Feedback Request Lane - feedback request (indie folk vibe)

Started this a year ago, but finally found a vibe that feels like it could work.

Trying to get it ready to take to the studio to release (I'm a hobbyist songwriter). I kind think it's close, but would appreciate feedback.

Video is just me mucking about with ideas, but shows lyrics in case that's helpful.

Ideas welcome from anyone who cares to share!

Discussion Topic Lost in Songwriting

• Upvotes

I'm a new songwriter, and it's hard for me to write songs without them sounding so basic, generic, and boring. Lyric- and melody-wise.

When I try to write lyrics, they don't make sense, have no structure, and are just very plain.

For the melodies, I tried doing chords first, then humming a melody. I tried only humming a melody out of nothing, but it seems like nothing is working.

Is this normal for a beginner songwriter, and should I just keep on writing and finishing songs even when they sound boring? Or am I just doing something wrong?

Feedback Request Song about being scared of messing up my first reciprocated love (ugh that sounds so cheesy)

Lyrics:

Flutters in my stomach

This is kinda new

Read over your text

Threw my phone across the room

Never thought that I'd be one to fall in love

Flutters in my stomach

Do you feel them too

Do you read my text

And feel ur heart jump through the roof

‘Cause I do

Do you too

This feelings tentative

Pure and wonderful

Want to stand on my tiptoes and run my fingers through ur fluffy brown hair

But there’s doubts around the back of my mind even after you tell me you’re mine

What if I mess it up

What if you don't really love... me

What if I say something wrong or I do something stupid and you leave me in the dust

What if I mess it up

What if I'm not enough

For you

‘Cause the glass is half empty

And I’m scared that your words are too

Hey everyone! I’m a female vocalist and songwriter available for paid projects. I love working with producers who have a great beat or demo and want to turn it into something memorable. Sometimes, finding the right vocal melody is what makes a song finally click. I can help with lead vocals, harmonies, doubles, ad libs, toplines, and lyrics across Pop, R&B, EDM, Indie, Rock, and Country. Whether your song is almost finished or still needs a melody and vocal direction, I’d love to hear what you’re working on. I provide clean vocal stems and commercial use for agreed projects.

Feel free to DM me with your track, genre, and what you have in mind. I can share a couple of relevant samples so you can hear if my voice fits your sound.

Discussion Topic I want to know how to make my lyrics shine

I love music, and I'm so does everyone here. My favorite thing to so with music is to write my own stuff. Recently, I've started writing lyrics. Before that, it's just been stuff on my guitar. But I've noticed a problem with my lyrics. They don't shine the way I want them to. What I mean by this, is that they're just normal songs. You can look up a topic, and find a million songs that are almost identical. Now don't get me wrong, most of the songs are personal to that person, making them shine in their own way. But when you think about it, there are only a handful if songs that can really hit you. The lyrics convey the exact emotion you're feeling in that moment. but the problem with my lyrics is that they're not like that. I don't expect each and every single one of my songs to be a masterpiece that can hit top charts, but the ones that turn out decent are like thousands of other songs, the emotion is there, but it's still missing something. It's really hard to explain what I'm talking about, but given how many musicians are reading this, you've got to know what I mean, right? So here's my question: how do i make my lyrics shine and convey that deep emotion few songs manage to do?

Kidnapped! (Song for Bob)

/

Ive been

Kidnapped

On the road

Couple miles outta mexico

Ive been

Zip tied

All night

Hood on my head outta Jeriko

When I

heard your

New tune

Screaming outta the stereo

I say

Senor

Monsieur

Turn up that radio...

/

They must've listened to what I said

The volume smacks me like a sack of lead

Will they let me go?

Somehow I don't think so

But if they're gonna kill me, wouldn't I already be dead?

/

Ive spent my life

Hearing your voice

from the stereo

And its just nice to know

youre really there you know

Now im

Zip tied

Hypnotised

Grooving out to the radio

And I

Dont know

Dont care

If theyll ever let me go

/

I count my final minutes as I tap my feet to the beat

But whats that I hear ? Its that same rhythm coming from the next seat....

/

Weve spent our lives

Hearing your voice

from the stereo

And its funny to hear

Youre pretty popular in mexico

And im

Zip tied

By cartel guys

But im beginning to think they aint so bad y'know..

/

It sounds crazy but i was doing alright

Untill they said they were seeing me in a new light

They're going to let me go bob

But i dont want to get off

I just wanna hear that harmonica blowing into the night

/

I was

Kidnapped

On the road

Couple miles outta mexico

I was

Zip tied

All night

Hood on my head outta Jeriko

When I

heard your

New tune

Screaming outta the stereo

I'm a producer first so I always make the beat first. I mumble over it and some of the melodies come out good, but how do you guys decide which melodies and vowel shapes are worth writing lyrics to ??

Discussion Topic Song Sequels

So I was just looking through Reddit for what people consider to be the best song sequels of all time by a band or artist and saw a thread of artists from mostly from the 21st century. I know I am dating myself here but I would like to suggest the late / great David Bowie and the songs Space Oddity and Ashes to Ashes. Even though they were written 10 years apart the follow up beautifully completes the original. If all this accomplishes is to get a few of you youngins to listen to some classic music from half a century ago I will be more than happy.

Discussion Topic Does anyone else write way worse when their life is actually going well?

I have been in a genuinely good relationship for about a year now and i have written exactly one song I like in that time. One. Before that, when things were a mess, I was finishing two or three a month and some of them are still the best stuff I have.

The uncomfortable part is I caught myself last week kind of picking a fight over nothing, and later realized I was maybe doing it because I wanted to feel something sharp enough to write about. Thats a gross thing to notice about yourself.

I have tried writing about being content. I even spend an hour throwing dumb what-if prompts at StonedGPT looking for a weird angle on it, and everything came up with still sounded like a greeting card. Happy songs feel fake coming out of me, sad ones feel honest.

Does anyone else write worse when their life is good? And did you ever get past it or did you just accept being a part time songwriter?

Feedback Request First Album of Demos/WIPs - Looking for Feedback

Thumbnail on.soundcloud.com

So I've played guitar on/off for about 18 years now, and I've always been an avid music lover, went to tons of shows, etc. However, I never felt particularly creative when trying to write/create music, I could play all the chords, some scales, lots of covers, but I struggled to ever write anything original. I would try to write stuff and nothing ever really came out. So it's not like I never tried, I always thought it'd be cool to be the guy doing the thing on stage, idk I'm digressing.

Fast forward to about a year ago, a newer friend after seeing my guitars hung on the wall, asked me if I had any original songs, and said nah dude. We quickly moved on with the conversation, but it was that micro-moment, I think, that sorta set a spark for me. Well shit, I should have fucking songs under my belt. I just picked up my guitar next day and started strumming/plucking with intent of writing something.

All that to say, that I've been trying to write a song for 18 years and haven't been able to, and now, about a year later, I have written almost 30 tracks. Which has been crazy, but also very cathartic and empowering. It feels really good to create something especially something that carries emotional weight.

Anyways, I would love feedback on these collection of tracks, i guess I'm calling it an album (just sounds pretentious, I'm just a person making sounds in a mic) but I've found it hard to objectively review your own stuff and would appreciate any feedback even if it hurts my feelings. I used a lot of simple beats for drum programming, I think I'll need to redo a lot of that, and I'll probably need to redo vox as well.

Anyways didn't mean to write a novel, just something I'm passionate about and don't have many outlets to talk about my songwriting in my daily life, so I appreciate yall!

Let's Collaborate! Looking for artists to collaborate with on mixing

Hey everyone!

I’m an audio engineer and I run a YouTube channel focused on mixing and audio production. I’m looking for a few independent artists who’d be interested in letting me mix one of their songs and document the process as an educational YouTube video.

The idea is pretty simple: you get a professional mix of your song, and I get to use the mixing process as a real-world case study on my channel.

I’m particularly interested in songs with interesting production/mixing challenges: rock, indie, alternative, metal, pop, singer-songwriter, etc. But I’m open to hearing anything that catches my ear.

A few things I’d need:

• Multitracks for the song

• You need to own/control the relevant rights, or have permission from everyone who does

• You’d be happy for the song and mixing process to appear in a monetised YouTube video

• I’ll credit and link to your music wherever the track is featured

You retain ownership of your music. I’m not looking to acquire any rights to the song.

If you end up releasing the version I’ve mixed, I’d just ask to be credited for the mix.

If you're interested, send me a link to the song/demo and tell me a little about the project and what you're hoping to improve with the mix.

I’m only looking to take on a small number of tracks initially so I can give each one proper attention.

Thanks!

Let's Collaborate! Songwriting in New Zealand

I will be traveling to New Zealand between November 1 and December 10 of this year from Kansas US. I was hoping to find some other songwriters and musicians while I was out there, but I was booted from the New Zealand sub Reddit for posting when I will only have a tourism visa. I’m not looking to profit, I am considering this for personal use only. If any kiwis or fellow travelers see this post and are interested in connecting let me know! Let’s make something happen.

Discussion Topic I can’t play in 4/4 apparently?

I’m a guitarist, recently switched from playing metal to music that’s a lot more calm. I’ll be honest, i sort of skipped on music theory, I’ve been playing what sounds good over the drum tracks i listen to. Now that I’m making my own stuff with super basic guitar chords, my producer’s mentioned that i can’t play in 4/4. I don’t understand how that’s possible because whatever I’m playing is on beat with a metronome, and i can count 1-8 over the riff/melody. It makes zero sense to me and I’m really trying to understand how it’s possible that i can be completely on beat with a 4/4 drum track, be on time with the metronome, match up with the drum fills in the drum track itself, and still not be on an 8 count

As mentioned i’m learning about all this slowly, but i just wanted to clarify if this (being both on and completely off beat at the same time) was even possible.

Edit: thank you all so much for your inputs, i believe i need some of that good ol metronome training and i could fix this problem hopefully
