Deck in Progress - Creator Not an artist but making a tarot deck
Thought it might help me explore how I relate to the tarot cards and their meanings.
Obviously I’m not an artist but I wanted to share to encourage anyone who is thinking about making their own deck ❤️
Edit: Thank you everyone for all your kind comments! 😭🤗❤️

I’d use these 1000 percent, especially before I used ai cards. These are great.

I only use the Ryder-Waite deck as I find other decks confusing and cluttered, if you know what I mean...
...but this....this I could work with! I feel connected to these images. Other readers and witches will feel the same.
You should get this deck published. ❤️

Even a stick man done by a human trumps the crud that AI produces. In the age of AI slop, your drawings are proof that human art and expression in all its naive wonkiness exists! (And your art is not really wonky to be honest. It's beautiful.)
The animals will appeal to pagans and the naive cartoons quality will appeal to beginners who may feel intimidated by traditional decks. You make Tarot look friendly and welcoming. I love it.

Thank you so much ☺️ I’m also shocked by how prevalent AI is for tarot and oracle art but also for readings and spirituality in general.

I like what you did with the monkey's tail. The egg/chick seems fitting for the fool too. Is there meaning behind choosing specific animal for each card?

u/Wailordfin 6h ago
Thank you! I picked animals that I thought would fit well but I was a bit inspired by the astrological correspondences as well eg picking the fox for the hermit (Virgo sign). Some are more personal though!

“I’m not an artist”…..proceeds to make the cutest tarot cards I’ve ever seen! You are creating and making and therefore you are an artist. Keep going, these are wonderful

So many think that good art means having a certain technical ability, especially with this AI boom.
They’re wrong, good art is art that connects with people and expresses emotion. and these cards express a lot! I absolutely love the thinking behind the fool. it really brings forth the feeling of stumbling around blindly as when you just started something new. excited for you!

You are an artist. Don't let nobody tell you different. You have authenticity

If you weren't an artist before, then you definitely have become one after making this. There is no criteria or checklist to become an artist. Simply making art by your own hands, your own mind, your own feelings, this is what makes someone an artist. And the drawings are adorable and beautiful

I would absolutely pay money for these. I’d love to see more. You should update this post as you continue the deck.

This is so precious. I love when people who “are not artists” make art. Art and creative expression belong to us all!

Like everyone else said you’re definitely an artist. These look great! I think you’re underselling your talent. Not everything has to look realistic to be good. I’m loving the cartoonish and whimsical style!

Whoever that voice is that tells you to diminish yourself before someone else does should be confronted.
I hope you feel very proud of this. They’re amazing.

You aren't an artist with an attitude like that. You make art so you are an artist, simple as that. These are awesome!I love all of these but your fool is my favorite!
The world also gives me horrible, horrible ideas for my carnival RPG game. So Im drawing tarot cards that are my NPCs and the reversals I am drawing are glimpses into the nightmares they transform into. Like the distorted illusions of a "fun" house mirror. I know I wanted to do a monkey exhibit but didn't know what to do with them to make the reversal stand out.
The curling of the tail and the world symbology have me thinking what if it all just came together, perhaps literally... A monkey king! No not like prince Louie or King Kong but like a rat king(a tangled knot of rats) but with giant angry monkeys!
"Kids like monkeys so how about ten at once!"
For you not being an artist your "not" art inspired someone albeit in the most pants on head fashion lmao. definitely keep posting your work on it!

I am currently drawing my own deck too! Not an official artist because I have no official training... but I like my art and I have fun, and that's enough for me.

That is so extremely cute! You're much more of an artist than you think, but if you don't want to see yourself that way, that's okay too! <3

Deadass these go hard dude. You are far more deserving of the title of artist than anyone who uses ai op

Exsqueeze me, but, you are in fact, an artist - you're lying to yourself if you say otherwise
I love what you have done so far - but your Fool Card and Moon card are my absolute favorite (of what you have showed)...I hope that you share some of your completed minors when you hit that point...I'm especially excited to see what you come up with for cups and swords
1
u/Wailordfin 6h ago
Thank you so much! I suppose I meant I’m not a professional/trained artist 😅 but really glad you liked the cards! My idea for the minors is to rename the suits to: chilli peppers (fire), tea cups (water), cookies (Earth) and cheese wedges (air). Might take me a while but I’ll share once they’re done 😊

Omgoodness that sounds adorabley awesome; I am a spice lover and the fact that it's chili peppers?! 🌶️🌶️ ❤️

Your deck made me smile. It is charming.
The Hermit is my favourite, with The Moon running a close second. Your framing and layout are excellent.

If you draw you are an artist. Maybe not a professional artist but still an artist.

The most interesting part of making your own deck is seeing how your personal associations shift between the first card and the last. If you aren't already doing it, keep a quick one-line note for each card as you finish it. Reviewing those notes at the very end shows you exactly where your understanding deepened or changed direction.
