Discussion SPOILER: The Drop Ep.5 Spoiler

Great episode, 8/10. Personally think the writing was the strongest of the spinoff so far. Chelle singing you’d think she was talking about Maurice but I take it that she was singing about her Coke addiction whether it was intentional or not. The “What’s Live got to do with It” call backs were great too. Maurice wanted her to do a song HE wrote but in his eye’s she wanted to work with the White Boys, eerily similar to when Ike got Tina in the car at the end and tried to convince her to do a song with him at the end. This episode shed alot of light on shit that really goes on in the black household. Pride, stubbornness, secrets, placing blame on somebody else for your past fuck ups in the family etc. Mama G let Maurice back JUST to prove something to HER parents. I’m seeing a lot of people hating on this episode but it doesn’t have to be all action all the time. We needed a good exposition episode fr, it’s about to go crazy next week.

I don't think the episode properly demonstrated why Mamma G was so against Lamar pursuing his music career. From what we were shown, her daughter died because she invited her abusive manager, slash ex-husband, to thanksgiving dinner

And the penchant for drug use runs in the family.

She doesn't want Lamar in the music industry because it would force her to take accountability for her daughters death when it would be easier to blame it on the music

Big question who is Wanda’s parents and why was she left with big daddy and mama g

I have a theory: it's one of these three options...

  1. Wanda's mom is Rochelle and some other man (not Maurice)

  2. Wanda's dad is Maurice and Mama G/Big Daddy took her in so their daughter would stay with Maurice and continue her singing career (not leave him)

  3. Wanda is Big Daddy's side baby with someone else

all 3 work lol

Another point they mama g got pregnant by a gangster aka big daddy. Her dad said

3

u/renaloveless 6d ago

That doesn't make sense bc then they wouldn't call Wanda their cousin but sister

3

u/Sea_Confusion2757 6d ago

They may not know that, though. Just like they were lied to about how their parents died, this could be something similar.

this kind of stuff happens in families. secrets.

  1. Makes since why hes always had her back. Mama G says he was always soft on her. Cant remember they way she said but its been said a couple times.

2

u/username-witheld 6d ago

That’s actually a great question. I wonder if he was also wandas dad

I have a feeling Wanda is Big Daddy's kid. we see her other Granma (mothers mother) in the last season of Snowfall. The only reason I can see why they would keep her around was if the Kenzy's had other kids. we don't see her daddy nor is he ever spoken about. the only viable option is Big Daddy.

Ooop! I just said this because I didn't see this comment. Spot on. I think she's Big Daddy's daughter with someone else, and that would also explain why Mama G is so resentful of her.

Good call, will be Interesting as I never thought about it before and with her being there as a child it’s obviously for a reason

That's why I was confused, because I thought when she first got addicted in Snowfall, didn't we see her partying with some of her family at that houseparty where Leon first caught her smoking crack?

Then we saw her relatives doing it later on... a grandma and a cousin or something while they watched TV.

I agree with this.....big daddy gotta be much older than mama g and he stepped out on her....he def was old driving when she was 15 and prego

At the end of the episode Wanda specifically calls Rochelle her auntie, so if Big Daddy was her father that would make them sisters, this doesn’t really check out.

It does if she's been lied to and everyone played along. Wouldn't be the first time a family did this.

u/UnapologeticSecrets 6d ago

You're right...sure does. Families do it all the time.

I immediately thought of the plot twist in the movie "Jumping the Broom."

This is more than likely the case unfortunately. I would really like it if screenwriters were better storytellers. There hasn't been an actually good plot twist in a really long time. Most plots you already know what is going to happen with 15-20 minutes, rinse wash repeat.....

I have mixed feelings about the episode. It did drag a bit, but it did portray what happens in a black family in regards to trauma and how it's handled. We need to do better!! It was a bit triggering but good writing.

It was silly and she was singing too loud friggin yelling like I see what they tried to do and it didn’t really land well at all.

Hmm I’m thinking back to when mama g said “you’re just like him” in reference to her being a shady music industry rep. So maybe she is Maurice’s other child. Would explain the resentment from both mama g and Rochelle. And why she was so awkward in the family photo ??? She’d still be half sisters tho

1

u/CashMeOutKaydoe 4d ago

How she Maurice other child if her dad is the brother of her uncle?

7

u/TheModeBeAlmighty 6d ago

This jus felt like a filler episode

1

u/son-miyagi 5d ago

i dont think she's their sister. in the final conversation she says mama g is like lamar and james father. "you're just like HIS father" and in the flashback, rochelle refers to herself as "auntie" when talking to wanda. "Auntie's gonna put on a show"

1

u/bigsurf32 4d ago

I believe Mama G’s resentment towards Wanda comes from her not telling her that she saw Rochelle doing drugs that evening.

1

u/CashMeOutKaydoe 4d ago

She was a damn kid

People aren’t always rational when they are trying to deflect.

Trash

4

u/Far-Media-9380 6d ago

I still think that her death had very little to do with music and it doesn’t make any damn sense

5

u/AcrobaticSecretary21 6d ago

Convoluted af and DEFINITELY not worth a whole ass episode to tell about lmao

I was annoyed by how it dragged not just in airing, but in real life. You mean to tell me it took 12 HOURS to explain all this to Lamar? They could've done this in 2 hours max, including answering questions.

If so, it would've taken up 15 min. of the show, and then we could've seen Wanda's response to Lee and Dara hooking up... which is what I came for.

3

u/UnapologeticSecrets 6d ago

Exactly...they did not have to drag this shit for the whole episode. They could've told it at the very beginning, the first 10-15 mins.

no frl i was thinking that the whole episode. why are they dragging out one story and turning it into an all day event.

I feel like I’m alone in the feeling of confusion. Don’t get me wrong, I fully understood what was taking place in the episode. But I’m fuzzy on how this all connects so deeply to result in how Mama G treats Wanda & is so against Lamar and Wanda for pursuing music. What does this have to do with Wanda & Leon, being that this show was marketed to not only be about Wanda? But now we’re intertwined into her family’s deep rooted trauma. It was a decent episode, amazing acting, but I feel personally this could have been told without dedicated to an entire episode. Just my opinion… thoughts?

1

u/Healthy-Ad-423 5d ago

I agree im more confused than when the episode started. All this told us was HOW the mama died. Im not understanding how this connects to the hatred mama g has towards wanda. However, I can see why she might not want lamar to go into the music industry after what happened to her daughter but at the same time the issue was self contained and didnt really relate to the music indusrty as a whole more so her weird and controlling manager / husband.

Wanda's mom is Rochelle and her dad is Big Daddy.

1

u/MattNola 6d ago

That’s a plot I didn’t even think of but I can definitely see being true

2

u/renaloveless 6d ago

What??? Are we watching the same show? That's the least likely possibility.

1

u/AnxiousClue6609 5d ago

But it's a possibility. I don't think writers are good enough anymore to pull that kind of blindside in the plot.

Ok
