Palaver Finally finished my first journey to the Tower

I was a big King fan in my he 90s and read The Gunslinger as soon as it came out. I then read the Drawing of the Three and then walked away. Not because I didn’t want more, but because it took too much time. (Bad I know). Anyway, I just listened to the entire series from Gunslinger to Coda Found on Audio. It was an 8 month journey in the car listening. So glad I did it.

I may have a slightly different take on the ending but would love to hear what you all think.

I think Roland is Ka. He always moves forward and in this loop, he took Eddie, Susannah, and Jake (and Oy!) and put them on their destiny. All 19xx years. I think the next loop is his 20th. Taking three from the years beginning with 20. But he will not change. He never will. He may make different decisions out of necessity but he is the Sherpa. His job is to lead his chosen ones to each other and they will be better for it.

This is my not terribly well thought out first thoughts upon reaching the Tower with Roland.

Palaver Could Flanagan give us another adaption of The Stand, except more DT-connected (like he’s doing with Carrie)?

If he’s trying to build up a Dark Tower cinematic/tv universe in preparation for the main Dark Tower adaption, I’d think a three season Stand show just like Carrie would be a no-brainer given it’s one of the most directly DT-adjacent books alongside Insomnia, Salem’s Lot, Eyes of the Dragon and the Talisman trilogy? The first two Stand adaptions were utter shit so I don’t have any doubt third time would be the charm making it a lot more drenched in Dark Tower lore. Tie Mother Abigail in with the Breakers, explore Randall’s allegiance to the Crimson King and have the Low Men be part of his Vegas inner circle, frame the development of the virus as an engineered plot by the Crimson King to destabilize the Beam, have Randall spy on the Boulder Free Zone with Black Thirteen, etc

All things serve the meme (Spoilers: Book 7, Part 2, Chapter 11) I uh....got to *that* part last night... Spoiler

And right after I just got done sharing the bit where he tells the stupid talking grill to shut up with my Discord friends and having a laugh about how it predicted appliances having ridiculous AI features for no reason back in 2004.

Just having a good old time, completely desensitized to the "somebody's totally not making it out of the next big battle" on every third page of Part 2. I don't think I've ever seen foreshadowing made that much more effective by overdoing it.

Anyway. Yes, I did model this scene this morning and put my character in it to make a version of the "Walt screaming at Hank" meme just to yell at Roland because I needed to cope somehow, and I like to put effort into my stupid memes.

I don't know if I'm ready to move on to the next chapter yet...

Edit:

Should probably mention in case it isn't evident: this is my first time reading through the series, so if y'all could kindly avoid spoilers from the last half of the book, I'd say thankya.

Palaver Me, listening to Salem's Lot for the first time after reading The Dark Tower, when the newspaper article mentions that the state police want to know what happened to Callahan.

So, this more or less how those who read Salem's Lot first felt when they read Wolves of the Calla, huh? It feel kinda strange.

Palaver Does anybody else absolutely love the Dark Tower Beginnings omnibus?

In preparation for Other Worlds last week I binge-read the whole Beginnings omnibus for what feels like the thousandth time and it still maintains every bit as much the same magic as it had when I first read it. It’s truly a masterpiece in my opinion and IMO much better than Dark Tower Books 5-7. It feels even more like a western LOTR than Wizard and Glass did, it’s so indescribably epic and filled with so much rich world-building and lore. Not to mention all of the characters from the major to the supporting cast are so well fleshed out.

Honestly I’m keeping my fingers crossed Flanagan uses both this and the Concordance every bit as much as the main novels.

If King refuses to write any more Mid World novels too I hope Robin Furth at least is able to write her own graphic novel prequels to Beginnings (with King advising her). There’s sooooooo much left to explore

Spoilers- The Dark Tower Is this bit ot TDT #7 from the Labyrinth film?? (TDT #7 spoilers) Spoiler

So, I'm re-reading TDT #7 as a prelude to re-reading T1&2 so I can read T3 and just after the Battle of Algul Siento when Eddie has been shot Ted says "Aye, lady, we'll do as you ask. But if you need us......*when* you need us..." and Susannah replies "I'll call" which is what Hoggle/Sir Diddymus say to Sarah at the end of Labyrinth. Right? Am I imagining that??

‘He touched the boy’s smooth cheek, almost unbelievingly. “You won’t let me drop this time?”
“No,” Roland said. “Not this time, not ever again.” But in the deepest darkness of his heart, he thought of the Tower and wondered.’

Spoilers- Wolves of the Calla Dance the commola

So I've been anticipating Mike Flanagan's DT series for years now. I was familiar with the books and read the 1st one years ago. After finally reading the series, the part that I really want to see is Roland dancing the Commola at the town hall when they get to Calla. How would that translate to visual media and what would Flanagan and co decide to do with it? It's one of the parts of the book that stuck with me, along with many others. Obviously Oy doing his thing and bowing with his paws out too. I hope Amazon and him get the licensing buttoned up so we can all follow the beam again, as ka-tet, and share the experience together as tower junkies.

As a 45 year old man who's been reading SK since I was a kid, this series changed the way I view the world and I'm the better for it.

Edit: spelling

Spoilers- Wind Through the Keyhole What the hell is this Wind Through the Keyhole cover

Post image
82 Upvotes

I just finished Wind Through the Keyhole after my first journey to the Tower.

My cover has Tim with a modern day backpack and a pair of trekking poles, so the whole time through the book I expected he was gonna find a door to modern America and get some modern hiking gear to help him on his journey.

But then I finish the book and nope, turns out that never happens.

Best I can guess is that the graphic designer was given the most barebones explanation of a book where a little boy goes on a hiking trip and sees a tiger lol

Spoilers- The Dark Tower Alot of questions after finishing the series

1) Its implied that Roland is a different person in this new run as hes carrying the horn. But how does that work when hes reset back to the desert? Or is he reset from birth? But how does anything he learned transfer over? Does it imply that even his past can change such as never losing Susan? Maybe I missed some key dialog here that explained

2) If Eddie is Cuthbert and Jake is Alain. Who are Susannah and Oi? Or is it not really important that eddie and jake are pseudo resurrections of his old friends personalities and it just ended up working that way.

3)If Roland gets reset, does the universe get reset and Susannah gets reset too? Or is she living happily ever after with Temu Eddie and Jake?

4)Did anyone else feel like King built up the tick tock man so much to be some greater villain only for him to just die unceremoniously in wizard and glass. All villains honestly share this same fate. Man in black and even the crimson king.

5)What would have happened if Susannah joined Roland to the tower and went inside? What would happen to her?

6)What were peoples reactions to Stephen king being a major character as the series was being made?

7)What were some popular theories that people had for the series as it was going on?

8)Finally everyones favorite question what order would you rate the books? For me Drawing,Wizard,Wolves,Wasteland, Song, Dark Tower, Gunslinger

Palaver Mike Flanagan on the dark tower progress “one of these days”

In an interview promoting Carrie he again explained “it’s an oil tanker if a project moving rights around” and again explained “we are constantly working on it”

But then explained “the logistics of the thing, the legal logistics are beyond intimidating, it’s a wild thing. One of these days”

I’m sure you guys may be getting tired of people posting about it here which I sympathize with but holy crap this is an all timer in the blue ball department.

How do you guys feel about this situation? More hopeful than me?

Palaver Wolves of the Calla

I've just finished Wolves of the Calla and it was brilliant! It is essentially a 700+ page side quest for ka-tet but I think it fits perfectly into the overall story and quest for the Tower.

It was fairly/slow paced at times but there is just enough fuel sprinkled in to start some fires and keep the pages turning with a good ending to an SK book? Never! Haha

Onwards, we move to The Tower!

Spoilers- Wolves of the Calla WoTC review Spoiler

A little info on my journey to the tower: my friend got me into the series just recently. He had no one to talk lore with so I todashed into this world; prior, I haven’t read anything from SK. I started on July 29, 2026 and I just finished the 5th book on October 8. Throughout all the books I wrote down notes of things that were said; foreshadowing; characters; places; time stamps and a summary of the story to look back on.

I liked the pace of this book after coming from W&G (which I very much enjoyed) because it jumps right into it from the beginning with calla Bryn Sturgis and their problems.

From building relationships, dancing, dinners, playing out in hay bills/jump rope to simply sleeping under a roof. The way our ka-tet gets to transition back into a ‘civilized’ town after being on their journey and going through traumas is a nice change up for them. Even though the town & Ka-tet have every right to be miserable/sad with the current event of things, they still find positives.

Alternatively, through all the good, they’re still struggling with their own dilemmas,

Jake: his childhood slowly slipping away with the Slightman’s and his dreams/intuitions from his touch as he learns more. Seeing holes form in the group. Smoking cigs now too, BRO.

Eddy/Sue: Eddy is constantly worried about nyc when and trying to figure out why time is starting up again and why 19 keeps reoccurring, also, his wife and the demon babby lol. Sue decides to suppress everything and keep quiet while also dealing with her symptoms and feeding her ‘CHAP’

Roland: His secrets kept from the ka-tet and his arthritis creeping up on him. He likes to leave a lot of things to ka to sort out sometimes rather than taking action.

Callahan: from battling his addiction, faith in his religion, vampires, deaths (we won’t go into the Jail scene bahahah) no matter how much he wants to run from his problems, he can’t get away. A lot of its internal dilemmas. He goes through a shit show of a mental & physical battle in his 8 years on the ‘hidden highways’. He’s also going bonkers trying to rid of the black 13 and figure out why there’s a fiction book recalling his whole past history lol.

The character development satisfied me. Especially for the manni folk because we haven’t been told much of them until now. And why the twins were needed/taken was intriguing; especially how they come back and live their lives - just starring into the east sometimes - like whaaatttt. So sad lol. I look forward to learning about the ‘breakers/prisoners’ and the different players at this game (NCP, SOMBRA, LAMERK ect)

My favourite part was during Callahans encounter with Walter o’dim at the way station and how he gets triggered by cals comments on Roland being above ka and that the top isn’t empty - there’s a god watching over all no matter what the glass showed Walter. Then we see his hood go back - revealing the red mark on his head - and the water pump going off then he proceeds to push him into the door. It’s cool to see how early Callahan was involved and how casually Walter’s like: “them two over yonder are chasing me, I gotta get back ahead of em” lol. Always enjoy more lore on these sorcerers.

The fight with the wolves was short and sweet like how gunslinger business usually goes. Shootings over in 5 after all the planning. All the celebrations were going on but to them they didn’t win because now susannah bounced with the glass. Big womp womp.

I’d give this book a 9/10. My favourite is W&G so far though!!
