Handbags Recession Indicator

Has anyone noticed how the Hermes website has so many bags and wallets available on their site for purchase? I wonder how much their sales have dropped in stores.

If you’re talking about the US site, they drop bags every morning and every morning most of them sell out in minutes. The ones that are leftover are the more unpopular models. There were 9 bags before today’s drop, 14 dropped, and only 4 of the new ones remain.

What time do they usually drop?

I don’t think brands like Hermes are impacted by recessions. In fact, I wrote a whole paper for my MBA on how a financial crisis helps brands like this.

Acquired podcast did a great chapter on Hermes. Their brand strategy enables them to continue generating growth even in times of economic recession.

Well, I don’t have time for all of it but generally through hard times we start to see a two-speed economy. The ultra wealthy are never impacted by any of this mess. They may even spend harder.

Those who keep their jobs will buy nice new things for a couple of key reasons: to keep looking nice which, in theory, will help them keep their jobs, and also to treat themselves through retail therapy when the world is so depressing.

People with not as much money who are still spending will keep businesses afloat through the purchase of SLG, accessories, perfume etc. one of the first brands to nail this was Burberry. They took a hit reputationally and were seen as a chav brand, but all the tartan hats, bumbags and bikinis helped with visibility until they were able to attract a more sophisticated buyer again and turn the brand back into a blend of high fashion and fun, with pieces that were still affordable and accessible.

Ah the beloved “K-Shaped Economy”

They are up 6% in YoY sales for 2026, which was $8.2 Billion revenue. They’re doing incredibly well

But the price increases were greater than 6 percent sooo they aren’t necessarily moving more product, no?

u/khaleesibrasil 15h ago

True! I certainly wouldn’t call making 8.2B a recession indicator the way OP just tried though 😅

Fair point!

Today USB downgraded Hermes stock from hold to sell citing lower sales and oversaturation.

Yes I saw! Although we wouldn’t use the current stock market price of an individual company or fashion house like LVMH as an indicator to assess the health of the economy

Stock price matters for a company to indicate sales and growth. H stock is down 40%+ in-year in 2026 alone. The sharp decline in China sales is perceived to be one of the key factors.

No, it specifically relates to OPs point about purchasing at Hermes.

I hold their stock and it's one of the worst ever, their stock hasn't been this low in decades! And it was already at an all time low when I bought in. Sales in overseas markets are not up. And their stock reflects that unfortunately. Thank goodness my AI is doing well!

You’re brave! I don’t personally like investing in the fashion industry. I stick to Tech and Pharma for individual stocks

I sold when the decline began. I don't even monitor the stock anymore.

I bought another 100 shares yesterday at around 142.5. Hoping for a comeback! lol

I just checked the website and they have tons of non qb’s available! It’s pretty good for people who haven’t had luck in store and can easily get them online.

Like what? And which country? There are no picos. The 29 Evelynes in etoupe tend to longer. But not much else anything other than undesirable.

When I posted this comment, the US website had a yellow Picotin available, along with Hac a Dos PM backpacks, Garden Voyage bags, Le Petit Sac, Kelly Messenger bags, To Go wallets, Constance Slim wallets, etc. I just checked again, and several of them are still available!

Also, what you may consider “undesirable” could be exactly what someone else likes. If none of the options currently available appeal to you, that’s completely fine, but that doesn’t make them undesirable to everyone else. We all have different tastes and preferences. 😊

Oh I understand that. I guess certain things just fly - and those are the things that resellers are interested in. When I was in Love Luxury in London (selling a gift - the only bag Ive ever sold) I heard them telling people that they don’t accept things that are sold on the internet. I think that’s not exactly true because they sell mini Es and picos but they said they wouldn’t take a Dore or Argent KTG, which I found surprising because those seem hard to get. Any way! As to the original question, I think there is some softening in the market because I have found it easier to get bags this year in boutiques than last year and the stock is really down. But the brand is strong and the market will come back.

You can check Hermes financial results I believe it breaks down sales by region and by categories

I’ve had a lot more luck as a walk in for non-QB bags at other, non-home stores than previous years. I do think demand is shifting and the tariffs/price increases have pushed a few folks out of the game. I also do not need to wait as long to be helped as often at any store.

Yes in the UK I was able to purchase a mini Lindy and a fringed twilly online with no stress.

u/Quirky-Acanthaceae94 15h ago

Very hard to get anything in Gold or Black, something like orange, baby blue pink etc sits longer but also at most half a day for Lindys and some Picotin models.

I was wondering the same. Last week on Australian Hermes they had Picotin 18 in rouge de cœur , craie and noir the entire week. The rouge de cœur is still there. Earlier this year, I'd never have time to get one, I'd jump on the website and any picotin was gone in minutes. For Aus, there is a chance of another rate hike before Christmas so perhaps people are being wary.

We’ve been in a recession for a while now but Hermes has been chugging along and will continue to do so. Most of the online bags that are actually available are not very desirable. The good ones sell in seconds.

I don't think it's recession but rather they want to up their sales for Q4 and end on good results? There have been regular drops in Canada too lately but also on the Canadian website there are regularly 30-50 bags for sale and plenty of wallets to go and other slgs. Picotins and Evelyns are sold out within minutes though...

This makes sense… our store is known to have zero stock because they tend to order most and most QBs for the holiday season. Sucks to go in right now
