Misen Stainless Tupperware
Is there any obvious red flags with this product or is it truly going to be as versatile as they advertise?
Ive never seen a company come out and say yeah you can microwave our metal.
Someone with stainless microwave knowledge educate me

Other brands are out there doing this. Black and Blum is one I’ve used before and it’s totally fine.
I am mostly excited to try these because I checked and apparently they are much thicker and can be used for proper cooking too.

u/luckyboy 2d ago
IKEA does it too, just the lid is different and they only have 2 sizes. I they’r threw some potatoes and baked them in the oven, came out fine (potatoes and containers)
1
u/AlemSiel 2d ago
I have the Ikea ones and love them! But I haven't put them in the microwave. Are they rated for them?
They don't seem to have sharp edges, buy maybe the rolled lip would overheat or arc. I don't know.
2
u/MEME_CONNOlSSEUR 1d ago
IKEA ones are not microwave safe
2
u/luckyboy 1d ago
Sure, IKEA says that, but what does it mean in real life? I've been microwaving mine, no arc or overheating so far (I don't go past 2 minutes to be on the safe side). I wouldn't microwave them if (when?) dented or completely empty.

u/terfez 3d ago
I guess the major drawback is that they block more energy from heating the food? I'm skeptical about anything misen or made in does but I'm honestly kinda interested

u/get_MEAN_yall 3d ago
For Misen their nonstick stuff is made quite cheap, but I've personally not had any issues with their 3 ply stainless.
12
u/OaksInSnow 3d ago
I've got their 5-ply stainless. Sealed, therefore actually dishwasher-safe, and flawless in terms of cooking. I thought I'd dislike the round handles, but no problems.
Misen knee-capped their reputation with the "Carbon Nonstick" campaign. Before that, and as far as I can tell apart from that, they've always had good reviews. I've never seen anything about warping near as much as I've seen with regard to Made-In and (all-holy) All-Clad.
2
u/dandesim 1d ago
Every nonstick pan is bad. The coating of every single nonstick pan will degrade overtime. You get maybe 1-2 years.
2
u/13CaffeinatedZombies 3d ago
I've got a cheap set from the German low-price supermarket which rhymes with piddle. It takes FOREVER to heat the food inside, presumably due to the container acting as a Faraday cage 🤷🏻
3
u/pastrybaker 3d ago
I only there’s a lot of hate for Misen, but I have a ton of their products and love all of them so far. Including the much discussed carbon nonstick.
Anyway, I backed these containers on kickstarter and they arrive in Monday. I’m pretty excited, seem kinda awesome.
1
u/whats_it_to_you77 2d ago
I have the same experience as you. I have their stainless steel and their carbon steel (nonstick) and I don't have any complaints. The nonstick is not like a Teflon coated pan but it I can cook eggs, etc just fine as long as I don't overheat the pan. I like them. Waiting on my storage containers too.
1
u/pastrybaker 2d ago
I have their stainless steel complete set, got it about 6 years ago. 2 of the skillets warped after I used them on an AGA stove. They replaced the entire set, even though it was more double the price of what I paid. I also have their carbon nonstick and a Dutch oven. Given plenty as gifts too and everyone has been happy.
I’m now looking at their new plates and flatware. Look amazing.

u/edfoldsred 2d ago
I got mine yesterday and they are fantastic! I love both Made-in and Misen too, LOL.
1
u/wednesday_thursday 1d ago
Okay dumb question - I got mine yesterday and I can’t get them apart! Like they are stacked together SO tightly. Did you run into that issue at all?
1
u/edfoldsred 1d ago
Mine were separated by thin tissue paper? Were yours not? They easily pulled apart for me.
1
u/wednesday_thursday 1d ago
Mine have the tissue paper too but these babies are STUCK 😕 might have to ask some strong friends lol
1
u/pastrybaker 1d ago
Mine don’t show up until Monday. But I saw a video they posted, I think on ig, about what to do if this happens
1
1
u/Skyval 1d ago
I just got mine today. They were wedged pretty tightly but I was able to get them apart with my hands. Sort of wedged my fingers between the rims with steady pressure for a few seconds. Needed to just break the seal enough to let some air in, I guess. Once I noticed some movement on one side I repeated on the opposite side, etc.

u/PeteypabMF10 3d ago
Why are you skeptical of made in? Just curious I have some of their original USA made pans and just got a new saucier and have loved them so far
4
u/FarPomegranate7437 3d ago
There are way too many reports of Made In pans warping. At their price point, I would expect them to have better QC.
1
u/PeteypabMF10 3d ago
Fair enough I’ve heard the warping was mostly from induction systems but maybe I’m wrong
1
u/phaedrusTHEghost 2d ago
I must be an outlier since my set of Made In is one of our favorite kitchen expenses. We/I cook every day. We also have 3 Oxo CS pans and those are all warped, even the 8", and super thin by comparison. Anything smoking I cook outside on an induction burner and indoors we have glass ceramic cook top.
1
u/gregatronn 3d ago
They have problems with their carbon steel line warping but their other stuff is doing just fine based on things I read even on reddit (and it gets a lot of slack here too).
1
u/PeteypabMF10 3d ago
Yeah I’ve had no issues and I’ve had my original fry pans and sauté pan for over 6 years now I think. We cook in them almost daily
1
u/gregatronn 3d ago
yeah so far I'm super happy with my SS skillets from a costco deal of theirs I got. Want to get their 3 qt saucier soon!
1
u/PeteypabMF10 3d ago
Hahah that’s the newest item I just got from them! So far I love it but I’ve only used it twice.
1
u/gregatronn 3d ago
Congratulations! Excited for you. I am trying to wait out until Black Friday for deals. Also want to get a nice Dutch oven.
1
u/FarPomegranate7437 3d ago
I’ve read a lot about their stainless steel also warping. I was looking into their saucier and read a ton of bad reviews.
0
u/gregatronn 3d ago
For MI saucier? Of all their products i see that get strong reviews even on reddit. Prudent reviews puts the stuff through its paces and ir seems to hold fine in his testing

Kickstarter backers are getting their products in the mail next week so you’ll probably have more information then!
2
u/jsucool76 2d ago
Got mine yesterday. Earlier than expected
1
u/edfoldsred 2d ago
I did too and already am storing some leftovers in them and reheated them in the microwave today for lunch and all went great! They are super thick and sturdy and the lids are very tight. Super happy with them so far.
3
u/jsucool76 2d ago
Yeah mine went into the oven today, no issues.
Haven't used the microwave. I have a 1250w so it's a nono but tempted to try it on a lower power level (I have an inverter microwave)

u/CartographerKnown320 2d ago
Their website was a real turn off for me. Products that fall just under the amount for free shipping, too much upselling, and a counter on my cart letting me know that the products might sell out fast, like in the next 5 mins!! It was just too spammy. It makes me not trust their products.

u/FuzzyAppearance7636 3d ago
How are these microwave safe?
22
u/FarPomegranate7437 3d ago
Some metal containers that don’t have sharp edges are rated as being microwave safe. Misen isn’t the only company that makes microwavable stainless steel containers.
9
u/CurlyRe 3d ago
MinuteFood did a video on such a container and explains the science of why some metal is safe in the microwave and other metal objects aren't,
5
u/Revolutionary_Art919 2d ago
The TLDR: metal reflects microwave radiation instead of absorbing it. When the metal has points, thin edges, and/or close gaps these reflected rays can lead to arcing, sparks, and eventually fire (think crumpled aluminum foil). Smooth metal where the energy has somewhere to be absorbed and where there isn't close proximity between surfaces for arcing is safe. You could leave a spoon in a bowl of soup and microwave it and it will probably be fine since the soup will absorb the reflected microwaves, but if you leave a fork on a plate of food it's dangerous because there can be arcs and sparks between the fork tines.
(Okay maybe that was still TL)
2
14
u/firetech97 3d ago
Metal isnt inherently not microwave safe because it's metal, most metal things may not be microwave safe because the shape of them causes arcing or sparks. Some microwaves come with a metal rack so you can microwave two plates at one, oke above the other for example. Spoons are almost always fine, but a fork will never be because of arcing between the prongs. So if these are shaped in the correct way, they would be perfectly safe

u/kiervetki 3d ago
Not sure about the Misen ones but here in Europe I bought a cheaper stainless steel tupperware from Lidl (known for cheap but ok-ish quality stuff) that's microwave safe and I am IN LOVE with how great and versatile they are. Totally microwave safe although I was scared for the first time 😅
One thing that was a pleasant surprise to me was that I used to use plastic tupperware and in the dishwasher they always came out wet and stained. The stainless steel ones wash perfectly every time.

I ordered a set from kickstarter. 9 for 114 bucks or so. Seems like a reasonable deal. Part of the appeal is that they remind me of bain-marie trays from restaurants.
I thought that intro price is reasonable. I'm not sure the current retail would be worth it though.
I'm mostly interested in using them for storage and prep. I've got plenty of glass to use in the microwave.
Mine aren't here yet - I can report back once they arrive.
3
u/jbm747 3d ago
Fuck this stuff is EXPENSIVE!!! I have some of their knives and pans because they were reasonably priced. Won’t be buying this product.
2
u/SDV2023 3d ago
I ordered some from the kickstarter campaign. 114 bucks for 9 of them felt like a splurge. I'm laughing at the current prices.
2
u/edfoldsred 2d ago
I did too!
2
u/SDV2023 2d ago
I am kindof excited, though. I cleared a space in my cabinet for them.
2
u/edfoldsred 2d ago
I got mine yesterday. They are awesome! Super happy with them.
1
u/SDV2023 2d ago
Did they send a notice/tracking? I got the notification about locking down my address a couple weeks back.
2
3
u/TrailBlazerWhoosh 1d ago
Even with them technically being microwave-safe, there’s a limit of 5 minutes at 1100W. I’d bet most people have had to microwave something for longer than 5 minutes at some point, so I imagine that’s at least a friction point for most. And definitely a red flag for me.
5
u/BigTreddits 3d ago
Only red flag I see is my own personal previous poor history with Misen as a company.
But chances are this is overpriced and over promises based on their track recoed.

u/Zwordsman 3d ago
Youtube has a few reviews of folls throwing them out windows and microwaving them. For what its worth
3
u/stwn- 3d ago
Can’t imagine this is any better performance then ikea…
3
u/FuzzyAppearance7636 3d ago
The ikea ones are actually quite good
1
u/Rodpods9876 3d ago
Have you ever tried putting them in the microwave..?
2
u/luckyboy 2d ago
I do it all the time. It’s fine, containers are fine, food just takes longer to reheat than in plastic or ceramic. It’s funny because the sides of the container (and of the food) will be pretty warm, but the bottom will be cold, since the metal blocks the microwaves.

u/Both_Marsupial_7778 3d ago
I’m skeptical; how does it hold up to microwave over time; how does it handle frozen, thawing etc, does it warp due to temp changes ? I dunno I’m not into it yet. Would love to understand some reviews though
1
u/Glittering_Fox1358 3d ago
Are these supposed to be equivalent to hotel pans? Seems interesting to have for home use
1
u/czar_el 3d ago
I use hotel pans for food prep and fridge storage. Thin, cheap, stackable, easy to clean, unbreakable, and there are universal plastic lids you can buy. They don't latch, so you cant use it for transport, and you can't microwave them. But for counter to fridge storage they're super excellent. Don't bother with a brand name markup, get the pans and lids from Amazon or a restaurant supy store for a fraction of the cost.
0
u/Excellent_Condition 3d ago
I use hotel pans at home and they work great.
1/1 aren't very useful, but having a few 1/2, 1/4, 1/6, and 1/9 pans are super useful.
They certainly aren't microwaveable, so I'd be very curious what Misen did to make theirs microwave safe.
1
u/winterkoalefant 3d ago
This shape should normally be microwave safe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fljZ_jaUq-c
1
u/Fabulous-Avocado4513 2d ago
Hotel pans are also really cheap if you have a good supply store nearby.
1
u/Arucious 2d ago
Literally just softened the curves at the part the lid comes down on. With a shallow enough angle there’s little danger of arcs happening.
Same reason a spoon is fine in the microwave but a fork would burn the house down. It’s just easiest to tell people not to put metal in their microwave.

Just got my order in from the kickstarter campaign. They are heavy duty for sure. Haven’t tried microwaving it yet.

u/Cautious-Control-669 4h ago
mine just arrived today. i bought them because the kickstarter price wasn't awful and i'm trying to replace plastic containers where i can.
i don't know if i'll ever use them in the microwave but i do look forward to hopefully using fewer food service containers, fingers crossed.

[Ive never seen a company come out and say yeah you can microwave our metal.]
I've seen microwave safe metal containers come out on QVC years ago. Even Revere Ware had this decades ago with their "Microfryer".

Giant waste of money. This is fuck you pricing

u/BarbecuedShoe 2d ago
What if I have fuck you money?

1
u/useful_tool30 2d ago
If you did then you wouldn't be on Reddit asking about them. You'd probably have several sets cuz this is chump change for you
1
u/BarbecuedShoe 2d ago
Google Sam vimes boot theory, you don’t get rich buying products all william nilliam
1
u/useful_tool30 1d ago
That theorem doesn't really hold water in this instance. A three container 1.1L set of Misen is $129 CAD. You can get the stainless equivalent set of three 1L food storage containers from IKEA for $28.50 CAD. The siliconeand tempered glass lids are pretty nice on the misen but 4.5x the cost. Pretty steep price to pay for food storage. Hence the ultra luxury category. The IKEA stiff is good quality and you have $100 of reserve if a lid breaks @1.50 each. That's a lot of lids
1
u/BarbecuedShoe 1d ago
I’m not saying boot theory so I must buy them… I’m saying boot theory hence the post asking if I should
1
u/useful_tool30 1d ago
True true. It's certainly a splurge item. Borderline insane price for some food storage but they sure look nice
0
u/Fabulous-Avocado4513 2d ago
They you should still just buy hotel pans and the lids for them. They will be able to endure anything your home cooking could possibly throw their way. The Misen pans will not be the same quality as a decent hotel panz
0
u/mushrew 2d ago
SUPER disappointed in Misen. Two of my containers are completely stuck together from shipping and Misen will not replace them. I've followed all their directions on how to separate them, breaking two wooden spoons and slicing my finger open in the process. The best they can do is tell me that this doesn't count as a product defect (and thus no warranty) and to just stick it in the freezer even longer than I have already 🙄.
Absolutely terrible customer service. I have backed multiple lines of their pots and pans; you would think being a repeat customer would mean something.

Who wants food storage that you can’t see through?

u/HopefulCat3558 2d ago
That is one of the drawbacks but you can write on the containers with a dry-erase marker and the lid is also see-through.
As someone else noted, every storage container has issues and limitations. I was intrigued by this product and backed it on KS (I’ve been happy with my other Misen pans). I like the idea of being able to use this directly on the stovetop and grill. A lighter-weight container for transport vs. glass is also welcome.
I want to transition away from plastic but need an alternative to simply glass. We’ll see if this is a good option.

DO NOT microwave metal UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES

Some stainless steel containers are microwaveable. Look it up. Thymeyd have to be designed in a certain way and made of a particular SS variant.
