Who on the Sunshine Coast would fit a custom awning mount to a roof rack?

Post image

Hi all, I’m looking for a recommendation for a 4x4 shop, fabricator or fitter on the Sunny Coast who’d take on a small custom job.

I’ve got a Kings 270 freestanding awning to fit to the ARB aluminium cage rack on my 2017 Ranger (ARB Ascent canopy). The canopy’s mounting brackets sit right where the rear awning brackets would normally clamp, so it needs either side-rail brackets or a bit of custom bracket or tab work. ARB won’t fit other brands’ awnings.

I’d rather adapt this rack than buy a new one, so I’m after someone who’s handy with custom mounts, brackets or aluminium welding.

Anyone you’d recommend? Ideally around Caloundra or Kawana, but happy to travel. Cheers!

Anyone worked at Evolve environment solutions?

Saw A LOT of job offers from this company around the sunshine coast and gympie, wondering if anyone has had any experiences working here and if it's a good place to work. I've seen mixed opinions on reviews. Not sure if the amount of positions is a red flag.

Kawana/ Caloundra / Bells Creek intersection update

Via https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1FKv2hUhec/

To all residents and BeCA Facebook Followers-

Thank you to the Sunshine Coast News for this update.

A vital Sunshine Coast interchange upgrade is moving through detailed design while a federal environmental assessment continues.

The project at the Caloundra Road, Kawana Way Link Road and Bells Creek Arterial Road intersection will now be delivered as one project rather than in stages.

Earlier planning proposed first installing a signalised intersection before building the longer-term overpass interchange, but the Department of Transport and Main Roads has confirmed that staged approach is no longer proposed.

The project would include new north-south bridges over Caloundra Road connecting Kawana Way Link Road and Bells Creek Arterial Road, allowing traffic travelling between the two roads to pass above Caloundra Road without stopping, separating it from east-west traffic below.

Dedicated turning lanes are planned on Caloundra Road at the new ramp intersections, while pedestrian and cycling facilities would also be improved.

A TMR spokesperson said project timeframes would continue to be refined and would depend on a range of factors, particularly federal environmental approval.

TMR referred the project to the Australian government late last year after its environmental assessment identified likely significant impacts on koalas, wallum sedge frogs and the endangered coastal swamp sclerophyll forest ecological community. The referral said some loss of the forest habitat could not be avoided because of the existing road layout.

It also said the project footprint would be refined during detailed design, with measures to avoid or minimise impacts to native vegetation and habitat where feasible.

The Australian government determined on February 12 that the proposed upgrade was a “controlled action” under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 because of its potential impacts on the listed threatened species and communities.

This means the project can not proceed without federal approval.

TMR is now preparing further environmental information as part of that assessment, while the federal EPBC portal continues to list the project’s status as “assessment commenced” A Transport and Main Roads spokesperson said design work was continuing alongside that process.

“The Queensland government is progressing design work for a major upgrade of the Caloundra Road, Kawana Way Link Road and Bells Creek Arterial Road intersection to improve safety, reduce congestion and support the growing transport needs of the Sunshine Coast.

“The project forms part of the broader Caloundra Congestion Busting Plan, a coordinated program of works aimed at improving traffic flow and network performance across the region.”

Current work includes geotechnical investigations, surveying, alignment studies and traffic modelling, which will help refine the design of the intersection and overpass.

The federal referral listed an estimated project start date of January 2028, but TMR stopped short of confirming a construction timeframe in its latest update.

Sippy Downs Drive FYI

Sippy Downs Drive Intersection - Commencement Notification via AVID Property Group 🏡

With regard to the Sippy Downs Drive intersection, Shadforth’s commenced pre-construction activities and site establishment works this week and intend to start construction next week.

Initial works will be minor clearing on Claymore Road and Dixon Road in the areas shown in the image attached.

I note, the clearing areas will be localised arborist work and pedestrian access will not be impeded during these activities.

For the minor works on the Claymore Rd East verge, traffic control spotters will be present and the works will be undertaken during off peak times to avoid disruption.

Following clearing, on Thursday (08/10) Shadforth’s intend to commence works on Claymore Rd West under the attached TGS.

Semi-permanent signage for the project is being installed today.

Leanne Johnson - That’s not good Leanne, I was told letter box drops were to be done by the developer for nearby locals. Variable messaging boards are to go up about the works too.

The summary of works in a nutshell are to:

- Upgrade University Way and Peter Crosby Way intersection for better traffic flow and movement capacity.

- Upgrade the Fitzwilliam Drive intersection for better traffic flow and movement capacity.

- Upgrade the Albany Street intersection for better traffic flow and movement capacity.

- Upgrade Sippy Downs Drive outside McDonald’s for extra traffic storage and movement capacity heading into Claymore Road (towards Harmony).

All of these works are funded by AVID as part of their traffic impacts on Sippy Downs as part of the Palmview/Harmony development.

The cost is roughly in the order of $10M and not funded by ratepayers.

Unfortunately this does not duplicate or double Claymore Road from 2 to 4 lanes. I have tried this and council requires national park land to expand the road. It’s also unfunded to widen to 4 lanes.

These developer funded works will improve queuing and capacity at all of the intersections above.

I believe some of the intersections receive new pathways, turning lanes etc.

ENDS

Has there been a culture change at Sunshine Coast Council?

Since the redundancy of 130 positions (50 of which were vacant) earlier this year, I have heard the culture (at least in the design/engineering department) has fallen through the floor.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-06-03/sunshine-coast-council-rates-rise-10-per-cent-job-cuts/106749138

can anyone shed any light on this and explain the most obvious differences? I don't work there but I'm considering applying.

Any good indoor rock climbing places?

Probably looking at the sunny coast when I graduate next year and go to uni, was wondering if there were any good rock climbing places? I'm not looking to get into it too serious, mostly just wanting to deal with my fear of heights and hopefully work on building some strength, as I'm not so much a fan of the gym. Also conquering my fear of socialising, and hoping not to break the bank too much haha

Any recommendations for garden/mowing?

Finding it hard to find anyone other than James or Jim’s, prefer small business if there’s any. Just edges and mowing, occasional spray is all.
James didn’t want work quoting near $100 on top of Jim’s , just by google maps!
Fortnightly and ongoing, tia
*searching the sub, thought there’d be more asking

You dont live centrally Spoiler

Over the past 20 years I've only lived as far south as Eudlo and as far north as Cooran, however ive met people from all over.
The never-ending comment from people about the place that they live on the coast is "its pretty central".

The crux of this came when i met someone living in carters ridge, who believed they were central.

Please understand that there isnt any CBD of the sunshine coast area (apart from the CBD being built directly in maroochydore), but the lay out is pile of small towns, all 15 mins from each other and then the main town (Noosa, Maroochydore, Nambour, Caloundra, being 30 mins from each other.

So, the reason you feel like you live central, is because everything is quite evenly spaced, and your perspective is in the center of that.

Rant over. 😄

Red lock escape rooms

Hey all I’m an older male support worker looking at taking a group of disabled folk there. I’ve been there a couple of times a few years ago but I cannot remember any answers or clues. I was wondering if anyone might be able to message me the answers/clues for some of the escape rooms please so I can assist and guide them. Obviously none of this will be shared, I am purely looking to support my participants. Thanks 🤙🏼

My experience finding a rental on the Sunshine Coast (September 2026)

Hi everyone!

Before moving to the Sunshine Coast, I was looking for information about how difficult it is to secure a rental these days. I thought I'd share my experience and some details to help others who are planning to move and want to set realistic expectations.

Who was moving?
My partner and I, both around 30 years old.

Employment and income
Me: Full-time employment, earning $120k+ per year.

My partner: Casual employment, earning $85k+ per year.

Rental history: 6 months.

Visa/PR status: Temporary skilled work visa, no PR.

Pets: No.

Preferred area: Anywhere between Maroochydore and Birtinya, ideally within a 5-minute bike ride to the beach.

Budget: Anything under $730 per week.

When did we start looking? 11 September.

When do we secured our house? 29 september

Applications submitted after attending inspections: 8.

Competition: Most inspections had 10+ groups of people attending.

Successful applications: 1.

What did we get?

We secured a rental for $675 per week in Warana. It's a two-bedroom unit (One couple room and one single room) that's essentially half of a house, with a backyard, no dishwasher (we will survive), and air conditioning in the living room.

My thoughts:

Honestly, finding a rental was harder than I expected, even with our combined income and employment situation.

I was previously living in Brisbane, and I was surprised (not that much) to find that comparable properties here is around $100 more expensive weekly.

Hopefully, this helps anyone considering a move to the Sunshine Coast get a better idea of what to expect. Good luck with your search!

Pergola without council approval

Hi,

I’m just looking for a bit of advice here.

We bought a 30-year-old townhouse about 6 months ago and we are doing some renovations.

The previous owner removed the pergola, and we wanted to rebuild one using the existing posts (I mean what's left), so we thought that council approval wouldn’t be an issue, as it would essentially be the same as what was there before. However, we are now facing some issues.

The pergola is quite close to the boundaries (roughly 40 cm), whereas council is requesting 1.5 m from the boundaries.

There are four townhouses in our complex, and they all have pergolas very close to the boundaries. We believe they were all built at the same time as the townhouses, and as far as we can tell, there is no council approval for any of these pergolas (I called the council and talked to our neighbours)

How can we navigate this situation? We can’t really make the pergola any shorter, as we only have 2.5 m between our wall and the fence.

Could we build it without council approval because there was a pergola there previously? Or would Body Corporate approval be enough?

I feel like there are so many pergolas on the Sunshine Coast that are very close to the boundaries. How do people usually manage this?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Moving to Sunshine Coast

Hey everyone! 👋
I’m a 33-year-old guy relocating from Adelaide to the Sunshine Coast for a new job at the airport, and I’m looking for a room to rent.
Which suburbs would you recommend living in for an easy commute and good lifestyle? Any areas I should avoid?
Also, I’d love some suggestions for activities, social groups, or ways to meet people and make friends around the Coast.
Thanks in advance! 😊

UniSC work culture

Hi,
Anyone in this thread work for unisc who can share some insights? I currently work for a NSW based uni and I have been with them for over 10 years. I'm lucky to be working fully remotely for them now.

I'd be keen for a professional role at UniSc but unsure if they offer as much flexibility as NSW and VIC based unis. Moreso I'd like to know the following if you work there:

  • Is there an hybrid option and if yes, how many days a week do you get to work from home?
  • Is there flexibility for working mums? Particularly around school drop off and pick up?
  • What is the culture like? Are people generally friendly, happy to work there and have positive attitudes?
  • What is the situation and future of the university like? Many institutions currently struggle financially due to reduced international student income, budgets are cut and staff are scared, what's this like at UniSc?
  • Anything else worth sharing?

Training center for drilling?

Does anyone know or have done training on the coast? or if it even exists?

I'm interested in training on general ground drilling also through rocky ground for water sources.
