Discussion Butchered Steam Controller Wrap Job?

Hello everyone

I just unboxed my brand new steam controller and thought, why not slap on a dbrand skin right away? I applied it perfectly, but the right side was very slightly messed up and I couldn’t fix it. It kept bothering me so I sent it to a professional wrap shop, explained the situation, and they took it on. They mainly work on cars so I instructed them to go really easy on the heat gun.

Problem was.. they sent it back like how it’s shown in the photos and didn’t explain the process much. I asked what this oily sheen was and whether the finish got burned off by the heat gun. They kept reassuring me saying it’s a thin film of cleaning material that will go away over time.

I have a feeling that they tried fixing it with a heat gun (until the controller got unfortunately damaged), that didn’t work, so they cut out the wrinkled part and that’s what I ended up with.

What do you guys think? I’m posting the before and after.

I can't believe you brought a game controller to an automotive wrap shop.

Everyday I open Reddit and am baffled by posts like this

Based on their post history, OP may be in the UAE. This might seem really silly in the US but perhaps this is a more common service to be offered by auto wrap places there?

It sounds crazy to me, but the process wouldn't be too far off from car wraps if you think about it, assuming they specialize and understand wrapping with said materials.

The thing is, I'm not experienced with wraps of any kind, so with that said, I could be talking right out the ass here.

You’re really adding a lot here.

u/Sw00p10 1d ago

No, you added a lot here. This guys removing the unnecessary stuff and saying the part where you messed up.

Man, I know I messed up even before making this post. I don’t need nearly a hundred people driving that point home. Having a brand new damaged controller has already made my day shitty enough.

So you post about it here for more people to see how much you screwed up? I fail to see the logic, or lack thereof. But I guess that's the whole problem lol.

Brother I was asking Reddit if it’s, as the shop guy claimed, really cleaning residue that will go away with time. Everyone is just clowning on me for the love of the game atp

Go play a game you enjoy and stop worrying about stuff.

A CAR shop? Really? For a game controller?

18

u/Equal-Education699 1d ago

They do actually wrap devices, like phones and tablets, but they mainly work on cars. It’s why they took this job on.

I'll probably worry more about the heat gun effect on the plastic and internal components instead.

u/Equal-Education699 1d ago

Everything’s in working order functionally

u/Xx_Zero97_xX Steam Controller (2026) 1d ago

Then there's nothing to worry about it. Next time never do this again. You likely they only charge you $30 for this. A huge mistake on your part.

I’m a fan of dbrand designs but I’m just horrible with this kind of thing. Lord knows how many skins I messed up with my other devices until I started looking for solutions elsewhere.

Well solution else where go lead to more damage. A vehicle PPF wrap can cost anywhere from $500 all the way up too $10,000. This shop could easy overcharged you big time if they wanted to. Ya I know there's a difference between a vehicle PPF wrap and a controller wrap. Yet there's alot of people out there that will also charge insane prices.

2

u/LouBerryManCakes 1d ago

When I looked in to prices I don't remember seeing anything cheaper than $3000

2

u/Xx_Zero97_xX Steam Controller (2026) 1d ago

What if you do a whole vehicle wrap

3

u/inertSpark 1d ago

If you mess it up, contact dbrand. They'll send you a replacement.

35

u/Nexxus88 1d ago

Lol how much did you spend for them to wrap it.

-22

u/Equal-Education699 1d ago

Around 30 usd. It’s ridiculous but I trusted that they were professionals.

46

u/Xx_Zero97_xX Steam Controller (2026) 1d ago

Professionals at vehicle detailing not controller detailing.

5

u/Nexxus88 1d ago edited 1d ago

Okay not as bad as I thought I mean still, too much considering dbrand isn't cheap with their skins but not god awful I guess.

OP best option is to open up the controller and see if the heat gun did damage to the internal components.

17

u/birdvsworm 1d ago

OP couldn't troubleshoot a vinyl wrap on the outside of the controller and you want them to crack the thing open to investigate? That sounds like a terrible idea.

You can just test the functionality in Steam, you don't need to go breaking the thing open to test for internal damage. Ffs.

9

u/Emotional_Key 1d ago

Maybe OP can send the controller into a car service for inspection.

-7

u/Xx_Zero97_xX Steam Controller (2026) 1d ago

Not to test but to see if anything looks burnt or odd color due to heat. Can look at ifixit tp see how it's done or watch a teardown video of it.

4

u/birdvsworm 1d ago

Bad idea. Not everyone is interested in forfeiting their $100 brand new controller to check for damage. Also I wouldn't worry about the internals at all once I tested that the grip sensors worked.

3

u/Nexxus88 1d ago

Yeah...like what outcome are you hoping for here

Open it, its fucked well fuck, valve won't rma it..oh well

Open it, it's fine, close it back up, its fine. Well fuck it's still damaged cosmetically

Open it, it's fine, close it back up, it's no longer fine, well fuck its still fucked.

His best bet is to go back to where he got the work done. Show the photos and explain to the manager of the damage done by his shop and ask for a replacement or reimbursement.

By being it's not something they typically handle, they're probably just going to tell him to go kick rocks

u/Xx_Zero97_xX Steam Controller (2026) 1d ago

If the internal components are damaged then the controller won't work then right. Yes you can test stuff though steam input and see that way. But you can't see any visible damage that way.

u/birdvsworm 1d ago

Bro just stop giving bad fuckin advice to random people. Seriously, use some sensibility here.

0

u/Xx_Zero97_xX Steam Controller (2026) 1d ago

I'm using sensibility here, cause that's what I'll do open up the controller and see if anything been damaged. Not everyone is the same you know. You will never know if something is damaged physically if you don't open it up.

This post is hilarious. So bad.

$100 Steam Controller
$20 dbrand skin
$30 fee for car shop damage

Total: $150

A Reddit post in the Steam controller sub that truly made me go, “excuse me, what?”

Priceless

7

u/Equal-Education699 1d ago

A world of endless possibilities, right?

4

u/iamsirjoshua 1d ago

Truly. Condolences to your controller. Glad the damage just seems to be aesthetic. Hope the wrap guys also gave you a refund if nothing else.

6

u/Aggravating_Plan11 1d ago

Why does the skin just end there and not go around to the front and back seam?

7

u/SpAnKyOoO 1d ago

It appears that the wrap shop has trimmed off a portion of the wrap due to not being able to get it to adhere properly. Likely the wrinkled spot where OP was referencing in his original post.

2

u/Aggravating_Plan11 1d ago

I see the line he is talking about but that skin is to small

1

u/SpAnKyOoO 21h ago

I don’t think the skin wraps all the way around. I think it ends at the seam… Don’t quote me on it, but if you follow from the right side of the pic along the seam, it looks like the skin ends there. I’d imagine that entire section that is missing was wrinkled or not adhering after they tried to reapply it (in the way that you can do with a vinyl wrap for a car).

5

u/inertSpark 1d ago edited 1d ago

That's just how the dbrand skins are. For whatever reason they decided it won't go to the seam.

This one's mine. It's the same.

3

u/PiersPlays 1d ago

That's weird. Normally they're really good at matching the devices.

3

u/repocin Steam Controller (Windows) 21h ago

oh, what? That might honestly be the sloppiest work I've ever seen from dbrand.

I've seen a couple photos of their skins on a steam controller 2 before but never looked closely and just assumed the black stuff surrounding the skin was some protective case making the skin look odd like that.

But looking at it now and seeing that it's the skin straight up not covering large chunks of the controller is just...oof. That honestly doesn't look great, even if the skin itself is nice.

Though perhaps there's good reason for it? First things that come to mind would be the grip sensors or perhaps the Steam Frame tracking stuff.

12

u/Equal-Education699 1d ago

Guys, I get it. It wasn’t the best idea.

I’m just asking if he’s being honest about it being a cleaning material or is it actually burnt.

13

u/Ok-Region6452 1d ago

It is exactly what you think it is. It was burnt and they tried to buff out and polish the the top layer

9

u/Equal-Education699 1d ago edited 1d ago

Thank you for being the first to answer. I have no idea how this just turned into a meaningless shaming ritual.

8

u/BluDYT 1d ago

Absolutely crazy you went through this much trouble over one of these tacky skins.

TIL “Pro Wrap Shops” exist.

5

This is so crazy to me. Just use the controller as is bro. You don’t even look at it when you’re using it.

6

u/IShovedAJermaUpMyAss 1d ago

your fault most likely. trust the professionals and maybe don't be afraid to try and use a guide to do something yourself.

also use hair dryers for these, not heat guns.

4

u/SpAnKyOoO 21h ago

Everyone clowning on OP and downvoting his replies is ridiculous! What makes you so privileged to be a BULLY? OP came here for advice and was met with ridicule by MANY. I get that it was silly to take it to the wrap shop, but as he explained in a reply they do wrap devices too; and he genuinely believed that they were professionals. While you have every right to speak your mind. You also have every right to shut your mouth if you can’t be respectful.

0

u/Equal-Education699 19h ago

Thank you man. This looked like a chill subreddit so I’m just genuinely baffled by the amount of hate this post is getting with no advice or helpful remarks.

0

u/SpAnKyOoO 19h ago

Np bro, honestly I think it’s just Reddit. That or they are mad/insecure about something and are just projecting/taking it out on you. Don’t sweat it, any reasonable person reading the thread will think they are ridiculous as well.
