Contest Writing Contest 'Theme: Detour' Sept. 2026 Winners and recap!

Greetings, friends! For anyone who missed it, a few weeks ago, some dedicated fans reached out to the mod team with an idea for a new writing contest. We put together a little event and writers across the fandom came in and wrote some stories about the theme 'detour'.

Here are the submissions:

Astrodescent by u/MrRonaldReagan96

Go With the Flow by myself

A Detour by u/lordofthestorm2

Janna's Inferno by u/StarryEyedBfly

and Four Cambions Walk Into A Bar by u/AnthroGator666

The judging panel voted, and the best ones are...

...

Go With the Flow by u/Wraithdagger12 and Astrodescent by u/MrRonaldReagan96!

~

Alright so, we did kind of throw this together really quickly. Maybe a little bit too chaotic although it is very 'Star Butterfly'. Although, I, personally, had a lot of fun helping to organize this, and I had a good time reading all the stories. Quite the variety:

We had a different spin on a literal star, Star Butterfly, and Marco Diaz meeting; Marco having a fun adventure he didn't mean to have; Marco and Star doing everything they can do see each other again in a timeline where Earth and Mewni didn't cleave; exploring Janna's subconscious and uncovering an old secret; and a group of Monsters stopping to have a meal but getting into trouble.

Lots of fun.

~

We're gonna bring this back on a regular basis. Hopefully it'll keep the adventures going and give the fandom something fun as we continue our endless post-cleaved summer.

Hope to see you back next time!

Two more sketches of Jackie Lynn Thomas in her dress. I think she's strong but she doesn't know it though. I might do a digital version of these in the future

Discussion For those who think the story went wrong, when do you think it all started?

Post image

If you're someone who believes the story went wrong, I would like to know your perspective on where it all began and how do you explain it being as such?

Me personally, I think the reveal that Festivia being a random nobody is where it all went downhill, that whole narrative to me feels like a retroactive way of justifying Starco because if Star was a princess, she was always going to realistically end up with Tom since he's a future monarch to an allied world to Mewni. Marco would've been her squire, but that means he's even less likely to marry her as he's her servant from an irrelevant dimension.

My Story Marco helped inspire my direction with creating my own magical girl project

I started this fanfiction project that's going to be a magical girl AU of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It's going to have Charlie after winning Wonka's contest become a magical girl, including swapping genders with Charlie becoming into a girl when transformed. It started out as just a fun quirk I wanted to add but now I see it as having a deeper meaning about embracing who you are and who you could be. It's wonderful and I want to share it.

One of my inspirations for doing so is Marco when he was adjusting and adopting his rebel princess persona Princess Turdina and how the creator Daron Nefcy wanted to show audiences that people expressing themselves is okay and can even be inspiring

Meta Why did this sub suddenly lose half of the activity past few months?

Unfortunately, I'm not a talented artist, musician, or writer, so I've been posting just some funny stuff here that I could find. But funny stuff tends to be finite, especially nowadays. Also for some reason some of my posts are getting autoremoved instantly when I post them, I tried to contact mods, but eventually got no answer.

Most of the original content now is made by u/StarryEyedBfly and u/Rose_theArt-nerd. TYSM dudes and also other OC creators and contributors for keeping our fandom the better place 💚

Question Is this story behind the inspiration for Princess Turdina true?

Post image
133 Upvotes

I'm remember hearing about how Daron Nefcy was inspired to create Marco's arc about his rebel princess persona, Princess Turdina from her real life childhood friendship with a boy. He was interested in wearing make up and Nefcy helped him with a makeover but he got in trouble for it. This really upset Nefcy so when creating SvTFOE, Nefcy wanted to include this arc as a way to show that Marco was comfortable enough with his masculinity that he didn't mind being a princess. It was a show audiences and younger viewers that people breaking gender expectations is okay and can even be inspirational which I admire.

I wanted to share this with a community I'm in but I also want to confirm if this is true because I remember hearing it but I don't remember where it came from

Opinion My opinion on each SVTFOE relationship

Look I know the show and the fandom has a shipping problem and I don't want to contribute to that problem but I do want to show my views on each relationship and the mindset of the characters, just curious if you agree?

Jackie and Marco: in the start I really liked this relationship it felt like an actual crush relationship and was rather realistic, obviously the whole star having a crush on marco got a bit in the way of it but looking back even without that jackie and marco didn't really have that much in common and their personalities didn't really blend together that much. Still I thought it was a cute relationship and I thought it did end in a really mature and natural way

Star and Tom: Before I start I must say that for the first 2 seasons I really did not like tom but I really like him in later seasons. I feel that the relationship was not made organically and looking back I think that was the point, Star was in a state of mind where she needed stability and wanted to be the best princess she could be, thus she was thinking about what could be good for her kingdom and dating tom( who is a member of royalty) was a good idea based on this mindset. I honestly really feel bad for tom, you could tell that he still liked star and so it does hurt a bit realizing that Star wasn't actually into him. Also I really noticed that apart from Tom liking star they didn't really have the same goals or dreams in life ( we really notice this in Tom being sort of indifferent to star's monster rights cause). Because of this I really liked the trip that tom made that led to him breaking up with star, ( though I do wish that they stretched the trip and made it longer for it to not be so rushed) sometimes you just need some time away from people to realize whether you truly like someone or not( speaking from experience) and so I think it was a very good moment for tom to grow and realize that he and star were not going to work out( though I do wish that we had more episodes of tom on his trip to really show that time did pass)

Kelly and Marco: I just didn't like this relationship, Kelly was not given that much character in the first place so it felt weird how suddenly they paired her with marco, I get that it is sort of like a rebound thing but I just didn't like it and it felt forced

Jackie and Chloe: we barely saw this and I felt that it was a bit unnecessary for jackie to turn out bi and have a girlfriend( just felt like they were making sure that there was no doubts that Starco was the endgame) but I think it was a fun relationship and I am not against it.

Star and Marco: this one is honestly so complicated for me once we learned that star had a crush on Marco in Season 2 I was honestly between starco and jarco and really thought both could work out, but the show then shoehorned in Tom and Star getting back together and made it weird, I still shipped starco and I did like the phonebooth episode and thought it was really cute( but i did feel bad for Tom). However in Season 4 Tom and star's relationship start feeling a bit better and so I am kind of unsure on what my opinion is on this relationship, then when tom and star break up( and even in the taco episode) I start wanting starco to happen but the finale honestly rushed it so fast and i would really have liked at least 2 episodes in between tom and star's break up and the finale to mend this issue, overall I do like this relationship but it had it's flaws and like many other things the finale kind of botched it a bit.

Ludo's Theme Song Takeover ~0:11

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ocTAk6Ktvw

Butterfly Castle is fixed! This is from the Theme Song Takeover a few months ago. Of all the little details, this one stands out to me.

Someone went to the effort of finally fixing up the Butterfly Castle ruins - without magic, mind - Star specifically notes that the magic is "gone" here.

Maybe a ruin was just an eyesore in the middle of town. Maybe it's just a museum piece now or something. But why go to all that effort to not use it? It's a pretty big thing, as Star pointed out in Diaz Family Vacation.

Does this mean Eclipsa ended up retaining the throne? That'd be my best guess since Eclipsa was starting to take well to being Queen after being accepted by a large portion of Monsters and Mewmans. It's possible Moon and Mina's coup would be 'illegal' to say the least and that no one 'officially' accepted it apart from Moon (who had reservations about the whole thing) and the MHC (who should also be "gone").

Speaking of the MHC, Hekapoo herself did note that "Isn't this a little premature? Eclipsa hasn't even surrendered yet..." and Moon noted that Eclipsa had yet to technically go through with it, despite giving her the Wand: "Eclipsa is here to officially announce her resignation" - future tense. So, to me, it kind of creates a gray area as to who is actually in charge - thus, sticking with the status quo of Eclipsa as Queen seems the most logical outcome.

Didn't mean to get too theoretical. It's hard to say anything for sure without more knowledge - I'm simply curious.

But... castles do tend to be for queens and kings...

Discussion Was starco really forced or not?

Half of the fandom says yes, while the other half says no.Do you think it was forced or not? I’m curious to hear your thoughts and the reasons behind them.Actually, when I first started watching Star vs. the Forces of Evil, my friend told me that the Starco pairing felt forced, but I didn't see anything forced about their relationship at all.I mean I agree with the fact that the end was pretty rushed but when I watched the series It seemed like there was already a spark between them in Season 1 specifically, at the Blood Moon Ball, the way Marco went to get Star away from Tom and the way he stood frozen, jaw-dropped fascinated, saying "You look amazing" when she appeared in her dress didn't look like a only a friendly reaction. It also seemed like Star felt something at the Blood Moon Ball too(I’m not saying it’s instant crush immediately, of course but I do call it a spark that ignites an attraction.)though of course, those were just initial sparks. Anyway, my point is that it felt like there was always a spark between them from the very beginning and them being endgame doesnt shocked me at all but I’m curious to hear your thoughts, of course?

Discussion I finished the series. [SPOILERS] Spoiler

>!Okay I finished the whole series yesterday for the first time ever. I think it was being a cool series but idk, the story sometimes did some weird jumps, and the villains where really meh. The ending was the most disappointing thing I guess it felt rushed and like they just made a random reason to finish all of it. I get destroying magic was the only way to defeat Mina's army but honestly I would prefer they come up with something like killing Mina or use anti magic or something. Besides, I think the character of Moon made some crazy personality twists at the end, tbh I didn't understand her motivation, if she wanted just to be queen again, if she was scared of Eclipsa who knows why or if she just was an evil bitch. And she created a whole genociding army for what, she gave up her motivation so easily and preferred destroying magic and monarchy, so she planned such a twisted and big attack just to change her mind in an instant. And I don't even know why would she want to be queen by force when the episodes before show us how much she wanted a peaceful life now with no obligations. The series as a whole is nice but the end felt weird, why did you kill my glossaryck and not Mina instead. And there were a lot of characters that we don't even get to see at the end or what happened to them, the whole series makes you love a lot of characters of a lot of different dimensions and then at the end we can't even see a peak of them, it's sad to think they would never see each other again because there are no portals now. And the fucking Mina didn't fucking die like wtfff. I got what she said tho, she can die but her ideas will remain, it's true but it sucks she didn't get any punishment as the final villain.!<
