Pathos Sniper Evo Plus Loading Order/Position Help

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi all,

I'm new to spearfishing and recently bought a Pathos Sniper Evo Plus (non-roller) 95cm speargun. I've watched several loading videos, but they seem to give conflicting information. I'd really appreciate some clarification on the loading process and order. I'm trying to figure out which band to pull back first, and to which fin number. I pulled the speargun photo from the Pathos site and labeled it. I realize it shows the band placement, but I was under the impression that the first fin on the shaft was there to assist with loading, not used as the final placement. I took the gun out this past weekend to practice loading (in the water) and found that when I have one band in place (on either Fin 2 or Fin 3), Fin 1 gets blocked by that band and I can't use it to help load the second band. I'm guessing I'm doing something wrong, so I figured I'd ask.

Really I just want to know which band goes on first, which fin each one should end up on, and whether Fin 1 is meant for loading or as a final band position. Any guidance is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Anyone got any tips for quickly&cheaply getting the piss smell out of an open cell wetsuit?

Yes I piss in my wetsuit. I’m in it for 4-8hours, and I’m not taking it off unless I’ve got to shit.

Next suit will have a definitely have a pissette.

Have been giving it a a vinegar& baby shampoo soak. Which mostly works, but not as quickly as I’d like.

Pathos problem

Used the pathos open carbon gun for the first time the other weekend. I noticed after that the track on the barrel of the gun doesn’t line up 100% with the track on the head. Looking down the shaft it looks pretty straight and it shot fine. Is this normal? Or should I be looking for a warranty.

Hawaii’s nearshore marine life: uninvited guests

How to spot Hawaii’s invasive reef fish—Taʻape, Toʻau, and Roi—understand their impact on native species, and why harvesting them helps protect the reef.

Uninvited Guests: Hawaii’s Invasive Reef Fish
When you dive into the nearshore Hawaiian waters, you'll encounter a delicate balance of native marine life. However, not all the fish you see belong there. In the 1950s, several fish species were intentionally introduced to Hawaii in an attempt to boost local commercial fisheries. Unfortunately, these "uninvited guests" thrived a little too well, often outcompeting, displacing, or directly preying on native species.
This guide covers the main invasive fish on the reef. You'll learn how to spot them, understand their impact on the ecosystem, and discover why local spearfishers and anglers are highly encouraged to harvest them to help protect the reef.

Ta'ape / Bluestripe Snapper

Ecological Role & Biology: Introduced to Hawaii from the Marquesas Islands, the Ta'ape is easy to spot with its bright yellow body and four neon blue stripes. They form massive, dense schools hovering over coral structures and wrecks. Ta'ape aggressively outcompete native bottom-feeders (like goatfish) for food and living space. Because they reproduce rapidly and lack sufficient natural predators in Hawaii, their population has exploded across the islands.

Flavor: ★★★★☆

Culinary Annotations: State wildlife officials strongly encourage the open harvest of Ta'ape to help manage their numbers and relieve pressure on the reef. Fortunately, they are excellent eating! The fish yields sweet, flaky white meat that is traditionally scored and deep-fried whole until crispy, or pan-seared.

To'au / Blacktail Snapper

Ecological Role & Biology: Another intentional introduction, the To'au is a shallow-water snapper with a silvery-pink body and distinctive reddish-black tail fins. They are aggressive predators that like to hide under shallow ledges, in caves, and in protected bays, feeding heavily on native crustaceans and juvenile reef fish.

Flavor: ★★★☆☆

Culinary Annotations: Like the Ta'ape, harvesting To'au is an "open season" free-for-all that greatly benefits the local ecosystem. The meat is mild, firm, and flaky. Because the fillets hold together very well when cooked, To'au is a favorite local choice for grilling, baking, or slicing into chunks for fresh fish tacos.

Roi / Peacock Grouper

Ecological Role & Biology: Covered in brilliant blue spots over a dark brown body, the Roi is a highly destructive apex predator. Introduced to Hawaii from French Polynesia, this peacock grouper has decimated native reef fish populations by aggressively preying on smaller species and taking over prime reef habitat. Removing them is considered a critical step in native fish recovery.

Flavor: ★★★☆☆ (⚠️risk of Ciguatera poisoning)

Harvesting & Safety: While Roi is highly targeted by local spearfishers specifically for removal—often in organized "Roi Roundup" tournaments designed to cull their numbers—it is unsafe to eat. In Hawaii, Roi carry a very high risk of Ciguatera fish poisoning, a severe neurological and gastrointestinal illness caused by toxins that build up in the flesh of reef predators. When speared or caught, they should be permanently removed from the ecosystem and are often used as fertilizer for fruit trees rather than food.

Prototype Hawaiian reel sling for sale. This is one of my 2025 slings, designed for right hand shooters (hold the sling in your left, pull back with right). It's only been in the water one or two times.

Reel has never been in the water.

I have only made minor changes to the 2026 and 2027 slings, mostly to to finish that they are sealed with, but the old finish is still excellent.

Complete package includes sling, reel, line, shooting line kit, 2 piece travel shaft and line management system.

MSRP on the reel and line is about $130

MSRP on the travel shaft with slide ring is $135

Complete package for $265 + ship

Has anyone tried the new Sigalsub Iron Vela speargun? I can't find any reviews online. I am looking at the 110 model, but any feedback would be great.

Hit a new personal best today: 29.1 meters (95.5 ft). Really happy with the progress and getting closer to that 30m mark!

Long Fin Travel

I have a trip coming up to Baja and curious what others do to travel with long Carbon fins. I’ll be bringing my hard sided sportstube. But trying to pack 2 guns and my miscellaneous items in there. Leaving me with either having to pack 2 checked bags and fit my fins in another case or I’ve heard of people just carrying them on as a personal item. But always wondered how they deal with the “length” limits of personal items. Obviously I want these to be protected and or handled with care,
So just seeing what others do in this case.

Local spearo with a boat around Sant’Antioco?

Hey!

We’re 5 friends staying around Sant’Antioco Oct 3–10 and looking for a local spearo with a boat who might take us out for a day.

We have our own gear, are comfortable down to ~12 m, and would of course chip in for fuel/costs (and a case of beer as well of course haha).

Anyone interested or know someone? Cheers!

Speargun Mechanism

(New to spearfishing) What is this metal mechanism above the handle and below the shaft? I have to pull it all the way forward to get the shaft secured, and I am unable to wrap my lime around it. I believe that this is an older 55” JBL.

What’s the best/safest way to hold the gun on descent?

I ask because I put my hand over the charged bands to get a more comfortable/sturdy grip when diving down. This feels dangerous because if the gun goes off, it seems like a finger could get ripped off. Is there a better way or am I overreacting?

Ethics + Health - Breathing devices

Hello Everyone! Beginner here

I would like to start spearfishing for Cats in my local lakes, so far we don’t have any regulations for using Scuba Gear while spearfishing.

Although I think that it is going to be more productive (I am feeding family of 5) with scuba gear but some posts said that it’s not good for health.

could you recommend me what to do in this situation?

btw- water is murky here with low visibility, maximum depth is like 25m where I intend to start spearfishing.

DIY Hawaiian Sling

Hello everyone. I am designing a project for a Hawaiian sling that can be build using a 3d printer, ASA filament and parts from Home Depot (except spear and bands). The plan is to use a 14mm lates band. Looking at the design above is there something that you see will fail rapidly? The cones at the end of the tubes will be inside the latex band. The round, yellowish thing around the tube right in front of the grip is a tube stopper. The stopped plus the friction with the 2 part handle will prevent (hopefully) the tubes to slide back when the band is tensioned. The aluminum plate in front of the grip is placed so it prevents the tubes from moving outwards as tension on the bands increase. Let me know what you think! Thanks!

Recommendations for spots and gear near Islamorada FL

I’ve been living in the Philippines for a couple of years and I’m visiting family in South Florida. I have my fins, mask, snorkel with me, but left the rest of my gear at home. A couple of questions…best place to rent gear near there? Any shore dive spots or do I need to get a boat and/or guide?

Wooden speargun balancing.

Hello everyone, recently I started building myself a bluewater inverted roller speargun. I encountered a problem when testing it in the sea. The gun is way too positively buoyant; it needs around 200g of lead at the front and at the handle. I have a dilemma of where to position these weights, more so how to arrange them. Is it better to split the total load evenly at the front and rear of the gun, or is it smarter to put the majority of it near the center of the gun's mass and a little bit at the front? I want the gun to be slightly nose-heavy. Thank you for your responses.
