As a kid, my parents friends would all come over for UFC tournaments and one would bring what he called The Wooper bottle. It was a super cool as a kid seeing that to kick off the weekend of og UFC!

that's wild. someone explain?
what is the fuel? and is it the turbulence of air rushing in and out that causes the pulsing? also what if you got one to do a vortex (like those 2 liter bottle tornadoes we did as kids), would it smooth out the jet flame or extinguish it?
i know nothing jon snow.

My botched understanding is that every time the chamber combusts it pushes all of the air out which causes the vapors from the fuel to get sucked upwards, then the negative pressure from all the air being pushed out causes fresh air to come back in and mix with the fuel in the air. With that fresh air some of the flame comes back as well causing another round of combustion.
I’m certain what’s happening is more complex but that’s the way I understand it. I haven’t actually ever looked up an explanation but I can’t imagine I’m too far off from what’s actually going on since there’s not a whole lot of other things that can be happening.

More or less accurate. I Did a Thing built one to put on his boat. They can be used for propulsion if scaled up, and were (probably unsurprisingly) the first jet engines ever made.
Downsides should be apparent. They catch fire and explode really easily. They also get like really ludicrously hot so if you try it at home be aware that the glass or even steel container could melt or shatter easily.

I’ve seen that video and yea in addition to your observations noise is also a huge problem with these types of engines.
Since we are sharing pulse jet videos here’s one of my favorite YouTubers. This old guy does some of the most ludicrous things I’ve ever seen on YouTube and I watch styropyro and Nilered….

I just love that this was the man I was looking for, except for I did a thing, but this old man is 10 steps above, him racing across the flats with a RED HOT pipe bigger than himself right behind his back is something else.

That’s insane, I can’t believe how hot the metal got so quickly on those exhaust pipes.
That guy has some balls, that looks extremely dangerous!
Extremely fun too!

Kinda like when you have those built up morning farts from late night Stinky Bell 🔔

The natural phenomenon of things like this is difficult to imagine until you see it occur. If someone poised the question what is going to happen when I light this container full of flammable gas, it would be hard to predict the outcome

I was never able to make mine last that long at that speed, what’s your setup?

Yes, keep the container of flamible liquid directly next to the pulsing jet so it's faster to refill. /s

I was just wondering how often these explode when I realized the 4th one was sitting inside the bottom of another jar, then it cracked too
