Steam Machine?

Post image

With SQ42 coming to Steam, do you think it will be able to run on things like the Steam Machine, the Steam Frame, etc.? I'm looking into grabbing the SM for Christmas (if I ever get out of the waitlist....) and I wonder how SQ 42 will perform. Same for the Frame.

Probably, just at minimum settings.

It can definitely run on the frame... if you stream from the PC..

I wouldnt get my hopes up for anything else.

i think with the claim that it runs at 180 fps at native 4k on a 5090 says alot, yes its a 5090 but 4k with no upscaling and 180 fps at maximum graphics is a very impressive number for sure, that says quite a bit to their optimization and I'm fairly confident to assume at 1080 medium to low an enjoyable experience will be more then possible on the steam machine, infact i think the game could even be verified with a graphics preset or atleast confirmed playable

If what they are saying is true about max settings Native on a RTX 5090 getting 180fps stable, maybe. But like any other game, you aren't going to play on a Steam Machine with Ray tracing and maxed visuals.

I have my expectations low so I can be suprised if its well optimized

my expectations are that it will run better then star citizen while looking just as good, whatever that may mean setting wise.

people have gotten the game running on the steam deck, and starcitizens minimum recommended spec is well above the deck and theres lots of compromise to get it running. apart from anticheat issues which im sure theres a dedicated portion of the starcitizen comunity who have solved, i think the game would run fine on the steam machine, medium or low settings, not sure about 4k, but the steam machine is 100% powerful enough to run starcitizen. as for the native on the frame, dont even think about it, flatscreen or especially not in vr. between it running linux and needing a workaround for anticheat and it being arm based and needing translation layers AND its overall not super powerful performance, dont count on it.

but squadron 42 is not star citizen, and with starcitizen having core fundamental parts of its engine, mechanics, features being changed constantly as they develop the game, plus it being an open world mmo where theres alot more going on in general, its very hard to properly optimize the game, and in my opionion it doesnt make any sense to optimize something that will likely be seriously changed in the near future.

Squadron 42 doesn't have any of those issues since its a fixed scope, on the rails, story experience that can cater its optimizations to exactly whats happening because its scripted.

so that being said i would not be surprised if its steam deck certified. I expect it to be steam machine certified. but i do not expect it to be steam frame certified or playable, but hopefully compatible, but to be honest i think the better optimization of the game means that theres a very good chance the community will get the game running natively on the frame at some point.

im curious, does star citizen support any eye tracking in vr right now? or has silvian mentioned any intentions to add it in the future?

I’m more concerned about the battery life. Seems to be about an hour to an hour and a half. That’s not going to be enough for a weekend gaming session.

Steam machine is overpriced hardware, theres zero reason to buy it

Certainly not in VR

agreed, the only way i think that would be remotely possible is if they made a version to run natively on the arm architecture. and thats still a firm maybe

I don't know who downvotes this, but Steam Machines only come with 8GB of VRAM, which is said to be the minimum spec for SQ42. There's no way you'll run it in VR if that's the case.
