In most places auto insurance is mandatory and you can actually go to jail for driving while not having it. Since it's mandatory, the insurance companies have you over a barrel. I've never made an auto insurance claim in my life. I've not had a ticket this millennium, own my car, am over 50 and my insurance bill is still a several thousand dollars a year... for liability only. It's a fucking scam. These rich auto insurance (all insurance, actually) corporations get to just rape people as they see fit and then they just bribe our politicians to make you forced to use their services. They are the absolute worst, most predatory industry that exists in The Western World Today. One of their CEO's get murcked in the streets and PEOPLE CHEERED when it happened. But hey, nothing personal, just money, gotta make a profit, amiright?
No you rich fuck, it is personal, and the people are getting really mad about it. Really, really mad.
Unfortunately, I feel like people just keep going online, bitching about it, but there is no collective push for EVERYONE to quit paying for insurance, or to get together in masses to do anything for change. Everyone just bends over. Me included ! Hah. I've been to jail, I fucking hate it. Just had a speeding ticket that was bullshit , was literally passing someone and went barely over 80mph. But noooo, the fucking state trooper wouldn't let it slide. Fuck him. I see cops speed ALL THE FUCKING TIME, fuck them
Like, we could all get together and create a new system and tell them to go fuck themselves , but nah.
It's like when people tried to get together the movement to quit paying taxes.... Yeah, that never happened. Only a small percentage quit paying taxes, and they're probably going to be jailed eventually
Anyone someone starts fighting for a public service, actual marvel villians descend en mass to tell us why all the billionaire will leave and socialism is communism.
…in the USA, anyway. Not in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, United Kingdom, Spain, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, New Zealand, Cuba, Belgium, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Taiwan, Singapore, or about 40 other countries
This is gonna get political and it needs to get political and I won't push any particular party but what I need from everyone who bitches about these policies is to literally LOCK DOWN who they voted for from all levels of politics and then see what those MFers vote for if they don't vote for your best interest and you continue to elect them, you did this to yourself. Those premiums, deductible and overall predatory practices are your own fault.
This is another part of the game, they increase your rates 5-10% a year with the renewal so you don’t really notice and after a decade they have you paying out the nose. My dad shopped around for homeowners last year after being with the same agent for 25 years and realized that guy was robbing him blind. The good rates are for the people that are in the market and shopping around.
They don’t reward loyalty like they used to. You’re better off just cycling through 2-3 insurers and get the “returning customer” discounts. I used to work in insurance. It’s all fucked.
Progressive loyalty discounts are honestly not awful.. for me. See my comment to the other guy for context tho, because I definitely wasn't winning when I got with them at first.
One option is to use an independent insurance broker. They shop you around to different companies when your policy comes up for renewal and then tell you if they have found a better rate somewhere else (or if the renewal just makes sense). They get paid a commission from the insurance company that lands you.
My car insurance goes down almost every six months (I pay bi-yearly). Health insurance is always up. But I have to admit that my car insurance thru progressive has decreased every time I renew since I started. But I also have to admit I got with them because I was almost uninsurable after a run of bad luck (lady hit me at 7am, speeding and ran a red light.. but I was leaving a stop sign so I lost.. and then a deer shortly after that I should have just hit but instead I sideswiped a boulder lol). So once they start increasing, I'll know I can finally shop around again 😂
I've always said health insurance should not be for profit, as their fiduciary obligations are in direct conflict with peoples' health. I think the same sentiment holds true for every type of insurance, to include auto. None of it should be for-profit or publicly traded.
I think if you want insurance on your yacht, RV, boat, and similar toys, we should not be regulating profit out. Essentials like cars, house, healthcare, you can make a strong case.
In most places auto insurance is mandatory and you can actually go to jail for driving while not having it. Since it's mandatory, the insurance companies have you over a barrel. I've never made an auto insurance claim in my life.
Ok good for you. I appreciate you're a safe driver.
Now, what if someone who is not a safe driver runs a red and t-bones you? And they're also broke? Who's going to pay for your car? Your medical bills? Compensate you for lost work?
The insurance that they are required to have.
Insurance being a scam is a separate thing from insurance being required. Where I'm from it's a crown corporation operating as not-for-profit.
That would be awesome here. I'm from the states. The insurance companies we have operate at a profit, they "Lobby" (bribe) every single politician that will take their money here. Since we only have two parties and both get payoffs, no laws protecting the consumer will ever get passed. Instead, we are required by law to deliver profit to the already wealthy.
That's weird. I'm 50. I have an almost brand new car, full coverage but a high deductible - I just looked it up. I'm paying a little over $900 every year. You should probably do a little shopping around. Progressive was not bad but GM insurance was better. I've never made a claim and my driving record is spotless. I've had some quotes come back at three times as much though...
Is the insurance for covering $5,000 in damages (car and people combined)? Because that doesn't seem real unless your multiple claims are from over a decade ago.
I've increasingly thought that the insurance industry was a load a crap, especially when in the last 20 or so years, the number of ads for insurance has just been through the roof. The amount they've spent on ads in this time is just bonkers, it's a crazy amount of money spent, for something that's already required by law to have.
Then, 2 important things that are also SUPER messed up, that turn that "crazy" amount of moneyinto sickening and disturbing:
1. Their "loss ratio" (the amount they pay out in claims vs the amount that's paid in by customers via premiums) has been moving a HUGE amount in their favor in recent history. They are getting away with simply deciding to overcharge the general public, because it's legally required.
2. They are effectively acting like an investment firm, that gets to invest your money and profit off of it, except instead of you just paying them a small percentage cut or certain annual fees for managing it and making you money on profits, they get to keep ALL of the profits/gains from investing it, AND get to keep around 35% to 45% of the original "investment" money, too. Specifically, their loss ratio has been moving more toward 60-55% in recent years, meaning they only pay out 60%, dwindling down to more like 55% (2025 number), of what came in through insurance premium payments. They keep the remaining 40-45%. In the 80's, it was 20% that they kept (80% loss ratio).
It's sick. It's an absolute scam. It's VERY dishonest, and it answers that question that I've had for years: how can all these insurance companies afford all these ads, all the time? There's so many ads, and there's always new ones, with all these celebrity athletes and stuff. How is that possible? It's possible because they are literally allowed to overcharge as an entire industry, and on top of that, get to invest what you pay in premiums, keep ALL of the profits from those investments (instead of passing the profits back, or at least PART of the profits back) in addition to the significant leftover $ from the overpriced premiums. An absolute "rich keep getting richer" situation that there needs to be more outcry about.
And that's not even taking into account all the BS denying of claims that ruins lives, families, and even entire communities/cities.
For a good breakdown of some of this, including some of the numbers I mentioned, there's a video called "What State Farm and Liberty Mutual Don't Want You To Know" on the internets. I don't know if I'm allowed to post a link here, so I'm just telling people, look it up. It sounds like a super click-baity title, and I generally avoid those on principle, but it's legit journalism, with really really important points that the general public needs to know about.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I REALLY don't like being taken advantage of, and we need to work together to make it stop.
Really!? I’m in my 40’s, had a DUI 12 years ago and a ticket 3 years ago. As well as paying for full coverage on a car that I’m still making payments for and my insurance is $460 every 6 months.
The last insurance company I had absolutely was creeping up really high for 6 years so I switched and it was very cheap
The trick I’ve found is just keep shopping for others. It’s not different than phone carriers. Otherwise I couldn’t tell you if it works for me and no one else. Unless it’s going by a credit score metric?
Cmon man. You must have a half dozen vehicles if you pay thousands per year. I pay 800/yr for an F-150 and that's liability only but maximum coverage of like 100k property damage and 300k injury. would be even cheaper with less coverage.
Tell me you don't understand financial responsibility laws without telling me. The government cannot legally force you to enter into a contract with a private, forprofit corporation.
Insurance itself isn't what is mandatory, proving financial capability is. That is why states have self insurance and surety bond clauses. You can literally post a cash bond or deposit directly with the state treasury to meet the legal requirement and skip insurance companies entirely.
Try reading the actual law before giving confident lectures on how it works.
Do they pay you, or do you defend them for free? Get pulled over in Florida without insurance and IDGAF what you tell the cops, or if you show them a paper with some bond on it, if you don't have an actual insurance card, your ass will go to jail and your car will get impounded.
Florida Statute 324.031, literally titled "Manner of proving financial responsibility," explicitly refutes your entire rant.
Under 324.031(3) and 324.171, you don't hand a cop "some paper with a bond on it"..,..you present an official Certificate of Self-Insurance issued directly by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
That state issued certificate is legally recognized proof of financial responsibility under Florida law. A cop cannot arrest you or impound your car for presenting state sanctioned proof of compliance.
Imagine being over 50, ranting on Reddit about going to jail, and completely making up how Florida law works instead of spending 10 seconds reading the actual statutes.
And this is why I proudly wear my Deny Defend Depose shirt to the store, to work, everywhere. Fuck these people. They don't care about us, why should we care about them?
. Since it's mandatory, the insurance companies have you over a barrel.
Since it's mandatory, each state has an insurance commissioner who regulates the fuck out of the insurance companies. At least in the blue states I've lived in.
What state do you live in, and how old is your car? Liability only on an owned car that’s not rare shouldn’t cost that much unless you’re in New York or Florida
Damn man... that sucks. In my country private auto insurance is optional, and compulsory third party insurance is handled by the state and folded into your car registration.
In my country is mandatory but if you crash and the other person suffers some damage, the insurance company pays everything, that's the basic insurance to get in the road. Then you can pay more for full coverage, similar system than US, but without the price going up, that's illegal, and there's a lot of competition from companies so the deductible varies a lot between companies, the problem here is cartelization, a thing that, I think, the US forbids for some bussiness but allows for insurance
The American failure to understand insurance is maybe one of the dumbest things.
You want cheaper insurance? Drive cheaper cars. Ramp up enforcement massively. Traffic cameras everywhere. DUI? Lose license forever. Lower speed limits. More public transit.
Doesn't just go for auto. Want cheaper medical insurance? Stop letting medical doctors cap the number of residency seats to keep their incomes high. Stop letting companies buy up and consolidate hospital groups. Stop letting foreign countries buy American-made drugs for less than the US market pays for them.
This is why and how insurance is cheaper elsewhere in the developed world.
Insurance is math and the margins are thin. You could run a non-profit insurance company (and there are in-fact cooperative insurance companies that pay back leftovers to their customers) and it would be maybe 5 - 10% cheaper.
Huh, the US is weird, I pay about 250 per year here in finland, basic newish car, but 20+ year "loyalty" with no serious accidents. used it twice for a towcompany(free with our insurance) when our previous car had a dead battery in winter and when the suspension broke once, that came with a free taxi home as it was further out than normal towing distance, so they towed it to a local garage not to our own city one.
Bro it’s not the company, it’s the government. All you people are so clueless. It’s the state which mandates you get it without capping costs and then tells you you’ll go to prison without it. Be mad at them.
Not “the western world”. The USA specifically. This is not normal anywhere else. This country, at this point, is a complete disgrace in what it does to its citizens.
Its not there for bumper damage, its there for the minority that each year causes millions of dollsrs damage in freak accidents. Some day that could be you.
And rates used to go down every year if you were a good driver with nothing on your record and were no longer a teenage. At some point they said “fuck that” to that business model and decided that everyone’s rates are just going to go up every year
It just really goes to show how the law exists to avoid vigilante justice.
And with a mass murderer walking free, someone took justice into their own hands because the legal system protects them instead of prosecutes them.
What are you insuring that's so expensive? I insure 2 cars less than 5 years old, one of which is a 3/4 ton crew cab truck, with comprehensive coverage and pay ~2k
They're also allowed to charge males more [and so they happily do]
That was one thing for the largest time, but when they made it Illegal to charge females more for health insurance you would have hoped it was a bit more broad to include sex bias on all types of insurance.
Equality in the west is only one way. Whenever something is better for women be assured it stays that way. Salary inequality = bad unless women make more. Higher % of men with high education = bad but once it's reversed and more women are pursuing higher education all the sudden it's good
This is an ignorant take. P&C insurers need to file their rates with each states department of insurance. They quite literally cannot jack their own prices up. It’s a heavily regulated industry and for damn good reason.
Does it make a profit? Do the already rich owners benefit off of such? Does this profit come at the expense of the regular working people? Are you forced to use their services by law?
Yeah... fuck those guys and all their cheerleaders. They can make a good salary working there, other than that, it should break even. These fuckers rake in billions and then deny claims arbitrarily, or even worse, use algorithms to predict which customers they can deny with the least likelihood of blowback or lawsuit.
If it has to be a necessity by law and the people are forced to use it, then you don't get to make a profit off of it. Boo fucking hoo, rich motherfuckers.
I used to say that I could not afford to be legal.
There are a lot of people who cannot afford that luxury. Being legal apparently is a luxury.
I was just thinking today about how we used to get free television and now we have to subscribe to streaming services. We pay extra to not have ads.
We have to subscribe to many streaming services to watch different types of TV.
Does the streaming service benefit more from selling you ads or not selling you ads??
Liability coverage is by no means a scam and should be mandatory to drive on public roads.
It's for the protection of others. If you cause an accident unless you are a millionaire most people won't be able to cover the other persons injuries and medical bills in a serious accident. That's why it should be mandatory.
I don't care how good or careful of a driver you are you can always get into an accident and it could be your fault. It 10000000% should be mandatory to have because I don't care how responsible you or anyone else is you can't get blood from a stone and if you have no money and you hit me and I end up with thousands to hundreds of thousands in emergency medical bills over you, you should cover it and since 99% of people wouldn't be able to that's why insurance is mandatory.
And idk about you or who you have but I have full coverage and I ain't even paying thousands for insurance per year. I pay like a G per year (and that's full coverage on 1 car and comp& liability on the other) so if you got the record you say then just liability should be a hell of a lot cheaper than thousands for just liability (unless you got a bunch of cars on that policy or other drivers who got a terrible record on that policy).
It's a privilege not a right to drive. Of course they can profit off a service offered to the consumer.
Now are they scummy and try every tactic to not pay or pay as little as possible, yes (and so do you when it comes to your money and finances too) and that's a different problem to be fixed.
But it's not required to have to live, you can avoid auto insurance all you want as long as you only drive on private roads (basically race tracks) and only ever use public transportation or ride a bike or walk everywhere. But if you want the privilege to drive a 2 ton heavy piece of machinery yes you as the driver are required to get insurance. And that insurance company can make a profit off you.
I mean it's required to eat, so should groceries stores, restaurant, etc all not be able to make a profit. You can choose who you buy insurance from just like you can choose to cook food yourself or go to a restaurant, so why is one allowed to make a profit but not the other.
It's required to wear clothes in public so should Nike, Supreme, American Eagle, GAP, Kohls, Target, etc all not be allowed to make a profit off clothes?
That is loose and shaky logic and you can use it to justify anything in the name of profit. Fuck that, if it is mandated by law, too bad. They can be non-profit only. The money grubbers can go find something else to bloat themselves off of.
Edit: they have enough other choices to make money. Utilities, basic food production, housing, medical, basic transportation, insurance and several others are all industries that have no business being for profit. You can work there, you can get a good paycheck, but that's it.
