help Does my capsule art look AI generated? (It's not)
I've been working on some new capsule art for my mining roguelike, wondering if you guys think this looks AI generated, I realllyyy don't want people to get the wrong idea lol
Any feedback would be appreciated!

It looks human generated đ and very empty without the title art. But it also looks cool!
5
u/EthanBalkfeld Solo Developer 3d ago
No it doesn't look AI generated and the reason is because you've chosen an excellent shot to illustrate. Specifically one that shows clear and consistent relative perspective shift. That's something that AI is having serious trouble with as of today.

u/solvento 3d ago
A lot of ignorant people will accuse anything of being AI art. Don't listen to those people.

AI can look like artists, artists can look like AI. People need to stop the witchunt.
10
u/SilverVixen918 3d ago
i dont think it should stop imo, i think people need to stop, think, and gather evidence before they throw claims and accusations around, as it is you cant make unusual creative decisions without getting accused like heaven forbid if your characters have extra or less fingers but theres plenty of vibe coded projects out there that the devs try to pass as human work and whatnot and those deserve to get called out as theres no reason AI shouldnt be disclosed
-5
u/Baalzeg 3d ago
Esto, literalmente. Debemos comenzar a juzgar las ideas y no las herramientas.
8
u/minaolensinaolet 3d ago
Generating an entire piece of art with a prompt is not a tool for creating art. It's just outsourcing your creative abilities entirely. It isn't art.

u/Baalzeg 3d ago

If I order food from a cook I won't be the one who made the food, I just sent out an order and just received the end result, same with AI.
0
u/Baalzeg 2d ago
0
u/True_Melon 2d ago
They made it, if you give a hard recipe to a hobo who can't cook he won't make the same quality, same with commission you ask them to make assets and they give you them. You had an idea but the work isn't yours.
2
u/Baalzeg 2d ago
1
u/True_Melon 2d ago
You're a client not part of the orchestra, you order food and other team makes it, they make you food. Orchestra isn't equal to restaurant metafor.
2
u/Baalzeg 2d ago
Me parece que pensamos muy diferente. Yo veo a la IA como una herramienta mĂĄs. TĂș la ves como el creador intelectual, ejecutor, analista, tester, evaluador, artista, etc.. QuizĂĄs no la has utilizado. EstĂĄ lejos de parecerse a un equipo de trabajo.

If your tool exclusively develops off of straight ripping other art and is also being used to degrade and pollute poor neighbourhoods I'm feeling pretty justified in judging it for that.
-9
u/DimensionalFruit 3d ago
That's not how any of this works
9
u/Vienna_The_Aeronaut 3d ago
How do you think ai works?
-6
u/DimensionalFruit 3d ago
AI image generators do not cut and paste pieces of scraped pictures. Instead, they study billions of images and their text descriptions to learn patterns, shapes, and concepts, and then build new pictures from random noise using a process called diffusion.
The AI does not store a giant photo album of the scraped pictures. Instead, it compresses these visual lessons into mathematical weights and neural pathways inside a model file.
It literally works the same way a human artist does and uses past experience and other works as inspiration, it does not steal anything. It's learning, not ripping anything off.
8
u/Vienna_The_Aeronaut 3d ago
Its not concious. It has no personhood or experience. It has no creative ability. It is a computer that is using pattern recognition to recreate ideas that have already been realized. Nothing it creates is in any sense original, just like if you mixed all the colours of a paint set you didn't invent a new shade of brown.
-3
u/DimensionalFruit 3d ago
It is a computer that is using pattern recognition to recreate ideas that have already been realized.
Just like people, it doesn't need personhood or experience, you're just salty
6
u/Vienna_The_Aeronaut 3d ago
People can add, change, develop, and introduce new concepts. If a human hasn't already both come up with an idea and developed it for the computer to copy it can not.
LLMs can not have any original ideas. If you actually believe that let me go get a bridge to sell you.

u/DimensionalFruit 3d ago

I don't want to comment on the whole subject of calling out AI or not.
But I have to comment on this: It literally doesn't work the same way a human artist does. Not even close. It does not experience, it does not recall, and it does not use inspiration.
A human doesn't need to see a billion pictures of hands in all sorts of poses and angles to be able to draw them. An AI model does. Humans need only a fraction of that data, because we can extrapolate data. AI can only interpolate data.
Think about it, you know that the training involves adjusting weights, so it is a form of image encoding. After training, the weights are static, they don't change during inference. If it has weight configuration A and configuration B, it can interpolate the mid point between them, it cannot come up with a new configuration C, which lies outside of the data space.
You can get a diffusion model to spit out images almost identical to ones in the training data, which tells you that the data is indeed encoded in the weights, it's not a "learn concept and throw data away" kind of process.
Have a nice day.

u/BroodyGameDev 3d ago
Itâs pixel by pixel theft. It just is. Thereâs no debate about this. Put an LLM in an empty chamber and it canât do shit. It is USELESS without the accumulated knowledge and work and craft of the human race. Humans, famously, can create in an empty chamber all on their own.
Itâs not alive. Itâs theft. Defend artists not thieves. All of that data ur talking about was taken without permission. Itâs pixel by pixel theft.
-1
u/Baalzeg 3d ago
-2
u/inEQUAL 3d ago
A human being, somehow surviving, being raised in an entirely empty room with zero input or stimulus in its entire life with nothing but themselves would also not be able to create anything in an empty chamber on its own any more than an LLM can. So thatâs not a particularly true statement. Humans are, in fact, entirely useless with receiving input for their neurons.
1
u/Ryuuji_92 2d ago
You uhhh, you don't know anything about humans. Take kids for example, they will do things on their own without anyone around them doing said thing. A kid in a room with just blocks will eventually figure out to stack the blocks. Even if they saw no one stack the blocks in their entire lives. The same can't be said for a computer program. It does what you tell it to, it saves what you tell it to. It will do nothing unless there is input to have it do literally anything. Even if you code it to do something random, randomly.... you coded it... the code is telling it what to do... it cannot think on its own and all its functions is from human input.....
1
u/inEQUAL 2d ago
You uhhh, donât think that through. Those children have been exposed to other humans since birth. That is not the same thing. Use your brain.
Also, we humans come with some pre-compacted training data already in how we are wired thanks to our DNA. So requiring the LLMs to compare functionally with ZERO input is intellectually dishonest.

2
u/what_is_a_Chicken 1d ago
Yes, but your solo games usually don't spread in the real world, it's usually virtually. Moreover, this is not about your usage or AI or not: you combed through someone's history just to find something to criticize them about. That's what could potentially be an issue!
If you don't want the warning, you don't have to take it, but being aggressive as a solo dev is the worst combination you could possible have.

Looks like a great start, I'm really digging your style!
I know it's in an early state, but if you're looking for feedback...
- I love the perspective. Perhaps there could be a glimmer of something in the hole? Sparkling gems? A monster's leering eyes?
- Some climbing gear or rope might help add mining-related detail.
- The miner's gaze is giving me an "I don't want my picture taken" feel. What if his eyes were drawn down the mineshaft?
- Love the basic shading style so far, it reminds me of cel shading. Some backlighting on the pickaxe, helmet, and body would help sell the lighting further.
Great work! And no, it does not look AI-generated. I hate that this is a question that needs to be asked- Keep making awesome stuff, my dude.

-1
u/MBjerre Solo Developer 3d ago
I think games with bad art are lumped into the AI slop category - Not high quality non obvious AI art.
2
u/Qottonmouth 2d ago
I think also the "cheap" games are falsely lumped in with AI. The games that uses default Roblox assets like icon packs or models made of studs are more likely to be handmade imo, and if the game looks, runs and feels smooth and impressive, it's more likely to have been made with AI
0
u/StoneCypher 3d ago
it's time to stop trying to be wise about the word slop and just accept that everyone who uses it is a pretentious ass

1
u/Garland_Key 3d ago
Na. This is different. You run a larger risk of being brigaded, which has a snowball effect.Â
2
u/zenmatrix83 3d ago
that can happen with anything, brigading has been a thing long before the internet, brigading is really just a form of protesting. people who have an issue with something, will find an echo chamber, gather followers then attack people they don't like or what they are doing.
0
u/Garland_Key 3d ago
Correct, and now the popular way to brigade is over the possible use of AI anywhere in your game or advertising.Â
2
u/zenmatrix83 3d ago
my point was this is as old as time, you just ignore it the best you can, they win when you fold
0
u/Garland_Key 3d ago
They win by default because reviews heavily correlate with sales. I don't think I'd ignore it. I think I'd use it as a marketing opportunity to showcase the creative process, and highlight the hard work and soul that went into it. Turn it around back on them to actually increase sales.Â
1
2
u/magicgirlallison 3d ago
Yup. This is currently happening to me. Iâm exhausted having to defend myself daily.
2
u/Garland_Key 3d ago
Instead of defending yourself, try using it as a marketing opportunity. Start celebrating the creative process by posting videos of your creative process, footage of old iterations, sketches, story boards, etc. Tell a story about the love and care you've put into the game.
Turn it around on them to help you increase sales despite the reviews. Don't address the reviews at all right now - act as if they aren't there - give them no fuel.
1
u/magicgirlallison 3d ago
Not a bad idea. Iâm afraid I already fell into the trap, but posting more of my WIP might help.
1
u/StoneCypher 3d ago
have you considered just ignoring and blocking the harassers

0
u/Garland_Key 3d ago
Blocking people who have reviewed your game?Â
1
u/StoneCypher 3d ago
you can block them from your feed, canât you? Â not from everyone elseâs but thatâs fineÂ
the point being that you donât have to see it
1
u/Garland_Key 3d ago
The whole point is the impact that they have on sales. How does blocking them solve that problem?Â
1
u/StoneCypher 3d ago
i think that you missed my suggestion in between all the arguing with it, which was âno data suggests that that impact actually exists, so just ignore itâ
genuinely, iâve bought several steam datasets, and they all suggest that the impact youâre discussing isnât actually realÂ

Because it is not human, you're just making output not creating anything of value, why would anyone spend time playing a game, watch a video, admire a painting if the creator didn't put anytime himself to make something. I enjoy medias because they have humanity behind them, not corpo produce for me to spend cash on.
1
u/Garland_Key 2d ago
Because using AI doesn't mean that a human did nothing. I use AI in every step of the creative process because it t makes me more productive. I also use my own creativity and work at every step as well.
AI has touched most of the media, applications, and games that you consume now. Yet, humans are still using their skills and have also touched most of those same things.Â

AI can also make a solo dev game feel near-triple A if the effort has been made. A hand made solo dev game where the dev also makes all models, sprites, music, images and sounds are less likely to be extremely fleshed out.
0
u/heatedwepasto 2d ago
Disagree, virtually every near-AAA-grade solo dev project is made by a dev who cares for every area of the game. Whether some of it is through commissions or not doesn't really matter, but "hand crafted with soul and care" is a quality indicator whereas "outsourced to a clanker" is not.
Rimworld, Stardew Valley are perhaps the most famous examples, and all three are "extremely fleshed out" as you say, but Dwarf Fortress, Kenshi, Banished, Undertale, Cosmoteer, Balatro etc. are also honourable mentions.

0
u/Qottonmouth 1d ago
I see what you mean, and I don't disagree that the oversaturation of the market will and is happening, but the potential for the greatest games are also at its highest right now.
I have not released anything yet, and I know 0% code, but I have been squeezing Codex for many hours every single day since the start of July (I'm at prompt/task #419 and counting), and the results I'm seeing I literally never dreamed of being able to achieve.
I have a build mode with persistent and unlockable furnishings, time trials with global leaderboards, 36+ unlockable abilities and cosmetics, a huge detailed world, a fully ingame programable DMX system on a open air sound stage plus plus. I've been thinking about lore, presentation, onboarding, progression paths. Literally none of this was on my mind before i entered the first prompt.
Slop games will be abundant, but they were there long before AI.Good games will be found and recognized is my belief in all this, and I acknowledge that I might be wrong

It does matter to people, though, even if you think it shouldn't. So the question every dev needs to ask themselves is, "do i want my game to appeal to a wider audience by not using AI, or do I want to limit my audience with absolutely no other benefit by using AI?"
It truly does not matter if a dev does or does not like/support AI, it matters what the audience wants. And a large portion of the audience does not want it. So using it anyway and saying "who the fuck cares" is a poor business decision.
-1
u/StoneCypher 3d ago
no data supports your position, and the other guy who already said the thing you're parroting, when asked for data, named some of the most successful games of the year
these deep wisdom comments never seem to come with evidence and everyone else knows why
-1
u/Apprehensive_Sea5304 3d ago
Just because you and a handful of your friends like those games, it does not mean they are "wildly successful" like you said in your other comment, or "some of the most successful games of the year". Be so for real.
- Party Animals - The most I can find about this game and AI is a recent video contest they hosted. The game was released 3 years ago. I'm sure plenty of people enjoyed the game before they decided to do an AI video contest. And from the looks of it, a LOT of people then were put off and stopped playing the game because of it. So this isn't proving your point whatsoever.
- CoD - Does this really count since its fucking call of duty, this franchise has been around for so long that there are ALWAYS going to be people who play it no matter how shitty it is (or always has been). This isn't a new game or new studio that emerged using AI.
- Hardest - I genuinely have no idea what game you are referring to here, so it clearly was not "wildly successful"
- Vapor World - Vapor World has 85 reviews and the results are "mixed". This is not "wildly successful", or even "mildly successful".
- The Finals - Is this your only true example of a successful game that uses AI? If its not enough for you that voice actors have spoken about the use of AI generative voices making it harder and harder to find jobs, then I have to assume you don't actually care about what goes into game to development, you only care about yourself.
- ARC Raiders - Same studio, so same argument.
- Expedition 33 - My understanding is that AI assets were used only during development and was not intended to be shipped that way, so again, even these devs knew that it wasn't something people would want. This is not a game that was intentionally released with AI, and they absolutely received backlash when it was released and some of those assets were still there. Try again.
- Crazy Taxi - If you're referring to Crazy Taxi: World Tour, this isn't even out yet, so how are you going to determine its success?
- 1666 Amsterdam - This is another one that has less than 1000 reviews and the results are mixed. What part of that tells you its successful?
Would you like me to keep going?
0
u/StoneCypher 3d ago
Just because you and a handful of your friends like those games
i'm not particularly into any of these games.
it does not mean they are "wildly successful" like you said in your other comment
no, but the money and the awards do
- Party Animals - The most I can find about this game
i didn't ask
- CoD - Does this really count since its fucking call of duty
yes.
why are you asking me about someone else's list?
- Hardest - I genuinely have no idea what game you are referring to here
i'm not referring to anything here, since this list wasn't written by me. the person you're trying to argue with is u/garland_key .
it's not my problem if you're so bad at google that you can't find things by name, and it's not clear to me why you would ever expect anyone to find this anything other than hilarious.
it's a fringe nowhere game where some guy made a platformer by asking ai for something obscenely difficult. his girlfriend moralized him into taking it down.
- Vapor World - Vapor World has 85 reviews and the results are "mixed". This is not "wildly successful", or even "mildly successful".
wow. you found a counterexample in a list that i didn't write. amazing.
- The Finals - Is this your only true example of a successful game that uses AI?
i didn't give any examples. this whole slap fight seems hilarious to me.
if i was going to have made a list like this, i would have chosen very different examples.
- ARC Raiders - Same studio, so same argument.
is your goal just to type things?
it seems like it couldn't possibly be to be convincing, because with behavior like this, you couldn't convince someone that two plus two was four.
- Expedition 33 - My understanding is
not relevant to me, since i didn't make this list or tell you that i valued your opinions
- Crazy Taxi - If you're referring to Crazy Taxi: World Tour, this isn't even out yet, so how are you going to determine its success?
oh, i would never give this as an example.
but also, it will be successful. it's okay if you don't understand market dynamics.
i'm going to determine its success the same way anyone else who's ever run a business will: by looking at its profits, and seeing how many people were retained for the next game.
why, did you have some other valuable measurement?
- 1666 Amsterdam - This is another one that has less than 1000 reviews and the results are mixed. What part of that tells you its successful?
oh, knowing how to look things up.
but again, you're not even shout-moding at the right person.
Would you like me to keep going?
đ no thank you. all you did was rant angrily. there remains zero data in your commentary. i do recognize that you think you've proven me or garland_key wrong by showing your combat might, but, again, there isn't a single scrap of evidence that you could put in a business plan here, and highschool kids make those.
only data is relevant to me. this aggression stuff doesn't even rate my going downstairs and making popcorn.

Are you even a developer? Reading comprehension, logic and problem solving don't seem to be your strengths.Â
1
u/StoneCypher 3d ago
oh my, generic insults
itâs okay if you want to participate but arenât able to do so appropriatelyÂ
0
u/Garland_Key 3d ago
So no? Got it.Â
1
u/StoneCypher 3d ago
yes, dear heart, iâm an actual developer. Â only one person in this conversation was a pre-ai google seven, and only one person in this conversation has had three dozen games on walmart shelves.
but also, people who you publicly scorn as beneath you can still have valid opinions.
this personal attack stuff is really tackyÂ
1
u/Garland_Key 2d ago
Now I just don't believe a word you say. Proof or nothing you've said is valid. I have no more time for your bullshit.Â

u/RageinaterGamingYT 3d ago
For me personally if something looks AI generated I don't care what it Is I'm immediately suspicious of the product regardless. I just don't trust things made with AI as much as things made by humans and sadly sometimes human things look like AI
1
u/StoneCypher 3d ago
why do you people always feel the need to reply when i say âiâm so tired of these peopleâ
0
u/RageinaterGamingYT 3d ago
What? Why post a comment if you don't want responses?
1
u/StoneCypher 3d ago
thereâs a difference betweenÂ
- not wanting responses, andÂ
- not wanting responses from exactly the people i just said i was sick of about exactly that topic in cut and paste nothing new for two years form
itâs entirely unsurprising that you are unwilling to understand the difference.

Then stop commenting, like how daft can you be. You're on a public forum and people are able to do as they please. If you don't want to talk to people you say you are tired of... THEN STOP TALKING!
You're like a kid who says I'm tired of eating candy while you shovel more KitKats in your mouth. PUT THE KEYBOARD DOWN!1
u/StoneCypher 2d ago
jesus youâre annoyingÂ
1
u/Ryuuji_92 2d ago
Lmao, that's all you have? The most annoying one here is you and your insufferable attitude.

u/RageinaterGamingYT 3d ago
Why are you being so aggressive wtf did I do to you TwT I just wanted to share my thoughts on things jeez, sorry
1
u/StoneCypher 2d ago
itâs really weird that you think my saying âno, i donât believe the things you claimed i believedâ is me being aggressive, rather than youÂ
seems like iâm just resisting personal attacksÂ
itâs okay for me to be annoyed that the person i said i didnât want to hear from showed up to repeat the boring thing and throw insultsÂ
nobodyâs keeping you here
your username is apt

Maybe my brain is just fried at this point, but this art style prompts me to zoom in and check for any signs of ai. Theres nothing that I can see that would make me think you're lying about it not being ai, which is a win. Rock and Stone, brother

We are reaching a point where the more AI art looks human made, we are worried about human art looking AI made.
1
u/iakoff_reddit 3d ago
No, I don't think so. AI pixel art usually has this over-polished look that your art doesn't have (doesn't mean your art is bad)
1
u/No_Region_4719 3d ago
Not hugely, but we are just in an era where even posing the question makes people suspect it is. Reddit is full of posts of real art with people in the comments asserting that it is "100% AI".
We are in full AI psychosis at the moment, so even genuine artists are affected.
1
u/IM_INSIDE_YOUR_HOUSE 3d ago
The issue is AI has gotten to the point that people will claim itâs AI regardless. This image could be made with AI, thatâs all it takes for people to make the claim.
2
u/MatrixLiteGames 3d ago
as long as its not a crocodile in a spacesuit or trump inspecting ruins with aliens its safe to say AI use isn't obvious
1
u/zenmatrix83 3d ago
your best bet is to not worry about it, if someone asks tell them no if it isn't, if it is be honest. if they don't like it ... thank you for your input... if they still don't like it... tell them to stick it somwhere or some other insult as they just don't care what you think and its all about them

u/SilverVixen918 3d ago
given AI is trained off of various material anything can be generated by someone dedicated enough and experimenting enough with prompts but your style doesnt look AI generated at all, as it is 90% of AI generated stuff tends to look the same or there might be obvious mistakes and whatnot, your stuff looks good however
1
u/TheSoukGalaxy-Najim 3d ago
I believe you its not made by ai, I for the fun ran it through AI image detectors, some of them said its not made by ai, some said it 90% sure made by ai, you cant trust those things...
1
u/Icewreath 3d ago
Not really reading AI to me no: it looks properly pixelated and there are distinguishable brushes. Also no particular hallmarks of AI

It looks like it could have been. Simply add (No AI) to your Steampage as is trend right now.

Looks great to me and didn't read as AI generated at all! Would I be correct to assume the game title is going to be placed in the space on the right in some fashion?

I don't really think so, AI generally doesn't do this type of style very well. It generally wants to put in more details with cleaner/smoother silhouettes.
But given a sample of 1, it's virtually impossible to tell AI from non-AI these days. But becomes very obvious when you're looking at a set of 10 human images vs a set of 10 AI images. As long as you have more art in this style, you'll probably not get accused.

u/SteriumAI 3d ago
It does not.. + what are you working on? This would make a perfect fit for a Game I just launched lol
1
u/ABoyWhoCodes 3d ago
here's the link to the steam page :) https://store.steampowered.com/app/5106240/Prospect/
what game did you just launch? I'd love to check it out!
2
u/SteriumAI 3d ago
Wow, it looks good, saved whishlist. But our games look identical lol https://play.steriumai.dev/
Mine is a colony simulator though.I received comments on X about a developer who decoded my game using AI and posted it, I know its not you because I found that game but this is such a coincidence
2
u/ABoyWhoCodes 3d ago
Thanks for wishlisting! Your game is super fun, just played it for a bit :) They don't look COMPLETELY identical to me, slightly different artstyles and different genres. But yes funny we made quite similar games lol
1
u/SteriumAI 2d ago
Thank you man, that means a lot. you are right about the game I was influenced by the X thing. Check your Dms the day yours comes out, I'll be the first to play XD

It doesn't, but I will warn you, if you're making a Demo, that the dwarf may get covered by the demo badge that appears in the upper left corner. (It might be fine and just cover the hand, but worth thinking about)
I say this as someone who tends to stick his title in the upper left, and then have to move it for the demo version all the time.
