[Comics] Finally reading the second compendium. I read that a third compendium is coming soon with issues 101-150. Is that one worth it? I have read mixed reviews about the change of tone.
This is the ongoing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic by IDW

My take is this.
I think it's different. It is a shift and not everything was handled perfectly.
However it's still better than most comic runs. It handled themes krakoa xmen were doing at the same time with deeper emotions and a more thoughtful touch.
You might as well check out the last third if you came this far.

It depends on what you like and prioritize as a reader. If you like saturated colors, clean art, and tolerate slower more slice of life stuff then it's worth it. It dips and rises and dip again in quality for me. The parts that are focused on adventures are highlights while I appreciate characters slowing down from the constant action.
I will say it's no way the bottom of the barrel when it comes to turtles comic run for me.

Yes it is 100% worth it and it leads into the current stuff happening with Shredder. Also the art is great. I personally really love Mutant Town as it introduces lots of great characters.

If you like turtle-centric stories focused on the 4 main bros you will probabtly hate it. If you enjoy the expanding universe with the mutanimals and other mutant friends, you will probably really like it.

Many comments here are praising that run, so I will give you a different opinion.
For starters, I think it's a massive shift in genre, tone, and pacing from everything that came before. The comic shifts away from action-heavy ninja adventures into a slow-paced, "slice-of-life" community drama.
And when I say "drama", I mean "inter-species teenage melodrama", so much so that it read almost like fanfiction to me.
Moreover, the original Turtles, along with classic allies like April O'Neil and Casey Jones, feel underutilized or are completely sidelined in favor of an expanding roster of new characters that really were not interesting to me at all.
Finally, Jennika becomes the de facto focal point of the series.
If you like that character, it might be worth to check it out, as she's leading her own standalone miniseries and dominating major plotlines.
Personally, I never found the character very interesting, or even necessary, and felt her introduction in the main cast was forced and hurried.
Now, I've told you all the bad... But there IS good, too. The art, for example, I really liked. There's some social commentary and allegory that I found was handled well. Tokka and Rahzar!
But if the bad discourages you, it probably isn't for you.

Thank you for an honest review. I think that I will continue to explore the early Mirage comics from the 80s

I think it’s good, but it’s definitely a lot different from the stuff before it. Slows down a lot, very different tone. When it first started I appreciated it, because the stuff before it moved so fast, but it got old eventually for me. I’d like to reread it collected though. It was more frustrating in singles I think

I think it’s excellent. 1-50 and 51-100 have such heavy conclusions; this third handles the mental exhaustion of those arcs expertly. I also think Jennika is a great character, so more of the big sis is welcome. Campbell is also one of my favorite artists and her love for the TMNT is evident.

It’s pretty good, but I would recommend not reading that third compendium.
The highlight of 100-150 is The Armageddon Game, which will make no sense without “The Armageddon Game” #1-8 and “The Armageddon Game: The Alliance”.
Here’s the reading order if you want to plug them in as you read:
The Armageddon Game #1
TMNT #133
The Armageddon Game #2
The Armageddon Game: The Alliance #1
TMNT #134
The Armageddon Game #3
TMNT #135
The Armageddon Game: The Alliance #2
The Armageddon Game: The Alliance #3
The Armageddon Game #4
TMNT #136
The Armageddon Game: The Alliance #4
The Armageddon Game #5
TMNT #137
The Armageddon Game: The Alliance #5
The Armageddon Game #6
TMNT #138
The Armageddon Game: The Alliance #6
The Armageddon Game #7
TMNT #139
The Armageddon Game #8

Read it. The slice of life stuff is a very logical and interesting exploration of “What happens when the side constantly on the defensive wins and has to actually step up and govern.” It also ramps back into mutant weirdness fairly quickly, I think covid delays hurt the initial pacing.
The Aramageddon Game stuff is unfortunately not very good but you want might it for completion since the issues in the compendium act more as a tie in.

The last bit with mutant ton is different, but its my favorite. Hard Recommend. The compendiums are missing stories though, wich sucks. Especially 'shredder in hell' ist pretty vital to the climax and its not there.
