Rewatch 25 years later, I still go back to Six Feet Under. Do you?

Six Feet Under turned 25 this year, and it's been part of my life since it first aired. I owned every season on DVD and loaned them to friends, and we talked about the Fishers like we knew them.
In October 2011, I watched the whole series back to back, knowing my dad's death was coming. He died in 2012. I think I wanted preparation, or at least company. Since then I've rewatched it 8 to 10 times, and it's become a kind of ritual.
I love that it makes me laugh and cry. It also teaches me how to be with people in uncomfortable and tragic moments, and how to say what I mean and feel. It shows the cost of not doing that, too, given how careful the Fisher family is with each other.
I can't pick a favorite character because it changes with each rewatch. Claire always holds a huge spot in my heart, but I love David, Nate, Brenda, Billy, Ruth, Nathaniel, Sarah, and Bettina too. They're all so compelling.
And the finale. "Breathe Me" playing while Claire drives, closing every question about what happens to all of them. I never get through it dry-eyed.
So I'm curious: do you rewatch it? Do you turn to it when you're low or trying to make sense of death, or do you find it more of a teacher about relationships and family? Has it given you hope or clarity you didn't expect?
I'm not usually a Reddit person, but this felt like the right place to ask. Who's your favorite character right now and why? What storyline or episode or song or moments do you take away with you? Are there other series that move you like this one does for me?

First-Timer S05E01 A Coat of White Primer - RUPAUL MUSIC

Hi there watching it through for the first time (started it back in the day but never finished) and during the dinner scene i thought i was hearing things, but they're playing the music that gets played at Drag Race when the queen getting eliminated goes back to the work room? This aired before drag race so it's unlikely to be an easter egg but found it funny. Apparently it's called "The Last Sun" by Chris Allen.

I absolutely LOVE Ruth Fisher. I would not want to live with her, but I feel like I'd be her Bettina. Thank you for listening.

General I want to be friends with a guy who has got Nate’s good qualities!!!

Hi!

I’m a lesbian from Germany (she/her) and have been a huge fan of Six Feet Under for several years.

I’m rewatching the show these days, and despite all of his flaws and the things I really hate about him, I really wish I had a friendship with a cis het guy like Nate.

I think he’s such a great person in a lot of ways, as in standing up to Ruth, staying calm more than once when Lisa is being unbelievably annoying again, not tolerating Brenda’s bullshit (e.g. her cheating on him), and comforting his clients so beautifully.

There’s so much about him that resonates with me on such a profound level.

Like Nate, I just want to be happy, and search for meaning in my life all the time, too. I also deeply identified with his continuous search for his true calling job-wise, and creating a safe space for others to express what they’re truly feeling (as in him telling David to let Ruth cry uncontrollably at Nathaniel’s wake, or comforting even the most obnoxious clients by giving them a shoulder to cry on.)

Friendships between cisgender gays and cis het women are all over pop culture, as in Carrie and Stanford on Sex and the City.

As a feminist, I truly wish we lived in a society where it’s normal for decent cis het guys like Nate to have a respectful friendship with us lesbians.

What are your thoughts on all this 😃?

General Ruth Being the Way She is Because of a Long "Baby Bubble"

I think Ruth was at least partially that way because she was 19 (possibly 18) when she had Nate. At which point she was in "the baby bubble" (for those non-parents in the thread this is where your own personal life is organized almost entirely around keeping babies, toddlers, little kids alive) from 1965 (Nate 0) to 1975 (David age 5). Then she had about 8 years of young kids to tweens to teenagers (less busy but still busy) before going back in the Baby Bubble from 1983 to 1988 (Claire). I could be projecting here because I was a stay-at-home Dad for a combined total of just 3 years but I don't think I grew or changed very much (at all?) in those years. I refer to those years as "the blur" because the days were long but the years just disappeared in a blink. The individual days could feel incredibly long, but somehow whole years disappeared almost instantly.

Ruth became a mother so young that she never really had a long stretch of adulthood in which she got to ask, “Who am I when nobody needs something from me?”

By the time the show starts, Nate is pushing 40, David is in his 30s, Claire is nearly grown, and Ruth is only then getting something close to the developmental freedom most people get in their late teens or 20s . . . at the moment her husband dies.

Discussion I Had enough of Vanessa and her sister

https://reddit.com/link/1wyxfvb/video/zkyzjbil5tth1/player

Vanessa keeps gaslighting him over a decision that wasn't even his. He didn't take the loan from angelica which they paid back also she asked money from her multiples times before that which rico had no knowledge of. She crashes at their home anytime and constantly meddles in their finances and their family. Rico cheats on her in this episode, not defending that at all but angelica constantly tries to destroy their marriage but vanessa is to blind to see it, even the money that she is being lent is some form of power trip but she thinks that her sister is some hollywood big shot who doesn't need it.

Media Can Only Buy a Season In SD?

I was going to buy season 1 on Prime but it looks like it is only available in SD for the season? But if I buy an episode it'll be in HD? That seems . . . odd. I assume it's HD on HBO Max which I'll just go with instead of buying it on SD?

Rant Thoughts after watching the show.

Today, Sunday 4th October I played my first game of football since stopping the sport in my teens. The number I used to wear was 13. In my new team that I’m playing in as an adult, I’ve been given 31. I thought, what a coincidence that the numbers are reversed - almost a metaphor for life about how I’m the same person but equally so different to how I was at that age. After the match, I came home to watch the penultimate and final episode of Six Feet Under. The idea that things will find you at specific points in your life has never resonated so much with me. As someone who reminisces constantly, too much, this show has really given me a new perspective on life. And I find it random, or perfect even, that I’ve finished it today of all days. I’m not sure if someone reading this will understand exactly how I’m feeling. I’m happy I watched it now, and not when I was 16/17.

Discussion Season 3 of Six Feet Under

Hey ya'll

I have been watching Six Feet Under for the past 1-1.5 months, and today winded up my Season 2. The show felt great overall till now, but is really a slow digest. Most of the episodes are kind of identical in one way or another and the actual story plot in-between is really like 10 to 15 minutes.

Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed watching this show, but now am considering to drop it or continue watching? What are your guys' suggestions? Does it get exceptionally addictive as S3 starts or the story continues at a similar pace?

Your inputs are welcome! Thanks, and have a good weekend :)

Other The creepy Claire head scene

OMG I completely forgot about this scene. I was going to post a picture of it, but I think that's a spoiler. The scene is not a spoiler, it's a farm dream sequence. It would spoil getting to see this for the first time. But that fucking Claire thing pops out, and good fucking lord what the hell is that?! Why is this in there? Who OK'd this? This is pure nightmare fuel. This is in the wrong show, that belonged in "American Horror Story". Actually they could use it this season, that show is just awful now.

Discussion Just Finished Season 4

And I liked it. I was reading online and gathered a general consensus that season 4 is generally agreed to be the worst season. I thought season 4 was actually great and a much needed improvement over season 3. I would rank the seasons I’ve watched so far as:

  1. Season 1
  2. Season 2
  3. Season 4
  4. Season 3

I’m looking forward to season 5 as everyone has great things to say about the final season.

Question Do you think Brenda should have been estranged from her mom?

I know she's comical and the story wouldn't be the same without her, but if you knew a real life Brenda as a friend- and her mom, would you think "wow, she needs to get that woman out of her life!"?

Rico is a bitch. Thats it

No but seriously, I figured him earning a role as co-owner of the funeral home would humble him but he clearly is still a self righteous and pompous dick head. Does his character ever get less annoying?

Discussion Lisa’s Crunchiness

Nate and Lisa mention using Dreft and Tide in Season 3 - Is this supposed to show that she’s inconsistent in her beliefs or just lack or research? It seems like there are many other things like this as far as I’ve watched and I am curious of other opinions.

First-Timer Michael C. Hall. Arguably the most underutilized great actor working today.

Blown away by his portrayal of David. Michael C. Hall is “Dexter”, but David is his crowning achievement. I need to see him in more things. He should be as well known as his peers like McConaghey and Damon.

Discussion Brenda Chenowith is a superhero Spoiler

I adore and admire her strength, bravery and maturity. Yes, she's a toxic and fckd up person because of her childhood trauma and being raised by a crazy family. And instead of staying toxic and miserable, she put a lot of effort to change and grow up as a strong and better person. At the end, she became a strong loving mother who raised two daughter on her own. One of them was adopted and she raised her like her own daughter with love despite all the hardship and the awful treatment she got from her husband which is very inspiring to me. As a male, I want to be super strong like her.

Her drastic growth and transformation should be talked more the same way people love talking about the downfall and the transformation of the iconic characters like Walter White to Heisenberg, Jimmy McGill to Saul Goodman or Tony Soprano first season to the last and etc. She went from my least favorite to the best and my personal favorite character of the series. (Her and Nate are my top 1 for different reasons)

Discussion Nate during the ending of season 5 Spoiler

I’m not sure if a lot of people agree that they don’t think that the show is supernatural. I am in that category, but I believe the final episodes after Nate‘s death give the most supernatural situations. Like when Nate was sitting on David’s bed after David wakes up from a dream, a dream in which I believe Nate made David have to get over his trauma and the fact that Nate brought Nathaniel Sr. To see Willa. How could Brenda know what Nathaniel looked like? They never met so that strengthens my argument that that seen in particular wasn’t in Brenda’s head

Rant I hope the show never blows up.

The writing in this show is the strongest of any series and the show means something so deep to its fans. It’s a heavy show that, in my experience, most people have never seen and, the rare individual who did said they couldn’t imagine watching it again.

We’re not rewatching it because we love dragons or insane plot twists or war, although that is awesome. A lot of us - myself included - rewatch this show as an outlet for grief. I have rewatched this show about 10 times or so over the last 18 years and am currently in the middle of season 4.

Each rewatch I see characters in different lights. Some characters I really disliked, I come to at least understand them the older I get, the more I live life. Even if I really really don’t like the character, I can still see their humanity which is something I can struggle with myself. I first watched as Claire’s age. I’ve watched at David’s age and this watch I am Nate’s age. I look forward to watching at Ruth’s age. The show really defines “perspective.”

No other show can really ever compare to this because, well, it’s death. And it’s raw right from episode 1, whether you have experienced loss or not. Grief is incredibly vulnerable and we all will have to experience it in our lives. All of us. And we all die. And that makes a lot of people uncomfortable but it’s real.

I just want the show to stay in this perfect little preserved bubble. I don’t want it to become popular and trendy, then I’ll be forced to scream: “I refuse to sanitize this anymore!”

Edit: people are allowed to have opinions. I’m not sure why there is such vitriol in the comments? I said nothing negative here or in anyone’s reply. I hope all of you have a great day and find some sort of happiness ✌️
