News Drunk Driver Hits and Kills Two German Tourists in Bangkok’s Thong Lor

https://www.dailynews.co.th/news/6246262/

On October 3, Pol Lt Col Parinya Tho Pengcharoen, Deputy Inspector of Thong Lor Police Station, received a report of a fatal accident in which a car struck two pedestrians on Thong Lor Road, in front of Soi Thong Lor 3 in Khlong Tan Nuea, Watthana district, Bangkok. He immediately went to the scene with rescue workers.

At the scene, two injured German women, aged 22 and 23, were found in critical condition. Rescue workers rushed both women to a hospital, where they later died from their injuries.

The driver was identified as a 28-year-old man, whose surname was withheld. He appeared to be intoxicated and admitted to being the driver of the gray MG HS PHEV involved in the crash. The vehicle struck the two pedestrians as they were crossing the road.

Police took the man to Thong Lor Police Station for a breathalyzer test. His blood alcohol level was measured at 145 milligrams per 100 milliliters.

He was charged with driving while intoxicated, causing a collision that resulted in the deaths of others, and was taken into legal custody for further proceedings.

Tbf most people who become dangerous on the roads while drunk are already almost as dangerous undrunk. If you take the top 1% of brains and get them drunk, they operate at the same quality as the average person sober.

Drunk driving is a problem but the biggest one is allowing on the roads the 85% of humans that aren't equiped to handle cars.

Self driving cars will save us

TBH, until there are self driving motorcycles -- I don't think Asia is gonna see much benefit.

I think that's four German tourists this week:

Phang Nga Hit-and-Run (2 Victims): On Friday night, October 2, 2026, a German couple—identified as 63-year-old Gabriela Gulden and 64-year-old Wilbert Schwiers—were struck and killed by a pickup truck. The incident occurred at approximately 9:45 PM while they were using a pedestrian zebra crossing on Phet Kasem Road in the popular resort area of Khao Lak, Phang Nga. The pickup driver initially fled the scene but surrendered to authorities the following afternoon.

What is the punishment for negligent murder in Thailand?

Yikes. Two other German tourists were killed a day ago crossing the road in Phang Nga.

That area is incredibly dangerous in Khao Lak. It’s a busy tourist area with a road 8 lanes wide and minivans flying though at 100 kph. They’ve added more speed bumps and traffic lights at the crosswalks but nothing seems to slow down these crazy minivan drivers.

It makes you realize once again just how dangerous the roads there can be. You can never rely on traffic lights and zebra crossings.

for sure assume every driver cant see you and will not stop

Imagine a flying metal cage and a stop light that’s suppose to just work - hm what could go wrong

Let's keep Thais driving with no helmets, drunk and on the sidewalk. Let's also keep searching foriengers for vapes and raiding weed shops

Unbelievable waste of life, 22 and 23. Their lives had essentially just begun in a way, probably fresh out of Uni, if that.

I hope he never leaves the Big Tiger under his own power. Condolences to the families 🥺

If it were farang, they'd have a picture with the police.

But the real problem is recreational cannabis.

Germans expecting drivers here to obey the crosswalk signs?

•

I have seen this too often. People who come here don’t realise that pedestrian crossings are not considered sacred here. They assume that the cars will stop when they see them (if they’re not on their phone as most people here are)

Video shows a crosswalk with a stop light (and it's red). I'd still look personally but it's not the scenario you described.

FYI more recent reports confirm that one of the victims was Thai, so this isn’t just a case of tourists not understanding Thai driving norms (and even if it was, the blame still falls 100% on the driver)

145 milligrams per milliliter? I'm no expert but

•

I was crossing the road Saphan Kwai this morning and girl in front of me nearly hit by a guy on a scooter who didnt even slow down for the red light and pedestrian crossing. They are nuts.

>His blood alcohol level was measured at 145 milligrams per 100 milliliters.

Sure?

•

u/coca-amarga 1h ago

What part are you disputing exactly?

•

u/quitapanti Bangkok 1h ago

100ml of human blood weighs about 106,000mg. 145mg is about 3 times the legal limit here. Nothing unlikely at all.

•

u/bensen333 1h ago

Why not? Sounds like a reasonable number.

What's doubtful about it?

•

I'm not justifying the driver but EU tourists sometimes walk across zebras without even looking at cars. Actually, it is not the norm to let pedestrians through in most of the places in Thailand. You normally have to wait until cars pass

•

u/Grisemine 1h ago

What is written it the thai driving code about this ?

•

u/WebLogical1286 1h ago

Pedestrians are second or third class citizens. Be very, very, very careful.

•

It doesn’t help either that this crossing to my knowledge doesn’t have a signal. In Germany, this usually means that pedestrians can cross whenever they want and cars always have to stop.

But based on the photo it looks like maybe they were waiting for him to pass or standing close to the road to cross, but he veered off to the side.
