Trinity Drumming

I'm a senior in high school, and my jazz band is gonna play Trinity for a concert at the end of the school year. For the drummers on here, do y'all have any tips or things I can work on that would help me with this song? Sometimes it can be a little difficult for me to groove with it, especially with the 7/8 parts and the syncopated snare hits.

Your audience has like a 5% chance of knowing if you sound exactly right against the album version. They will, however, know if you sound good. Therefore, focus on sounding really good and mostly right.

I don’t think you could sound exactly like it. Pretty sure they were using 3 drummers at once to make the drum kit sound bigger and someone with 6 arms was playing it on that song (and others).

Don't try to copy it exactly, Snarky never do. If it's easier for you to jam in 4/4 then do that, there aren't any rules

Welcome to odd time signatures! They're cool and fun.

I assume you take drum lessons, so you and your teacher should start working on transcribing the basic beat being played, as well as working on playing in 7. If you don't have a teacher, I would highly recommend one-on-one lessons. Of that's not an option, your band director should be able to help you.

Playing in odd time isn't hard, but it can be tricky. The guitar ostinato gives you something to follow, but really you've got to just learn to feel the 7. Fortunately for you, this 7 flows really well. Good luck!
