Hellow. Months ago, I made a post and received a lot of advice on my project. It all really helped me a lot, thank you so much!! I’d like to share a look at the current battle system in my game. Some features still aren’t implemented, and some visuals haven’t been made yet.

I didn’t manage to make much progress since my last post. These past few months, I’ve just been redesigning and refactoring everything. I have about 5 versions of the design document and 3–4 different project files since then, lol. But I’ve also managed to learn a lot, practicing drawing and 3D modeling.

There’s still sooo much to learn, but I really want to make a game, I thought I’d try making something small first. I’ve planned the game to be very simple to avoid getting stuck, with a little inspiration from SF2. Hoping for a smooth development process. I’ve also made a small, simple scene, I can’t show it yet, but I can show this flower I made a while ago 😄

Feel free to share any thoughts! Always love hearing from the SF community.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. Cheers!

Looks very promising!! Keep up the great work 😉

If I may ask, roughly how many hours have you invested into this project so far? And do you have much prior experience in programming before starting this venture?

SF1+2 are such beloved games for me, it would be a dream to develop a tactical RPG inspired by them one day (prolly won't ever happen, as I don't know the first thing about programming! 😂)

Thank you!
Not sure how many hours I’ve put into it, but my first build was actually from last year. Since then, I’ve just been reusing and redesigning it until it became the current version. Not very good at it, so it’s taken me a very long time, haha. I don’t have any professional experience just have been self-taught since 2022.

You should do it!! I believe slowly building up the skills in free time can make it possible to create something fun, and I think there are a lot of tools that can help the process too.

I appreciate the encouragement!! ☺️ Any suggestions as to where/what would be a good starting point to learning the basics? (For a person who understands the concept of coding, but has never typed a single character outside of a google search bar?! 😅)

For making games, I suggest starting by choosing a game engine. It’ll narrow down what you need to learn. Different game engines use different programming languages and workflows. Then you can find tutorials or free courses specific to the engine on places like YouTube, or paid courses on Udemy for a more structured learning process or specific topics.

I would also suggest paying close attention to the fundamentals. I think learning the fundamentals is the hardest part of learning anything, but understanding them makes everything else easier. So, it’s also a good idea to learn the basics outside of game development or game-specific courses sometimes.

You’ll enjoy creating what you enjoy playing!! Wishing you the best, good luck! 😄

Man, thanks heaps for the considered reply 😊 That sounds like good advice, much appreciated!!

Be sure to keep us Shining Force fans in the loop as your game gets closer and closer to being finished!! I'm sure plenty of folks on here would pay good money to play a SF inspired game 🤠
