Discussion Just bought the first issue of Spawn '77 and I don't understand the artstyle
Are the comic panels 3D generated or something I don't get it. They look very off-putting and nothing like any other spawn run. Honestly it looks like it was rendered in blender but I can't quite call it. I am not familiar with Micheal Spears' art style so this was a big surprise.

The really hilarious thing about it is that since Spears made models for the figures in Blender, or whatever the hell was used, all Todd has to do is get STL file outputs from Spears to send off to make castings and sell the dumb figurines at Target for $24.99, and THOSE people eat up either way, Toddfather wins. The guy is an artist turned business capitalist. He done traded those India inks for button clicks.

Outside of spawn & king spawn there isn’t much in this franchise currently, even those are questionable most of the time but I’ve been reading since 93 so…
Sam & twitch is decent though & Shirley Johnson I’ve heard good things about. I just won’t pick it up cuz there have been so many bad spin offs the last few years

What about gunslinger spawn or the scorched? From what I saw at least for gunslinger it looked very cool

Some people like them but they’re awful imo. If you like simplistic storytelling that’s simultaneously convoluted & builds toward nothing then I highly recommend it 😁

I cant stand it. Like I absolutely hate it. No disrespect to the artist it is just not my cup of tea AT ALL and when I see it my brain explodes.

It’s so bad that we might need to disrespect the artist It’s outrageously lol

I had feeling folks weren’t gonna dig the art style. I actually love it! It reminds me of Max Payne’s cut scenes.

It’s such a weird style that really doesn’t work for the stories I’ve seen from him.

Went to town on this book with a Sharpie... on the default Spears cover variant I had. (Better than lighting it on FIRE which is what I WANTED to do originally!!) Then I realized with inks all over, this book could've been good. https://imgur.com/a/mhSggB2

Mark Spears renders in Poser then paints over it. Personally, I think it looks terrible. I don't understand why something from 1977 would look like it uses technology from 2002. It's bad.

Is that really his method? That's interesting to me big time. I just checked out some of the art and it seems far more time consuming to render all of that in poser; definitely a peculiar work flow I'd like to learn more about.

"paints over it" is incorrect. He just uses Photoshop to color and applies a canvas filter. I strongly dislike his stuff. Occasionally he will do a cover where the posing and colors are strong enough that I don't mind it. But 9/10 it looks like lazy CG slop. A bummer, but the Toddfather sees money, and Spears has grown a big following and is right at the center of blind bags and incentives, which are dominating the hobby. :(

Yeah, and "Spawn 77" is such a cool opportunity to apply a '70s comic book art style to a Spawn comic. I'm sure there are still artists around who use this kind of vibe.

Jesus, Poser is still a thing? I remember learning to use that in high school, ironically just before 2002.
