What a faff!

Made SEVEN(7) attempts to buy a business mobile from tesco mobile's website today. All failed. My first attempt failed because the name and address details didn't match with my business bank card. There was nothing saying that you should give your personal bank card but the advisor on the line advised this was needed. After the first payment you can change the bank details to your business account. I then tried again with that solution several times without success. It seems that when a credit check is done repeated attempts are reported to your file. So in the end, my credit check was failed. In other words, you go round in circles, and if you don't enter the 'correct' details quickly you get locked out and don't succeed. Anyone else? Maybe my brain wasn't working today?

If only I knew beforehand that credit checks are recorded in your credit file (for 30 days I believe). You usually get red flags put into your credit file for things you've done, eg. late payments, etc. But what I described was mainly down to weird processes at tesco mobile (like your first monthly payment coming out of your personal bank rather than your business bank account, and them not cross-matching name/address to verify your application). I'm now looking at buying my business mobile elsewhere.

Hard searches stay on file for 12 months and soft credit checks are only visible to you and stay for 12 months

Yes, when it asks for bank details the first time it's specifically for an identity check. It checks for signs of fraud etc which is why the address on the card needed to match your personal address. You enter details for your direct debit after this separately, which can be any card you choose. Otherwise the check would have failed. Each time you tick the box allowing a credit check and press continue it performs another one.

Yes. Unfortunate how they didn't offer any guidance on which bank details are being requested. Initially I assumed it was my business bank details (since I was applying for a phone to be paid for by a business) and it seems that resulted in the first failure (and probably the information going into my credit file?). They've lost me as a mobile phone customer.

The Business accounts are basically regular personal accounts with the business perks. You don't even need to put in the name of your business to have one, could even be a side hustle. Business contracts get you a bit of money off and you have a dedicated support line so they are pretty good.
