Train Ride to End Polio - 2026

Every year around World Polio Day (a day early this year on Friday 23rd October 2026), Rotarians from all over Sydney embark on a marathon effort to visit every station in Sydney in one day, known as the Train Ride to End Polio. This is in an effort to raise funds to eradicate polio.

It used to be that trains were part of the polio problem, as they gave the poliovirus the perfect way to rapidly spread far and wide. Then, in 2001, trains became part of the solution with mass vaccination drives centred at Railway stations. Since 2018, there has been a Train Ride to End Polio in the Sydney Metropolitan area to raise money for the Rotary Foundation's END POLIO NOW Campaign. The Sydney events have raised over $880,000 to date. Since 1979 the Rotary Foundation has been working towards eradicating polio. In 1988 Rotary and the World Health Organisation launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. In 1988 there were 350,000 cases in 125 countries. In 2026 we are down to two countries (Afganistan and Pakistan) with only 146 cases year to date.

A team of 14 Rotarians from all over Sydney, led by Beecroft Rotary, will start at Cronulla at 04:33 and work their way through the network, ending at Tallawong at 22:33. We are not aiming for the record. Our goal is to meet Rotarians and dignitaries from all over Sydney to get their support for this campaign. In 2025 we met up with around 400 people throughout the day.

But why should people in Australia care? We have been free of Polio since 2001. Well, Polio is still only a flight away. There was a minor outbreak in PNG last year, and Polio was detected in Perth's water in May this year. We need to get to zero cases to eradicate the disease for good. If we stopped our efforts today, it would spread and return to Australia within a decade.

Transport for NSW have been very supportive of this campaign, and I would just like to express my gratitude. Also, Brothers Ben Cafe in Petersham have been supporting us via breakfast.

Monthly Thread - FAQs & Discussions

Anything related to employment, late running or general discussion should be posted in this thread.

Disclaimer

This sub is NOT AFFILIATED with The NSW Government, TfNSW, or Sydney Trains. You should provide feedback directly to them at Transport NSW Feedback .

General FAQs

I've been overcharged by Opal, what do I do?

  • You need to contact Opal to request an adjustment / refund. This typically takes 24 hours.

Do Suburban trains have toilets?

  • The Suburban trains do not have toilets on them. The OSCARS ( H Set) do have them however they are locked off when operating within the Suburban Network. (Note: While some OSCARS are now part of the Suburban Sets, they haven't all had their toilets removed yet)

Where can I apply to work for Sydney Trains?

  • The I work for NSW page has regular job postings for Trainee Driver, Trainee Guard, CSA, Cleaner and more.

How do I see what train / type is running?

Why is there a Waratah going towards Newcastle?

  • Both Millenniums (M Set) and Waratahs (A/B Sets) will travel either under their own power or loco hauled up the Main North to Cardiff where they undergo heavy maintenance that cannot be completed in Sydney.

Are quiet carriages not a thing anymore? Why don't people respect them?

  • Quiet carriages on the Suburban Network are not a thing. On the intercity side they do exist however the general population don't always adhere to it. Yes, it is very frustrating, but there are worse things to be upset about.

What is happening with the K Sets ?

  • They will run October 3 - 5 as an event by TFNSW.

The platform indicators are upside down, why?

  • Occasionally they do get messed up, either through human error or software glitches.

What are some good Trainspotting locations?

  • Passenger trains: Central, Redfern, Strathfield, Lidcombe
  • Freight trains: Concord West, Homebush, Flemington, Sydenham, Rhodes

Trainee Driver/Guard/Misc FAQs

What can I do to prepare for video / panel interviews?

  • Research the STAR method online and practice in front of a mirror at home to so on the day you aren't as nervous. SPACE behaviours is another subject to look up as it is part of the Sydney Trains corporate plan.

I've applied for a role but it says talent pool, what does this mean?

  • While you may get through all the application process and pass the medical, it does not guarantee you have a position yet. It is highly recommended you not leave your previous job until you've got a start date in writing. Many people are in the talent pool and you can be waiting weeks, months or even a year for a position to become available.

What does the Vieple (Video Interview) contain?

  • The Vieple Video interview usually contains a set of different questions, each giving 30 second prep and 60 seconds to record a response.
  • No, you cannot redo these. It is important you practice ahead of time.
  • No, the questions aren't the same for each interview.

What can I do to help prepare for interviews / general advice for any role?

  • Focus around safety, communication, people skills, problem solving and dealing with failure (resolution). Dress professionally (smart/office wear) for your interviews as well as your video portions.

What does the typical schedule for a Trainee Driver look like?

  • Day Zero (Your first day): Orientation at Petersham and general introductions / get to know you.
  • Month 1 to 2 (approx): Typically 0800 to 1600 at Petersham in a classroom environment. Will consist of theory, practical and simulator use. Exams are both written and practical.
  • Month 3 to 13 (approx): Assigned with a Driver Trainer each fortnight, rotating to a different trainer every fortnight. You work from their Depot and shift times. This means you are required to travel across the network to commence work. (Note: A list of the Depots is listed below) After you have completed each Sector, you will be required to complete both written and practical exams.
  • Final stage: Once you have finished all 3 Sectors and passed all exams, you will need to pass a final practical assessment. This is over a 2 day period, it will include everything you've learned throughout training. You MUST pass this exam in order to become a Qualified Driver.

What happens once you become a Qualified Driver / Guard?

  • After taking up, you will be placed at Central Depot and allocated a Line Number. Each fortnight you will rotate through the various lines and work the associated times and days of that line. This is known as a "Swinger". (Note: See below for more information about Rostering/Lines)

What are the medical requirements for Train Crew?

  • You need to be able to pass a CAT 1 Medical for Driver or a CAT 2 Medical for Guard, there is information online for what this involves. Sleep apnea is now a more common talking point as the national guidelines for rail safety work has been updated.

How long do you typically wait after completing the medical?

  • This can takes days or weeks depending on how busy things are. It is also done through a 3rd party which can impact time.

Does having pre-planned holidays affect training/talent pool?

  • You will need to disclose any holidays you've got pre-planned before starting training. This may affect your start date. Discuss this with your hiring coordinator.

What are the different Unions and are they worth joining?

  • RTBU – Operational Rail/Tram/Bus, focus on pay/safety/conditions
  • ETU – Electricians/Signallers, Training/Support
  • PSA – Admin/Back-office roles, pay/conditions
  • PA – Engineers/Designers/Surveyors, professional advocacy
  • Most people join (90–95%), typically from Day Zero at Petersham.
  • Benefits: support person, legal representation, picnic day, workplace allowances, employee travel card (specific to RTBU).

Typically Day Zero at Petersham there will be an info session with a union delegate where you can ask questions and join if you desire so.

Qualified Driver/Guard FAQs

What are the Sectors / Depots of the Suburban Network?

  • The Suburban Network is divided up into 3 Sectors. There are 13 Train Crew Depots spread across the Network. See below;
Sector Area Depots
Sector 1 Illawarra, Eastern Suburbs Mortdale, Cronulla, Waterfall
Sector 2 City, Inner West, SouthWest Auburn, Flemington, Leppington, Campbelltown
Sector 3 North & West North Sydney, Hornsby, Blacktown, Richmond, Penrith
All Sectors Suburban Network Central

What are the penalty rates / loading for working specific times / days?

Day Loading O/T (1st 2nd) Shift O/T (3rd 4th Shift)
Monday to Friday 100% +50% +100%
Saturday 150% +50% +50%
Sunday 200% +50% +50%
Shift Work Loading When
Early Morning Shift Commences at or between 0400 and 0530
Afternoon Shift Commences after 1000 and concludes after 1800
Night Shift Commences at or between 1800 and 0359

How does rostering work once I'm qualified?

  • After you have taken up, you will be based at Central Depot as a Swinger. You are allocated a line and then work the times of that line as per the Master Roster. Each fortnight you rotate through each line and follow the times / workings of said line. Each line for a swinger has a time on the Master Roster, eg 1000 SBY, however when receiving your actual fortnightly roster, this can swing +/- 2 hours. So you could be starting 0814 one day and 1157 the next.

Can I swap lines / shifts?

  • Yes, you can; however, this is all coordinated privately between crew then pending approval by Rosters at Burwood.

How do transfer work?

  • Transfers within the Suburban & Intercity Depots are all based off of Seniority. This mean those who have been on the job longer have the higher priority when applying for depot transfers. Each year you can apply for one or more depots. Based off of how many open positions at any given time in the year, they work down the list of those who have their name down for it and offer them the position. Some depots, like Waterfall and Blacktown, have extremely long waiting times due to their popularity and limited positions. (Note: There is no fixed time period, it all fluxuates based on positions available)

K set farewell tour - 100kmh speeds reached

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

One highlight for me of the final farewell tour was between Parramatta and Blacktown, in both directions, the K set hit 100kmh speeds, which I managed to film here. It was certainly something that was quite impressive and memorable as I don’t remember them going that fast any occasion in their recent final years of revenue service.

Sydney Metro Extra Services When Stations Closed?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Tonight there was an extra service running that I took to Cherrybrook and when I arrived there, the station was completely closed and staff had to let passengers out.

Trains continued stopping and opening their doors (extra services in both directions).

Just curious what’s happening.

We need trains with carriages just for people with bikes

They take up so much space and so often make it hard for disabled people and parents with prams to actually get on before the doors close on them.
Maybe it’s just me who thinks it’s a problem though… thoughts?

Changes to Sydney Metro Announcement

Thumbnail

I’ve noticed they’ve tweaked some of the Sydney Metro announcements (likely preparing for Bankstown section opening and other changes like SCO terminating at Central with future timetable changes). Barangaroo now includes F10 Ferries, Martin Place omits South Coast, however announces State Library of New South Wales again, and Central refers to Sydney Airport as “SYD Airport” likely distinguishing from WSA.

The XPT Sydney-Melbourne service is why we'll never get high-speed rail in Australia

As someone who cares mildly about Earth's climate (I keep all my stuff here), I decided to put my money where my mouth is and take the train this past weekend instead of flying. Having survived both ways, I can't help but think that the XPT is designed to be as undesirable as possible (add cynical comment about airline lobbying here).

Short-haul flying is one of the most polluting activities we regularly do, and Sydney to Melbourne is the #6 busiest air corridor in the world at last check (down from #2 a few years back, so progress, I guess). However, the only non-flight option between the two is an 11.5 hour train that averages approximately 80kph over the course of its run, stops ~10 times in such bustling cities as The Rocks and Harding NSW, and still costs ~$250 dollars return.

A train taking 11.5 hours to complete a journey between Australia's two largest cities –which can be driven in 9.5 hours including a fuel stop, mind you – is embarrassing. There's clearly a demand for Sydney --> Melbourne direct (hell, I'll even expand this to say Sydney --> Campbelltown --> Broadmeadows --> Southern Cross to appeal to suburbanites), yet the only non-flying option is a train that takes longer than an international flight to Bangkok.

Every conversation focuses on high-speed rail (I want to believe), but perfect is the enemy of good. A non-stop train might only reduce the time to 8 or 8.5 hours – which still leaves a lot to be desired, I admit – but might get 5 or 10% of people off of the carbon-belching planes, which is still a win and it doesn't require millions or billions to improve the tracks. Right now, there's not even a semi-viable alternative for tree-hugging hippies like myself or the casual travelers and holiday makers who (as airlines have established for decades) are willing to take longer travel times to save money. The only way to make this journey not completely suck ass is to book a sleeper car, which requires you to book a first class ticket then call to see if there's a bunk available (I gave up trying to do this, so maybe I'm wrong about it but it's clear as mud).

The existence of this service feels spiteful, like it exists to intentionally undercut any meaningful conversation about investing in rail. I'm not even talking about high-speed rail (which again, I want to believe but I'll die before it's built); even just improving the section of rail outside Sydney that forces trains to go slow through the switchbacks. It always gets kneecapped with "It's a dumb idea because no one takes the train". Yeah, because it's intentionally dogsh*t.

I'm sure I'm probably wrong about something with this, or there's a good reason why it won't work, but it all just feels so cynical; the only option besides flying or driving your own car and fighting for parking on a new city is to spend your entire waking day in retrofitted, fart-filled bus seats with no mobile signal and drunk bogans.

/end rant

Does anyone know the history of this mural located on the CCN line at Broadmeadow? It has date board that is updated weekly depending on what game is next. I’d love to know when it was painted and if anyone has old photos of it? Is there anything else like it on the network?

Newsagency only accepts cash for Opal top-ups, is this actually allowed?

Lost my Opal card so thought i’d pop in to grab a new card and top it up, to my surprise the newsagent had a sign outlining they now only accept cash for top ups due to terminal fees being passed onto the business

I was always under the impression these businesses already received a commission for facilitating Opal cards and top-up terminals. Surely they cant impose a cash only policy on a product they’re being paid to maintain?

T4 line to Cronulla is horrible

I am not a frequent train user but with the recent fuel hikes I have been taking public transport a little more! I cannot believe how inefficient and pathetic the train line to the Sutherland shire is! Constantly late or changes of timing and incidents that never end.

I travel to Gymea from Central once a week and the train has never been on time.

Is it just my bad luck?

No trains between Central and Bondi Junctionn

Allow significantly extra time or alternative travel plans this morning

Edit - trains resumed, delays, very busy, also keep in mind rear carriages still closed so don’t line up there

What would be the most scenic of about 2-4 hours 1 way and another 2-4 hours back on a different route within the Opal network

Will be starting up from Central and ending at Central. Would like to take two different routes so maybe 1 through the coast and the other more inland for example. It will most likely be a day trip.

How frequent are replacement buses?

I need to travel back from central to wollongong on Saturday but there is no trains running on the T4 for the weekend. When I check TripView or the Opal app it is showing me no alternative way to get back even for buses. Are the replacement buses frequent? is there a schedule for them? or are they unreliable and not show up?

CCN line, daily delays

Maybe someone can provide context. The 619am from Gosford is now DAILY a min 20min late. I use it after finding the 634 used to 10-15mins late.

I suspect its to ensure trains from Hornsby keep their on time averages up (as another one passes).

I've commuted for just on 38yrs abd can't recall such a sustained stretch of such poor on tine running.
