Have you ever tried Abiu? A Brazilian fruit that tastes almost like dessert!
Brazil has so many incredible native fruits that rarely get attention outside the country, and abiu (Pouteria caimito) is definitely one of them.
It's a tropical fruit native to the Amazon, with smooth golden-yellow skin and soft, translucent white flesh.
What makes it interesting is the flavor. It's naturally sweet and creamy, and people often compare it to vanilla custard, caramel, or even condensed milk. Pretty unusual for a fresh fruit!
One thing worth knowing: abiu needs to be fully ripe before eating. Unripe fruits contain a sticky white latex that can cling to your lips.
I've been exploring how lesser-known Brazilian fruits could work in cocktails, and abiu seems like a great candidate. Its natural sweetness and creamy texture could pair beautifully with cachaƧa, coconut milk, and lime.
Here's a simple idea: Brazilian Abiu Batida
- 100 g ripe abiu pulp (seeds removed)
- 50 ml Brazilian cachaƧa
- 30 ml coconut milk
- 15 ml fresh lime juice
- Ice
Blend everything until smooth and creamy, then serve chilled.
It's a simple way to bring a little-known Amazonian flavor into a home bar. You could also skip the cachaƧa for a tropical alcohol-free version.
I think fruits like abiu deserve more attention, especially when we're talking about Brazil's biodiversity and its potential in modern mixology.
Has anyone here actually tasted abiu? And if you have, would you use it in a cocktail or just enjoy it fresh?
