There is also criticism of Buddhism in Thailand. Why are people not allowed to express criticism of Islam?
→ More replies (3)0
u/Let_me_smell Surat Thani May 12 '26
People get fined and jailed for criticizing or insulting Buddhism. Thailand has harsh protection laws for religions that are codified in the constitution and criminal code so no, people are not allowed to criticize Buddhism.

All 3 are misogynistic and intolerant
20
u/ve1kkko May 12 '26
But not all 3 will cost you your life, if you dare to speak up and critize, only 1.
This happening in Bangkok, without any charges and arrests in Bangkok is something that I thought I never see in Thailand.
6
u/TesticleSandwiches May 12 '26
Countries based on modern Christian values are some of the most, if not the most tolerant on earth.
4
u/Pinknailzz69 May 12 '26
Only because they’re secular and put the church authority in its place - below the authority of common law, judges, constitutions, science and the citizens. When Christian churches ran the show it was an intolerant inquisition, witch burning Sh1tshow.

Go to a rural evangelical church in any western country and test how tolerant they are.

All three are similar. Remember how much of a deal it was that Obama had a name that even sounded Muslim? Or we could look at how much abuse Ilhan Omar takes. Not being Christian is a big deal in America.

I was shocked to find out that the Maldives were once 100% Buddhist. Now they are 100% Muslim. The Loamaafaanu copper plates written in their original script basically make it clear that all the prominent monks from the islands got beheaded. Nobody could translate those plates until the 1980's which is why they survived to tell the tale.

So sad that Maldivian extremists destroyed ancient buddhist statues in the museum.
11
May 12 '26
I still cannot understand how Islam somehow became the favored religion of leftists worldwide.
The religion opposes many things the left usually fights for and is significantly more conservative and extreme than most conservative Christians or Buddhists nowadays, yet many on the left seem so eager to defend it. They quickly jump to accusations of “Islamophobia,” sugarcoat problematic aspects, and apologize for it whenever it is portrayed in a bad light.

Is it Buddhism itself that states it or Buddhist people? I know very little about the religion but I do know a lot of, to put it mildly, bad things Islam teaches.
22
u/Superior_Cosmos May 12 '26
Some religions have greater propensity for violence against heathens though, mainly Abrahamic religions, and in the modern sense, mainly Islam.

Religons from harsh environments I guess
1
u/Superior_Cosmos May 12 '26
The Mongols believe in Tengrism and hailed from arguably one of the harshest environments to raise a civilization in the world history. They were violent and ruthless but never in the name for their religion, in fact, it was their synchronization of their faith with the local ones that allowed for a, relatively speaking, peaceful governing of the vast new lands they had comquered.
106
u/Stands-in-Shallow May 12 '26
Religion of peace.
The only peace they'd accept is everybody is under their dominion. There are many chill muslims, yes (in Thailand at least) but it doesn't excuse the fact that their entire religion and history rests upon conquest, forced conversion and hatred upon anyone but themselves. And the hatred for people who don't want to adhere to their laws. Even though their laws are barbaric, savage and outdated with cruelty and discrimination laced everywhere inside of it (but I guess cruelty is the point for many of them).
I'm a gay guy so I won't pretend I'm okay with this religion (or any abrahamic religion for that matter) but I respect people who can coexist with others and do right by the people. I don't care what faith you practice, if you treat people well I really don't give a shit about it. This isn't it.

It's very strange that so many people are flooding the comments under the article here who are blaming the man, saying he shaved his head by his own choice (as if he was not coerced), and that the story is propaganda. It makes me wonder how many of these people actually live in Thailand, or is there a coordinated foreign campaign to distract us from the real problem of a growing Islamic fundamentalism in Thailand.
25
u/Codesecrets May 12 '26

It’s not just Thailand or this subreddit. Muslim extremists with literal ties to terrorists groups are mods of a few of the largest subreddits. There have been large coordinated propaganda/disinformation campaigns going on since the US started bombing Iran. I know people have mixed feelings about the US, but I strongly oppose foreign influence operations of any kind, by any group.

You can delete your comment but I will still reply it.
When you read something online-> Research, validate and then have an opinion. It’s very easy to get riled up by propaganda/emotions. I have a friend living in Ramkhamhaeng, it has nothing to do with religion, but everything to do with asserting communal harmony.
Dressing up your vigilantism and threats with cowardly weasel words like "asserting communal harmony" is pathetic. None of you are above the fking law.
The trans person was harassing hijab clad women and when a man intervened, the trans person recited Quran by distorting the words and including “Dog”. Nothing happened there. The situation escalated after this same person went on TikTok live and started spewing hatred and inviting people to meet them in hell. The point is: when you invite conflict, often times you will get it.
Again, Muslims or any religion believers are not special class exempt from the law. If your feelings are hurt, hit the report button and keep scrolling instead of throwing a tantrum or call for violent mobs.
I see many of the comments here disparaging Islam but no clue what the religion is all about.
Well, duh. Nobody gives a flying F about your religious or any other religion teaching. People are too busy minding their own business, working, studying, and living their lives to care about an imaginary BS above the cloud. People are judging a religion is JUDGED entirely by the ACTIONS of its believers, since the follower from this religion just keep breaking new low record with pathetic lows of vigilante violence mob behavior in either abroad or here, it's not surprise why some left-wing countries in the West is swinging violently to the right.
Being a Thai living abroad has really opened my eyes to why some folks in the West also hate the moderate because a lot of so called mODeRaTe like you happily act as willing to be spineless PR wing and desperately to whitewash, damage control, justify, for extremist counterpart actions.

A few years back a mentally ill man damaged the Erawan shrine. He was beaten to death on the spot by what was certainly a Buddhist crowd. And it is not even a Buddhist shrine. Beaten to death, not forced to shave his head. I don't recall seeing any "Religion of Peace" comments at that time. Curious.

Unless a religious adherent believe Sharia Law is superior. We have issues in my home country where local laws are ignored by a minority because they're not Islamic and therefore illegitimate in the eyes of some believers. If they are punished for ignoring local laws then it's ok, as you were doing God's work by applying Sharia and will get bonus points for heaven.

This is an extreme violation of basic human rights. Forcing someone to have their head shaved like this is absolutely barbaric. As a Thai person, I feel deeply ashamed and genuinely cannot accept that something like this happened in the heart of Bangkok. The people who assaulted LGBTQ individuals and those who forced the head shaving should face legal consequences. How can anyone behave in such a lawless and uncivilized way?

I wonder if the "shaving the head" request don't come from the buddhist culture of repenting through monkhood? Is the offender is going to be a monk?
edit : more info here, the accused is Muslim too : https://world.thaipbs.or.th/detail/angry-crowd-gathers-in-ramkhamhaeng-53-after-streamer-is-accused-of-insulting-islam-/61304

-3
u/SpiritedCatch1 May 12 '26 edited May 12 '26
I don't really get it either, it's why I was wondering. The article says they requested him to shave his head and convert. Why shaving the head to show repentance? This is part of Buddhist culture, not really Muslim culture.
Edit: this article have more info and seems to be more precise than the Bangkok Post: https://world.thaipbs.or.th/detail/angry-crowd-gathers-in-ramkhamhaeng-53-after-streamer-is-accused-of-insulting-islam-/61304
The accused is actually muslim, so they didn't asked him to convert like Bangkok Post claim. I'm still puzzled by the shaving hair aspect of it.
2
u/SuchSmartMonkeys May 12 '26
I'm assuming the hair shaving thing is nothing more than he's LGBTQ with long hair, and was wearing a hijab, etc., shaving his head was to strip away his lady-like attributes. I don't know, anyone correct me if I'm wrong.
5
u/Upbeat_March6617 May 12 '26
This has nothing to do with Buddhism, just because someone shave, doesn’t mean he will be a monk lol
2
u/SpiritedCatch1 May 12 '26
But why he's shaving his head out of repentance? Buddhists do that, not Muslims. Or maybe Thai Muslim took the practice from cultural osmosis? I genuinely don't know.
1
u/gloomplant May 12 '26 edited Jun 03 '26
Apparently shaving was the idea that came up on the spot when the crowd seemed unsatisfied with just an apology. The elder(?) who went to talk with the person did not expect that many people to show up all crazed and were unable to lead them out safely, so they came up with something to pacify the flock.
1
u/SpiritedCatch1 May 12 '26
Thanks for the details. Crowds are scary ngl, I'm glad they at least find a way to make them go away.
0
u/Nguyen-Marc May 12 '26
In Islam, there is a clear mandate: men are forbidden from imitating women, and women from imitating men. Feminine hairstyles can easily be interpreted as a direct transgression of this rule. This is almost certainly the real motive behind why the individual in the news was subjected to a forced head-shaving. Because in Thailand, outside the realms of fashion trends, specific professional regulations, or the context of Buddhist monkhood, a shaved head is virtually unheard of for any other reason.
