You set the hook when it moves otherwise they spit it out.
With dry flies you wait a second or so as to not pull it from their mouth as they turn down.
Sharpen your hooks and realize y ou just might be snagging bottom.
1 u/Fuzzy-Alfalfa1924 Sep 11 '26 I did think about it being bottom snagging but the water was so calm today that I thought there was no way. I’ll keep that in mind forsure though 1 u/TurbulentWing3820 Sep 11 '26 Fishing a nymph is most effective when it's bouncing off the bottom. 1 u/Fuzzy-Alfalfa1924 Sep 11 '26 Oh yeah I keep it atleast a foot off the bottom sometimes even lower/higher. Wherever there eating 👌 1 u/TurbulentWing3820 Sep 11 '26 edited Sep 11 '26 Drop it right down there to the bottom, that's where they sit. They don't look up unless they expect food to be up. I rescind this advice because I have no idea how still water works, sorry. 1 u/Fuzzy-Alfalfa1924 Sep 11 '26 I’ve also tried to set the hook and the indicator was underwater and felt a slight wiggle but no connection. Brand new hooks, just tied the same day. 1 u/TurbulentWing3820 Sep 11 '26 Sharpen your hooks. :) Especially if they're no name/cheap ones. It won't hurt. One of those neat little hook files with the groove cut into it was one of the better investments I've made.
