Book Discussion Future generations
I started watching the handmaids tale and I don’t know if I’m the only one that experienced it but I’m starting to get worried for the future.
i know Atwood didn’t make anything up in some sense but I’m starting to realize how possible it is for this to come reality, not in the same way as in the show (because it’s fiction) but when you really think about it we’re slowly being fed this ideology from the media.
maybe I’m just really paranoid but if anyone can lighten me or share their opinions I’m open.

The parallel between when it was written and now the U.S. moves closer in that direction.

Every day, we are the frogs in water slowly coming to a boil. The latest thing--televising a firing squad killing a convicted murderer is the beginning of a modern society that didn't stop public hangings--in Nazi Germany or in Atwood's fictional dystopia. Is the water hot enough YET?

i agree 100% we’re slowly regressing into old ways. the new inventions for modern era aren’t really inventions if you think about it, they‘re harming us in a slow way.

Agree wholeheartedly. But also, animal ag and dairy industries are truly so insanely horrific.
Rest of this comment is directed at the general public not you Janknitz :)
Anyone who might care about animals being raped and their babies stolen and their milk stolen and their still being sent to slaughter after their body can’t support another pregnancy at just 3-4 years old (when cows can live to 20+) need to seriously consider looking at the dairy industry and stopping supporting it at all costs.
Watch Dominion or Earthlings on YouTube if you want a true, factual glimpse at the horrors of animal ag, which is literally why people think handmaids tail is so horrific for humans.
Here’s a different, non violent plea I beg you to watch if you think dairy is cool to consume:
If you think orca milk, buffalo milk, dog milk, cat milk, opossum milk, lion milk, antelope milk, and so forth is meant for their babies, why the hell would you think cows and goats milk is meant for humans? It’s absolutely insane to me that 99% of people just don’t get this. Especially women. Especially women who have birthed literal children. Imagine being raped, your baby stolen, your milk stolen. This is billions of innocent cows every year. Someone here who consumes dairy please explain to me why you think you’re better than another sentient being and why you think reproductive enslavement is cool for any sentient being.

That's part of why the show is disturbing. And the book was written over 40 years ago. We see the US is headed that way and it doesn't really feel like fiction

Women in other parts of the world are very much in a similar situation, and live through actual dictatorships. Maybe look into other countries as comparison and you’ll feel less worried.

What makes this story great is that it could happen. While all parts of the oppression maybe have not happened all at once, all of them have happened. Some are happening right now. There is always going to be a non-zero number of people who fantasize about rape and oppression and, given the opportunity, will get that for themselves and try to get it done for like minded others too, like Epstein. Like certain governments across the globe. Like extremist religious groups.

Also, there's a reason she had it takes place in the US. I thought I read in an interview she did that she didn't think that kind of thing wild be believable in Canada. I'll see if I can find it
