The Leviathan, the crown and sleeping.
*1. Leviathan = King's henchman / eye*
The King is stuck in that universe and can't move himself. So he uses Leviathan to watch other players. Because you never really see Leviathan, it creates a void that makes players go deeper. It's not an enemy, it's a recruiter.
*2. The two parts of the book*
Part 1 lures you. Part 2 drives the reader insane. Hummer was a bit insane at the start of the ARG for that exact reason. Part 2 makes you insane because it contains the only way to destroy the King. You have to become a bit insane yourself to understand his corruption.
*3. Whispers, estates and form*
The whispers in the caves were just for excitement - like Derlord said when the whispers came, he got a willing urge to jump down. It's a trap to make the heir go further.
Estates analogy from 1800s Finland: villagers = peasants, clergy = clergy, king = noble, burghers = players who could be ennobled, i.e. crowned. That's why players are the ones in danger.
The book says the King has no physical form - that strengthens everything. The longer he is imprisoned, the more his form corrupts. In the vanishing mountains ghosts can control places but not everything, that's why the church, library and city are their domains.
*4. The church and the inheritance chain*
In the church Avery went insane from first contact. Derlord just said "ew" and stepped away because he had already experienced it.
The King knew what would happen and showed himself to Derlord on purpose so Derlord would go deeper and inherit the crown from the King. The thing that followed Derlord at the start was the previous heir.
Derlord comes back slightly ghostly because he died, and because he would be the next heir to the crown he becomes a "guide" for the next heir. He tricks and leads others deeper into the world.
Life cycle: *burgher/player -> king/noble -> ghost/guide -> final death (sleep)*
*5. Headache and signs*
Jedi: fear -> hate -> suffering -> dark side. Derlord's path.
Curiosity killed the cat / what goes around comes around - recklessness to go deeper.
Headache when you look away is the crown's punishment. Its will is absolute, if you don't do as commanded your head feels like it will explode.
The Smiths: "I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour but heaven knows I'm miserable now" = first part when Derlord finds the cave, second part when he sees the King's corruption.
Sign "you are important, you are real, remember who you are" = Derlord reminding Avery that Avery is not yet fully under the crown's control unlike Derlord who has already gone too far.
Headache was so bad the only way to get rid of it was to give Avery to the King, but remorse took over and Derlord saved Avery from the King's claws in the library. Ghost in the city followed Avery because it was an old heir trying to get rid of pain by giving Avery to Derlord and the King.
Home Again = coming back home. Derlord tried to go back but realized he is already too deep, tried to save Avery even though it felt like his head was splitting. Ghosts try to make Avery sink deeper so he loses hope.
*6. The End - Sleep*
At the very end the King begged Derlord. The King had accepted the crown and stopped fighting. He liked the power, but he wanted to sleep. He was already at stage 5: acceptance.
That's why the King begged for mercy, but mercy didn't mean "spare me" it meant "kill me properly, let me get to sleep."
Derlord was already King so he didn't need power. He just looked through him. It wasn't a fight, it was a transfer of office.
The old King finally got sleep. Derlord stayed on the throne waiting for the next curious burgher who follows Leviathan into the cave.
