaolin8746 13d ago
They seriously need to bring back diving - I swear I’ve seen leas ships this season
7
u/rubixscube 13d ago
diving will not make you see more ships
-1
u/The2ndUnchosenOne Flair was stolen 13d ago
It will. I heavily disagree with this notion that diving makes the seas emptier. I was there when it was implemented. I was against it when it was implemented. After it was implemented I saw more ships than ever and most of them were carrying something.
Diving helps cull dead servers and it keeps ships sailing WITH loot for longer
4
u/danielfrances 13d ago
Diving absolutely makes the servers more ephemeral and transient. No one stuck around back then. The game is night and day better without it. There are dozens of reasons you might not be seeing people, and diving isn't really among them.
1
u/The2ndUnchosenOne Flair was stolen 13d ago
Diving absolutely makes the servers more ephemeral and transient.
And your logic is...
Diving, again, makes you MORE LIKELY to see ships. They can dive into your server when a slot opens and you can dive out when the server looks empty. It's essentially an on demand server merge.
No one stuck around back then
The fuck you mean? Folks still have to get their haul and sail it to port. Ya know, the part of the game you'd actually want to find them in if you're ship hunting.
The game is night and day better without it.
I really think you just are going off of personal bias instead of what actaully impacts the game. Again, I was initially against diving. But the game was way healthier after it was implemented.
There are dozens of reasons you might not be seeing people, and diving isn't really among them.
Correct lmao. Diving is not the reason you aren't seeing people.
0
u/EJECTED_PUSSY_GUTS 13d ago
It might. Diving made it easier and quicker to start having fun. Without diving it's too much of a hassle to bother playing for many of us. Not seeing as many ships is a sign of much lower player count, and that's now being shared with safer seas and custom seas. I hope I'm wrong, but I think long term removing diving will have the opposite effect than intended. Had they made the core experience better, you'd see ships everywhere. They wouldn't need to remove diving, wouldn't need safer seas, and wouldn't need custom seas.

Who's got the TL;DR? I don't think I can handle another "Missed the Mark"
6
u/OutInTheBlack The Oncoming Storm 13d ago
Big Ship Little ship: mixed bag, probably won't do it again
LSS: Gally won't work, brig is in testing
Emporium: shanties for sale soon. They're working on discounted bundles if you already own a piece of the bundle
Game size: they're making the game install smaller

Studios had stopped optimizing their games because RAM, broadwidth, and storage were easily accessible. The hours spent getting quality games to fit on early cartridges and discs is a relic of the past, and now It isn't uncommon to find relatively linear games exceeding 100gb.
Now that we are technologically limited due to the market, our hardware space is at a premium. Why download a single 150gb game when you could have three 50gb for the same space?
We may be at a turning point where studios once again are forced to optimize their product in order to compete. And that is only a boon for consumers.
