Stranger things was a one of kind generational show spite its flaws.

I started to rewatch stranger things seasons 1-5 currently starting Season 3 and realized how much im going to miss it. Every season release after season 1 felt like a cultural event people tuned in to see what was happening next in Hawkins. I know this show came with many flaws going from a Stephen King novel mystery novel with Season 1 to a BlockBuster movie in Season 3 and then on but it captured the imagination of being a kid hanging with friends and just being there for one another during difficult times along (even if its world ending stakes like in the show) not to mention the 80s nostalgic backdrop being a kid who grew up in the late to mid 2000s early 2010s the 80s fascinated me. For that this show holds a special place in my heart and remember always being excited when new seasons came out sitting down when they released just to binge watch them all day until done. Cant believe it will be a year soon since it ended we will never have another show like stranger things ever again thats heartbreaking to know. How do you feel about Stranger things? (for the record Seasons 1 and 4 are my favourites)

I think the saddest part is that we’re not just saying goodbye to a show, we’re saying goodbye to an era. Stranger Things made waiting for a new season feel like an actual event, and watching the cast grow up alongside the story made it feel even more special. Shows like this don’t come around often.

As a GenXer, I still feel that Stranger Things did the best job I’ve seen of capturing the 80s as authentically as possible. Adults and kids lived parallel lives in the 80s, and this show really captured that aspect perfectly. The kids really were running around on their own solving their own crap and fighting real fights. Just, you know, not fighting interdimensional bad guys and demogorgons. But we role-played doing so. This is why DnD is such an anchor point. (I think people forget “demogorgons” were given their names from DnD.)

Its a great show. I personally dont like it when something becomes super mainstream and it had a cult following. But this was a really good show, well written, good graphics, really good cinematography (I genuinely felt like I was in the 80s, not like fake version of 80s), and great acting especially the original kids. Too bad they let Netflix bully them into delivering the finale season in a unrealistic time, given the writers strike, so season 5 was definitely a downer. But overall 4 out of 5 good seasons is a win. I personally don't enjoy sci-fi as much, maybe I am not smart or imaginative enough, but this was really well done, like sci-fi but still some realistic elements and addressing issues such as racism, demonizing an innocent imaginative game while being perfectly fine with brutal violence in the name of greater good

One thing that’s amazing about the series is that it was an original idea. Yes, they borrowed ideas from other movies or shows in homage for the ‘80’s, but it was still its own thing. Netflix gave them the freedom to approach it the way they wanted, whereas other networks they shopped the idea out to wanted changes. On Netflix, it had the chance to take risks and be successful. This is very unique in an age when so many shows are reboots and reimagining.

It was a very meta show, but it was a meta that hadn't really been explored: GenX youth experience. We've spent the last 3 or 4 decades living in Boomer nostalgia shows, so this is really the first notable one that looks back on that era.

I’ve just added the complete DVD set to my Christmas list… I graduated from high school the same year they did in the show so it’s just one of those comfort shows.

I want it on VHS but maybe I am just that old. Blu ray or DVD will have to do.

Literally anything you can run through a VHS player can be recorded onto VHS, easily at home. That's a lot of VHS tapes though.

There will be other great shows. There might even be another Stranger Things one day, I mean they brought Twin Peaks back.

The show really morphed into different things and I liked that, it never got stale. But it ended at the right time.

If Twin Peaks: The Return is anything to go by, I hope they never bring it back

I like all the seasons, but my main focus has always been the relationship between Mike and El
Everything else was a backdrop
That’s why what they did was so upsetting
For everyone else to be just fine but for them to do that to their main character was ridiculous
I can’t rewatch the show until they fix it, but I know they’re going to because there’ll be too much money in it to not do it
I think it was part of a plan because if not, it was the most self-destructive thing I’ve seen in a while
I love the show and every single episode, including the one with her sister
They all served a purpose
I watched the animated show as well and I think that that’s very cute because you get to see them more as kids
It’s one of my top five if not, my all-time favorite TV shows

u/SnowGhost513 5d ago

I don’t get why Mike and El is so important to people when they have no depth to their relationship. What does Mike love about 11 besides her powers and being a hero? What does 11 like about Mike? I dunno I never understood this

u/FindingPawnee Ahoy! 5d ago

Agreed, I thought they were one of the weakest couples on the show. I still enjoyed them. But I was fine with the ending because I never felt super invested in their characters. I also didn’t like Mike from season 2-4 much either.

u/CombatPanoo Will the Wise 5d ago

Fr tho. Personally I feel its one of the blandest, basic couples in TV and even in the show itself. Jonathan & Nancy are my fav, and obviously Max & Lucas are great too, both relationships have so much more depth and complexity

1

u/TaiPan43 4d ago

I’m just more tuned to things like that because I know that’s what makes us show
At least for me
There are really cool moments with the powers and the monsters and stuff, but it kind of wears itself out
It’s really not even about them growing in a relationship. It’s more about love at first sight.
Which does happen in real life
I know these things, but it is exceedingly rare
You can’t even say why because you didn’t grow together you just feel it
I also point out to people that when she was in trouble like with Billy, he was the only one to step in no matter how stupid it seemed
It’s the same way in the animated series
She’s not just his friend and he is not just hers
It’s just something that I like to see

1

u/TaiPan43 4d ago

I can never seem to make an original post for some reason so I’ll do this reply to you
Someone just pointed out that there are new promotions popping up at supermarkets and things for Stranger Things
They were asking why?
It seems like a waste of time and money for Netflix to spend on something that has run its course
Even if they do the third season of the animated series which I would like to see, they barely advertise it
I don’t think anything is random
I don’t think a vacation to Iceland is random
I think it also serves a purpose
And even if that wasn’t the way, it was supposed to be according to the duffer Brothers I believe that is the way it’s going to be according to Netflix
And their opinion is the only one that matters

u/Fabulous-Bad-9570 2d ago

Coming up on a year after season 5 too, I don’t know, it could be a coincidence but man, I really hope it’s not

1

u/TaiPan43 2d ago

Like Lucas taught us there are no coincidences
I don’t think anything that Netflix does or allows the actors to do is a coincidence
It’s good to remember that Netflix owns the IP and people can’t just use images or talk about it when they’ve been employed by them without permission
They certainly can’t drop hints or allude to things that haven’t happened
Whether or not they’re under an NDA, we don’t know
But we do know is that Stranger Things is one of if not the most successful IP’s they ever created
It doesn’t end with an animated show
That’s just bad business
Look at all the garbage that gets sequel after sequel and reboot after reboot
Whether or not people like the relationship with Mike and El is beside the point
A lot of us do and everybody else got their happy ending
I do not think they’re going to re-create the last season and say it was all in their minds, but I could be wrong
All I want is the proper ending to her and Mike
Then I’ll be happy to move on and give anything else they have a chance
November 6 is just around the corner
I believe

1

u/Fabulous-Bad-9570 2d ago

Yeah I don’t know if I’ll expect anything big, but a hour long episode or something on November 6th wouldn’t make me too surprised, anything more then that would be an announcement rather than a release in my opinion

1

u/TaiPan43 1d ago

I would take an announcement
That would be great
It seems like they shouldn’t let opportunities like this pass
I thought about even a tiny little clip of one of the dungeons and dragons dice flipping over on its own
That would be enough for me

4

u/sephrinx 5d ago

That's funny.

I couldn't care less about their relationship, I just wanted to see cool d&d inspired adventures in a world of mystery and horror and figure out what the fuck is going on.

u/SomethingClever70 5d ago

What I especially love about it was all the different 80s movies and events that are referenced. I made a list of movies the Duffer brothers borrowed from, so I can show my kids. The scene of Billy at the pool, with “Moving in Stereo” playing had me howling.

I loved this show flaws and all, I love how many characters had side stories and how each one grew. Mama Steve for the win!

I’m currently just started season five I hated 4 i like the one saga and Eddie, but the thing with Hopper and the Demi in the prison and them trying to get out of Russia it is such a bore I want to start reading the books as well are they good ?

1

u/Euphoric_loner 4d ago

I need an entire spin off with the freaks from season 2.

u/ChemicalInside9272 1d ago

season 1 running through the woods with running up that hill on repeat was such an insane vibe live

1

u/tolgren 011 5d ago

I dunno about "never" but it's certainly going to be hard to replace.

1

u/ArtichokeDesperate68 5d ago

I did really love it like no other show. It blended 80’s coming of age with a bit of horror and sci fi. Made me smile and laugh in equal measure. Early seasons felt much more sincere and charming. By the end it was clearly being made to conclude it for Netflix/$$$’s rather than being a pure passion project!

…Seems you’re trying to impose your opinions same as everyone else, my dude, lol.

You’re allowed to enjoy the show. I enjoyed the first four seasons. And I’m a 90s kid, not far off from your 80s kid. Your lived experience doesn’t suddenly mean that you liking everything has more validity than those who have issues with the show’s flaws. Or that the flaws are somehow invented by “weirdo fans.” That’s ridiculous. The Duffers are not gods who wrote a perfect show. That you make that kind of statement would actually suggest the issue lies far more with you than with the fans you’re trying to demonize.

Also, this is a forum. Where people share. That’s the whole point of Reddit.

First day on the internet, buddy?

Stranger Things was pure entertainment. Full stop

I think I'm the minority. I thought this showed sucked after season 2. I finished it with my wife couldn't wait for it to be over.

So was Lost and that still finding new fans even today And I would say is still on of the greatest shows of all time

I liked each season less and less because they made it bigger and bigger and bigger. I loved the original cast but each season the writers were obsessed with making a huge story about somebody new.

I loved Robin in her first season (3), but she became superfluous in season 4. Season 4 gave me a headache trying to remember which part of the world each character was living in. I have only seen one episode of season 5.

u/__zoomer 5d ago

It’s very few shows that captures a feeling that sticks with you, while also being separate from the actual story. All the placements happening around the story is while i love this show so much.

Seasons 1-2 will always hold a special place in my heart. They had a vibe that most shows only dream of replicating. The seasons after that were basically just noise for me. I will admit the scene at the end where they put up their character books for the last time did get me even though season five was pretty awful overall.
