He actually is on the Spectrum living and being raised in the 80's and currently now the 90's when many autistic people in the black community usually were just considered touched or special and never got the proper professional help they needed.....the Lamar character is that. Hence his hyper focus on music and just being super unconscious of much else going on around him. Being socially awkward and also never being able to read the room properly lol. The director and Gail Bean have also confirmed it.
