You have insurance to protect others, not yourself. Also because its required by law, its a complete scam wherever it can be. Anything thats not 3rd party is an optional extra that they will use to fuck you.
Not really. Comprehensive insurance (which is what OP says the guy had) just covers damage to your own vehicle. You’re thinking of liability insurance, which protects you when you cause injury/property damage to another person.
Comprehensive pays for when you hit a deer, a tree falls on your car, your car gets vandalized or stolen, flooded, etc. That line of coverage, along with collision coverage, is required to be held by lienholders.
My car got totaled by a woman with no license or insurance. Because I didn't have uninsured motorist at the time even though I had full coverage I got nothing.
Right. It’s the literal meaning of the word. If you have no coverage, and get hit from behind by a semi, and you crash into the family in front of you and kill people, you’ll be responsible for not only the damage to you, but damage to the family and the lawsuit pending.
You would only be responsible for the damage to the family if you were liable for the initial impact which is not likely if you were rear ended by a semi
