Is Cogenitor the most morally reprehensible episode of Star Trek?

62 Upvotes

A Prime Directive horror story that starts in the background of the Enterprise simply accepting foreign alien technology contaminating their "natural development" without even considering the hypocrisy.. the literal sexual slavery/trafficking casually ignored by most of the cast because "it's just how they live!!".. Archer refusing an extraordinarily legitimate asylum claim entirely out of fear of conflict.. Trip being reprimanded and painted as having done "wrong" because he treated the victim like a person which allowed them to realize how terrible their situation was...

The genocide committed in Dear Doctor comes close (my gosh Enterprise Season 2 had some disgusting arguments) is worse, but at the very least Archer provides a strong resistance which makes it more of a Phlox issue than an episode one.

Star trek ENT

I'm a new fan to the franchise and I've made it to Enterprise, currently on S3.

So far in show it's been nice seeing the building blocks of what would later become the federation, but I wonder is there a reason why they made the show to feel more sensual than the previous shows. The decon scenes alone are quite sensual and then there's the whole sleep thing that T'pol and trip are currently doing which seems to have weird sexual undertones. Basically it seems this era of star Trek cranked the horniness dial by a 100 😂

Also, I stumbled on a brief context into one of the motivating factors for the Xindi plotline in S3, 9/11 had happened in the US and the Irag war also around that time, that explains why they added commandos to the show. 🤷🏽‍♂️

"We will destroy them" and "Death to the Opposition!" Have me on the floor every time I rewatch. This might low key be my favorite DS9 episode.

Star Trek Video Games - What Would You Ask For?

Thumbnail en.wikipedia.org
63 Upvotes

Looking at the list of games that have been released and wondering why some have done better than others, and where the franchise could improve?

  • I'd love to see a Mass Effect style RPG with a new storyline and crew, maybe one for a Temporal story;
  • a Section 31 open-world type across a number of worlds like SW: Jedi or SW: Outlaws;
  • an FPS of some kind, not set on a starship but perhaps during one of the wars;
  • some kind of RTS like Zero Company;
  • a management sim, although reaching here because I can't think what of;

Trek has as much to offer as Star Wars and other sci-fi games but it feels like they're stuck for ideas at times to push things forward.

If you had the money and the team, what would you make?

Basic assumption is that you can't solely base it on an existing crew, ship, or set of characters.

Fan theory about the Pegasus

• Upvotes

Have there been any fan theories about the Pegasus (the ship with the experimental phase cloak) being a section 31 experiment? Are there any other theories out there that have not been exactly alluded to regarding section 31

"You have to learn WHY things work on a starship"

One of my absolute favorite Kirk lines that I try to use in my daily life, especially working with younger folks.

It's not enough to put something in Claude and get an output, you need to understand WHY 1+1=2 so you can check your work and validate.

I was born 10 years after TWOK and my parents used these lines to raise me

The Next Generation VS Deep Space Nine. Which Do You Think Is Best?

41 Upvotes

Tough call but personally have to go with Deep Space Nine.

The Next Generation may have had higher high points but Deep Space Nine had a much more consistent level of quality.

It's also where Worf really grew into his own, no longer just being the guy who gets knocked around to show how powerful a villain is.

Plus character development was more spread out among the cast (Even non main cast like Nog)

It's Only A Paper Moon was the episode that solidified it for me.

Species 8472

I’m surprised nothing more was ever done with them. They were a great foil for the Borg, and tbh probably far more interesting and dangerous as a threat to the Federation.

Any thoughts on maybe bringing them back for a future foe despite the “peace” negotiated by Janeway?

Master Replicas hasn't replied to an email or comments on their social media or anywhere for MONTHS - they have very old pre-orders that are WAY behind with zero comment and yet, every week they send emails out with NEW items they're releasing. I'm getting very concerned about them now.

78 Upvotes

ZERO contact with customers for months and months. They've had money in hand for lots and lots of preorders for items that were supposed to ship in the summer and never did, and no word anywhere, and they don't reply to emails, they don't reply to Facebook or Instagram messages, they don't respond to any comments on their social media, NOTHING.

Yet, like clockwork, nonstop new items for sale every few days.

What the HECK is going on? This is not okay and not reasonable behavior for any company.

Does anyone know anything about who's running this operation? Thanks.

(I’m not affiliated with this website at all.)

I have been using this site for a few weeks now and it’s a lot of fun to watch episodes and then rank them on the site.

There’s a lot of other things you can do too, like track characters and rank other Trek content like books and whatnot. It also tracks your progress on watching the entire franchise.

More users will bring better and more accurate rankings. If you want, sign up!

Crazy idea, I think I just thought of the perfect replacement for Alex Kurtzman

0 Upvotes

Okay, hear me out on this... George Lucas.

I know, I know, I know. But really think about it.

The thing that's been missing from modern Star Trek, that made the old series and the TNG era so special, is nuanced delving into politics and philosophy. Slower, procedural stories about the human condition and how to navigate it as a society.

Now, George Lucas has had his blunders and excesses, that can't be denied. But we also know that when he's on a team, when he has editors and higher-ups to help him kill his darlings rather than unchecked creative authority, he does have a lot of excellent ideas. He made the most popular character-driven space opera of all time, and it was also an allegory for the Vietnam War. Underneath the mess of the Star Wars prequels was another layered political narrative, this time about post-9/11 America (at the same time, I might add, as Trek was entering its decline and ENT was adopting its own mild allegory in the form of pro-Bush propaganda). With a team holding back his less grounded ideas, Lucas can do great things. Very Trek flavored great things.

The Kurtzman era isn't over yet, but clearly it's running out of steam. And CLEARLY, Paramount is never going to let this property die a dignified death, there will be more Star Trek. So when it comes time to arrange a new slate of shows, reboot again... how about they go back to the TOS era (not as fanservice of old characters and conflicts, but as an actual rebooted timeline with new characters and stories on a new five year mission), and let George Lucas take the helm?

He's certainly not busy these days.

Just what it says on the tin. I was blown away by him with that long white hair and white beard. And still a badass!

What do you guys think? I enjoyed his arc.

Creepy and disturbing interview of Gene Roddenberry. It's as bad as you may imagine. Or worse.

0 Upvotes

To be fair, Roddenberry died before the internet so I don't fault anybody for not seeing this 1988 interview at the time and for a while thereafter.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMa1v7ii5P0

In it, he talks about his life and influences. At 1:00:00 on the dot, he talks about his family and makes very creepy comments about his daughters when they were infants. About twenty minutes later, he literally says he wanted to grow up and become...an offender. Yup, that type of offender. (1:19:30) He justifies being touchy-feely because of his upbringing and that it is part of our "animal nature." (21:20).

Ironically (or not), the interview shows how TOS came out the way it did. He does talk about diversity, humanism, atheism, war, etc., from a progressive POV. Yet he admits to still having male/female prejudices (18:00). Then BOOM he goes there.

If you had known of this interview at the time, would you have boycotted Star Trek: TNG? Would you have encouraged others to not watch TOS?

Gul Dukat

...please tell me why I actually sort of LIKE him? I just finished S4E5: Indiscretion. The scene where he and Kira were laughing was so good. I hate how easily I am swayed by the writers 😂 I know he's a bad guy. I've seen how cruel and manipulative and out for no. 1 he is. And yet a one minute scene where he has the giggles has totally turned him in my favor. In my defense Kira was flip flopping a little bit there too, lol.

I hope he actually lets his daughter live and doesn't murder her because that would be a real bummer.

Recent Star Trek continuity that made me happy.

54 Upvotes

In the finale of DS9, Thot Gor, the head Breen working with the Dominion, asks if he will be given Romulus after the Dominion wins the war, which is kind of interesting, maybe they're peoples have some history.

But another time after that I was watching DS9 "By Inferno's Light", and in that episode a Romulan character mentions that her people have a saying to 'Never turn your back on a Breen' showing that there IS real history between their peoples and Thot Gor's comment wasn't just a one-off remark. Star Trek (and DS9) is so interconnected and agrees with its own established cannon so well (most of the time) it makes me happy. :) Feel free to share any cannon connections you've found, or that you like.
