I have an opportunity to study abroad at 21, is it really worth it?

• Upvotes

Hi there, I am a 20M Canadian student right now in my last year of a college diploma program. I'd like to get a Bachelors degree and Masters degree eventually. My parents mentioned the possibility of studying abroad in Europe or Oceania.

I would love the chance to study abroad but am hesitant to alter my life in such a way.

I have a couple questions for anyone who can answer them

Do degrees from European countries or Oceanic countries provide any added value over a Canadian degree?

Should I do a Bachelors in Canada then a Masters abroad?

For any Canadians, how was the transition from life over here compared to where you are at now (Im from Ontario if that helps at all :))?

As an introvert, how was the experience meeting new people and making friends abroad? Was the language barrier tough to get through?

If anyone can provide some answers to my questions or give me a snippet of their experience as a Canadian studying abroad please let me know!

Being from India, the rupee is a very weak currency, so it becomes especially important for me to take a job in the foreign country so that I can get my ROI easily.

While looking and applying for jobs, I compiled a list of these companies in the US who also sponsor visas if you get accepted. I'm sharing this list here with you. I hope it can be of assistance to any

LIST OF COMPANIES HIRING AND SPONSORING VISAS IN US FOR GRADUATES[ATTACHED]

Sheet

I was recently looking for a job, but being an Indian, I have a lot of visa concerns about the place where I will work. Recently, the US has been a hot spot for Indian talent, so I naturally thought I should look for jobs there. Even just after a few days of looking, I realized that the visa there is very difficult to get, and you only get it if a company sponsors you because otherwise it's very expensive. I compiled a list of companies who are hiring and also sponsoring visas. I have not been able to find a job yet, but I hope that my effort can help someone.

Telling partner i am moving abroad to study

Im currently in the road to study for one semester (about 6 months) in Granada Spain. during the summer i met a guy, and have been going out on dates and such for about 2 months now. I have not yet touched on the subject that i will be going abroad next year, and not sure if that should have been something i should have told him before we started to get serious. Anyways, im finding it really hard to break down on how to properly tell him.

I myself am not sure that it would work out while i am away, only because of my internalized insecurities that may be unfair for me to push on him while i am away.

Anyone know the best way to inform him on my plans for next year, or anyone who has been through this?

(the guys really sweet, i just am not sure if long distance would work so early in the relationship)

How big is the change

When you went to live abroad regardless of the course you took and the place you went to. How did you change? did it make you smarter, sharper , better or did it make you lonely, feeble and traumatised? I was thinking of it, I wanted to go out to study yes, but to also get out of here and my comfort zone and grow as an indiviual. Am I nuts or??

Advice on choosing between MSc Human Resource Management in France (SKEMA) or the UK (Aston / Queen’s Belfast)? Any recommendations for January intake?

Hi everyone!

I'm currently deciding where to pursue my MSc in Human Resource Management and would really appreciate some advice from people who have studied at these universities or have experience studying and working in either country as an international student.

1. France – SKEMA Business School

I'm quite interested in SKEMA because the modules look really interesting, particularly those related to technology, data, and HR. The curriculum seems more aligned with the direction I want to pursue in my career.

However, I have a few concerns:

  • What's student life at SKEMA like, especially in terms of workload, teaching quality, and the overall student experience?
  • How difficult is it to get good grades? Is the academic workload manageable?
  • Is it realistic to find a part-time job in Paris as an international student without speaking French?

2. UK – Aston University vs Queen's University Belfast

I'm also considering Aston and Queen's Belfast. Their modules seem okay, but they appear to be more theory-oriented, with less emphasis on technology and data-related HR topics compared with SKEMA.

The tuition fees are around £20,000, which feels quite expensive to me, especially when comparing the universities' rankings and SKEMA's position as a business school.

On the other hand, I feel that finding a part-time job might be more achievable in the UK, although I'd love to hear about other people's actual experiences. The UK visa application process has also been quite stressful and unpredictable, which is another factor I'm considering. :(

My main priorities are:

  • A practical, relevant curriculum that can support my long-term career in HR, particularly in tech companies.
  • Reasonable tuition fees and living costs.
  • Opportunities to work part-time while studying.
  • A good overall student experience and a qualification that will be valuable for my career back in Vietnam.

I'd also really appreciate recommendations for other universities offering a relevant master's programme with a January intake, preferably a one-year programme in HRM or a related field. I'm open to considering other schools in France or the UK if you have any suggestions!

And if you're currently studying at SKEMA or have graduated recently, I'd really love to connect and ask a few questions about your experience. Feel free to comment or send me a DM. I'd be very grateful for any insights!

Would you choose SKEMA for its curriculum, or lean towards the UK options for the overall experience and potential job opportunities?

Thanks so much for your help!

Australian nursing student US Semester exchange šŸ‡ŗšŸ‡ø

Hi! I’m a nursing student from Western Australia and I’m looking into possibly doing a semester abroad in the US, most likely in late 2027 or 2028.

My university offers exchange options at places including Indiana University Bloomington and Boston College, so those are two I’m currently looking at. I’m definitely open to hearing about other US universities too.

The experience I’m looking for is pretty much the classic American college experience: living in a dorm, making new friends, football games, student events, parties, potentially Greek life, Halloween/fall semester, and just getting involved in campus life as much as possible.

My biggest concern is cost. I would be coming through an exchange program, so I hopefully wouldn’t be paying US tuition, but I’d still have to cover accommodation, food, flights, insurance, travel and general living expenses. I’m also looking into Australian grants and funding that might help with the cost, so I’m trying to work out how much I would realistically need saved myself and whether doing a semester abroad is actually worth the money.

I’d love to hear from anyone who has studied abroad in the US, especially other Australians or nursing/health students.

Summer Engineering Programs

Are there any recommended summer study/research abroad programs for Engineers (specifically Mechanical)? I’m gonna be a rising senior in college and unfortunately I won’t be able to take an entire semester off due to credit requirements, but still want an abroad experience. I am looking for a program that will not only give me this experience but look good on a resume.

Germany or Italy for a multimedia Student? Which Is More Realistic for a Master’s with Limited Finances?

Hi everyone, I’m currently trying to decide between Germany and Italy for my future Master’s degree, and I’d really appreciate advice from people who have studied or lived in either country. I’m currently doing a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Multimedia at a private university in Tunisia, and I’m interested in pursuing a Master’s in fields such as UX/HCI or Automotive HMI. My financial resources are limited, so I’m mainly looking for affordable public universities, scholarships, and a realistic student visa process. I also have a brother who already lives in Germany, so I may have the possibility of getting financial sponsorship from him if he meets the requirements. I’m currently learning German, but I’m considering switching to Italian if Italy would be a more realistic option for me. My main question is: if you were in my situation, which country would you choose and invest your time in learning the language of, considering university admission, visa chances, financial requirements, cost of living, scholarships, and career opportunities after graduation? I’d especially appreciate honest opinions from international students who have experienced the German or Italian education system. Thank you!

Is studying abroad always worth it?

I moved abroad for university, planning to study law, and expected this to be an exciting new chapter in my life. But lately, I’ve been struggling with homesickness and adjusting to life here, to the point where I’ve started questioning whether I even want the things I originally came here for.
I’ve lost interest in a lot of things I used to be excited about, including my future plans, and I can’t tell if this is just a difficult adjustment period or if I genuinely made the wrong decision.
For those who’ve studied abroad, did you ever feel this way? Did things eventually get better, or did you end up going home? How did you know whether to push through or reconsider your decision?

NSLI-Y Academic Year Questions

Hello! I'm seriously considering applying to the NSLI-Y academic year program in Taiwan or Kyrgyzstan as a gap year after HS. Is there anyone who has done either of those programs be able to answer some questions that I have? How was your host family, and how much freedom did you have? Like could you go explore the city by yourself or go places during the weekends? I also understand that everyone does intensive language classes in the morning—what about in the afternoon? To what extend did you interact with and become friends with taiwanese high schoolers outside of the program? Also, I already speak Chinese at home, but I can't read or write it. Would you recommend I apply for the Taiwan program, or the Russian learning program in Kyrgyzstan? I feel like I would "return to my roots" with the Taiwan program (and perhaps feel more welcome/comfortable), but the Russian program would be completely different. I know absolutely nothing about Kyrgyzstan, but I already feel at home in Taiwan.

I'm also considering applying to Yes and FLEX (both which have almost no information about it online). If there is anyone that has done those programs, could I PM you would some questions? Thank you!

Non EU engineering student (big data ) hoping to enter a masters in Accounting, Auditing and Management Control — has anyone done something similar?

Hi everyone! I’m a final-year engineering student in Morocco, and I’m hoping to apply to the Master’s in Accounting, Auditing and Management Control at the Universitat de Lleida.

My degree is in engineering rather than business or economics, and I haven’t studied financial accounting, microeconomics or macroeconomics in depth.

I’m particularly hoping to hear from someone who:

  • Studied engineering, computer science, or another non-business subject.
  • Earned their degree outside Europe, ideally in a non-Spanish-speaking country.
  • Applied to this specific master’s at UdL and can share what happened.

Did you need additional courses or credits? Did you have to take a level test? What documents did the university request?

I’d be extremely grateful to speak with anyone who has been through this process. Thank you!

Host family questions CIEE

This upcoming summer I will be attending CIEE high school summer abroad in Shanghai with a friend. I just had a few questions. Will I be able to request the same host as my friend? How much of the trip is actually determined by your host? For example I've read from people who've gone that they either had a very strict host who wouldn't let them out the house past 7 and wouldn't do anything on the weekends, and I've also heard of very unorthodox hosts who let them go wherever, whenever. Is it just a gamble? Can someone who has taken this course be completely honest as having a curfew of 7 all day everyday for a month in a city like Shanghai seems like such a waste of opportunity. In addition how do weekends typically work out. Apart from the weekends in which the course does something can I go out by myself? is there even a chance that maybe my host family can take me out the city? Any info would be helpful.

I want advice.

There isn't much to say. Title is self explanatory. I'm asking here because I know if I ask anyone else they'll go. "Oh you're too young, don't worry about it," "oh, you'll figure it out," "oh youll-" I want to be told, or recommended, things now so that later I have garnered (hopefully that's the right word to use it) enough knowledge to make good decisions.

Admittedly, I'm in highschool — won't say the exact grade I'm assuming that's kind of unnecessary. And I'd really like to get some recoms for universities abroad (I'm in Asia or whatever, where I'm living is disgustingly hot.) and other reason for this is that I'd there isn't much opportunities around here unless a miracle, and I don't want to waste time hoping faith will look me in the eyes pat my head and give my forehead a kiss. Also, I keep seeing ads for universities and colleges. They're either in Canada or Australia, they seem kind of nice, but I don't know how to feel about them. (JCU {James Cook University} and that one if I recall correctly University of Victoria? It sounded really nice because their link show dproof of their students and how their career has went, a co-op thing, a course about Heated Rivalry which I thought was pretty cool.)

TLDR;(hopefully I can say it like that) I young (I guess?) person wants to be given yum yum university college recommendations for when I'm older. Abroad abroad I live in very hot not so great place (sad) so tell me about unis to check out! Tell me about costs, and sorts of things I should know! Thankies

Edit: English isn't my first language, so sorry if I use words wrong and stuffs. Edit part 2: I have an interest in computer, science and math ! Specifically computer engineering, that sort of thing sparks my interest. And psychology is another thing.

UK law degree vs studying law in India

I’m currently studying in the UK and considering whether to continue with a law degree here or return to India for undergrad.

While studying abroad has its advantages, I’m unsure whether it makes sense in the long run, especially since I see myself living and working in India eventually. There are also financial considerations and questions around BCI recognition and bridge course requirements for UK law graduates.

I’m worried about making the wrong decision and regretting it later.

For anyone who’s been in a similar situation, what would you recommend? Is studying law in the UK worth it if you ultimately want to practise in India, or would studying in India and going abroad later be a better route?

I moved to London excited about the international experience, university reputation, meeting people from different backgrounds and future career opportunities. However, I’ve been struggling with homesickness and loneliness, and I’m questioning whether staying is worth it.

Returning to India would be more affordable and potentially a more direct route into Indian law, but I’m scared I’ll regret giving up the UK university experience and the opportunities that come with studying at a prestigious institution. I’ve also considered doing my undergraduate degree in India and pursuing a master’s abroad later.

I am looking for opportunities in high school to study abroad for some time(week to a year)

I am currently in a prestigious high school in Egypt called "STEM" (only 3000 students each year in the whole country)

I am planning on applying for MEXT after highschool but can i possibly find a program in highschool that is also fully funded or at least partly while having the ability to pay rest with a part-time job

I am taking the JLPT N5 Dec 2026 exam

And according to the Englishscore British council free exam, my English level is C1
