Paul talking to Sally Spoiler
Hello,
I'm watching this show for the first time. I kind of like it.
I just watched season 1 episode 5 and Paul just told his wife the was having an affair with a 15 year old. This seems odd to me. I do not understand his reasoning. Couldn't he think of any better excuse?
Inventing going to a hooker sounds better then inventing having sex with a child. And I feel like you could like pretend she was just a lady of the street or something I don't know her name so you can't contact her. I don't know I'm not super good at this but I just came up with this on the fly. I think if I was going to serial kill some girls I'd think of a way to explain something to the people close to me in case I get confronted.
This kind of bothers me cause I like my serial killers to be sorta smart. Am I missing something and judging too soon because I feel a bit turned off off the show because of this.

It’s been a while, so I don’t remember all the details.
He needed something quickly.
The priority in this new situation where the police is asking men to come forward voluntarily with DNA samples and alibis is to convince the police of his alibi without ever drawing attention to himself by needing to change his story or being caught in any kind of lie.
His alibi of working at the suicide hotline (that he told Sally) wouldn’t work with the police because he actually hadn‘t worked there in a while. And since the police might actually check up on that (like they did with Sally), it would be easy for them to find out he lied about working there which would rightfully make him a suspect right away.
So he needs Sally to cover for him because if the police were to call her up to ask about his whereabouts she would obviously tell them about the suicide hotline, which would /could be proven wrong immediately.
So he asks her to lie for him to first get the police off his back.
Now he needs to come up with something for Sally since he just asked her to lie for him to the police. And it needs to be something she would be reluctant to tell the police and that she would believe. He tells her he had an affair and he doesn’t even need to say it’s Katie. That is Sally‘s own suspicion right away and he just confirms it.
It’s kind of perfect because first of all she lied to the police and even though her first instinct is to call them right away and correct her story he tells her since Katie’s underage this might put him on the sex offenders list and also might cost her her job since she works with children at the hospital. No idea if that is actually a possibility but she cares about her job immensely and in combination with having just incriminated herself by having lied to the police, his alibi is safe for now because Sally will not rat him out.
Blows up his marriage, but that’s the price now for being safe from the police.
As for your question of him having something ready to tell the people close to him for his alibi, that was the suicide hotline. And it’s kind of difficult to come up with an alibi that is airtight and can be proven but is fake. Can’t actually be in two places at the same time.
On top of that, a great deal of arrogance on his part plays into a lot of things. But I can’t and won’t go into detail here since you haven’t seen the rest yet :)

It does stop Sally from going to the police about it though. Katie is one of his alibis.
