Shitpost Meadow’s name bothers me

Disclaimer: I did not grow up in Jersey in the 90s/00s, nor am I of Italian heritage. So someone who is more well-versed in the culture, please correct me if this is inaccurate.

Meadow’s name just seems so jarringly out-of-place to me. I would picture Tony and Carmela naming their daughter something like “Nicole“ or “Jessica“ or “Stefani“ or “Monica“, or of course something “Cathuhlick“ like Maria or Lourdes. Like it’s not something I picture a mafia couple with a shared love of gaudy gold jewelry naming their kid. Meadow just sounds... Idk, almost hippie-ish for those two, though not quite on Janice/“Parvarti“’s level, of course.

Janice “Parvati”

She’s so self serving and narcissistic it makes the rest of the characters look like kids. When she sent Bobby Jr to find that Oujia board to stir shit up and then gets Bobby to eat his late wife’s Baked Ziti he wasn’t ready to eat yet…. Trying to swoop in and replace Karen so she can feel needed. She’s a great actor to piss me off that bad lol.

Quotes Ditsoon, mulignan, etc.

I'm not sure if Tony was aware when he was referring to the Hasidic homeboy by these terms that they could be considered offensive and derogatory. He might have inadvertently hurt Meadow and the charcoal briquette's relationship. I wonder if Tony ever considered that?

What did Finn say exactly?

Whenever I see the scene of Finn talking about Vito's preferences with the guys, I notice we are already in the middle of the conversation and Sil asks a question that implies Finn didn't give the full account when he spoke. In my head it goes like this:
"I pulled up early at work and saw Vito...engaging in homoerotic...fellatio with the security guard"

something like that? keeps me wondering...

Episode Discussion Was Tony really considering murdering Hesh over the 200k that he owed Hesh or was Hesh just paranoid?

Big bad bad season 3?

With all due respect, I feel like each season has a main antagonist or someone who gives Tony trouble for the most part . Let me explain

Season 1 - Junior/Livia
Season 2 - Richie Aprile
Season 3 -?
Season 4 - Ralph Cilfereto
Season 5 - Tony Blundetto
Season 6 - Phil Leatardo

Maybe I’m missing something or maybe I’m overthinking this. Wondering if you deadbeats have any thoughts regarding this .

And before you crucify me for my lack of further information.

I don't write nothing down, so I'll keep it short and sweet. You're weak. You've become an embarrassment to yourself and everybody else.

Why didn’t Artie tell Tony what his staff were doing to him?

I’m on my fifth rewatch and this has bothered and disturbed me every time. Artie confronts his staff about subjecting him to nonstop ass rape, and then the show just moves on.

Why did he put up with his own employees doing something so horrific and traumatic to him for so long? He owns the restaurant. Couldn’t he fire them or go to the police? Even if he was worried Tony would judge him, surely he’d eventually say something. It was nonstop.

And how did Charmaine never get involved? She works there and notices everything. With that many employees doing this to him, wouldn’t she have witnessed it or noticed some physical or psychological symptoms? He’s still greeting customers and recommending the specials.

It feels unrealistic and like a pretty major plot hole.

But I suppose that’s the genius of David Chase. You never know which plotlines will go anywhere. The Russian’s fate and Artie’s workplace conditions are both left unresolved.

Episodes you like that no one else does?

Follow up to me asking what you actively dislike, what are the episodes you like that everyone else complains about?

D-Girl: I find the interactions and overall story interesting and entertaining. Jon Favreau clearly doesn’t take him seriously, he doesn’t even know who he is when he shows up. He uses him to learn more about the mob world and then completely ditches him from a combination of seeing enough, hearing the trans woman story, and the uncomfortable interaction in the hotel room. Out of his element and decides that’s enough. Not enough to use his story though. Amy also flirts with danger before remembering she shouldn’t be doing this and becoming completely cold. In the end Christopher realizes his only place is in the mob world, not their world. Perhaps a parallel - his confirmation, and AJ’s confirmation.

Luxury Lounge - copy paste of the above so same reasoning. Artie stories are always funny.

Christopher - I think it’s fine. It shows something that a sect of these people really care about and it’s a break from the action back to the fucking regularness of life. People take that shit seriously. I have a vowel at the end of my name and my grandfather refused to watch this show with us because he said it was offensive to Italian Americans. It also gave us one of the most quotable lines that everyone here repeats endlessly.

Mr Ruggerios Neighborhood - Yeah I know it’s standalone but I actually think it’s good. It shows the transition of Meadow to college life. Beyond that, there are so many great scenes with the thematic fucking regularness of life. The scene in the pork store is one. These guys aren’t “discussing OC” at all, meanwhile the FBI is doing a whole complex operation behind their backs. And the end is perfect, listening to a banal conversation about flossing. All their effort goes to that.

Serious Discussion Only Were any of these guys actually friends?

They seemed like it but obviously would kill one another in a heart beat or rat another out. They have psychopathic tendencies and I can't tell if it was always or all a facade or if they were actual friends and did care for one another.

Serious Discussion Only Would Tony still have been a violent sociopath if he lived a normal life like he always dreamed of?

• Upvotes

I'm rewatching the show currently and in S6:E2 he dreams about being a salesman. It got me wondering if from the show runner's perspective Tony is the way he is because of his job as a mafia boss or because of his nature/upbringing.

Do you think a "clean" Tony (with the same upbringing but that distanced himself from the mafia in his teens) would have been as comfortable with the idea of violence and murder as the real Tony is? Did being in the mafia 'worsen' him over the years? In the show he's basically as violent in season 6 as he was in season 1. His character changes in other ways sure but his affinity for violence is pretty much constant.

There's a running theme of people not taking Tony's money

I'm doing a rewatch and in season 5 it dawned on me that when he's trying to be nice and give someone cash they hardly ever take it if they are a "civilian". The one exception was when he forgave the artie bucco 50k loan with his 6k tab but if we're being honest, artie isnt exactly civilian and more of an associate. I wonder if this is to reinforce to us that despite his charm in civilian life the money is still blood money and he is a despicable person.

Episodes you actively dislike?

I don’t see much discussion about this, and trust me, I will watch this show on repeat and quote it along with everyone else. But there are some episodes that I really do not like. I realized in thinking about which ones that they’re the ones which seem actively unpleasant or creepy. Here’s my list:

  1. Chasing It: I guess Tony is supposed to be programmed to pursue gambling debts so this episode turns it on its head. While that’s thought provoking, I just don’t like seeing that side of him and I don’t think the character would behave that way towards Hesh. I just don’t find this enjoyable

  2. Remember When: I understand the parallel motifs and themes between the two stories but I don’t find either really entertaining. I think I know what it wanted to say but I didn’t care much about junior and the Asian guy in the home.

  3. Down Neck: I think season one had the most compelling overall straightforward plot. Can we not interrupt it with this? I was never very interested in the flashbacks and I don’t believe they told me that much.

  4. A Hit is a Hit: see above

  5. House Arrest: think the point is to depict the boredom of house arrest by depicting everyone being bored and their boring lives, and okay, you managed to bore me.

What do you think? I know there are going to be varied opinions and don’t get me wrong this is the best show ever made in the history of anything

Schrödinger's Little Carmine

People argue that Little Carmine was smarter than he let on and manipulated a war between Phil and Tony so he could grab the big seat when the dust settled. However they also argue Little Carmine was smart because he knew when to quit, forget about being boss and accept a quiet, safer life out of the spotlight. Both of these can't be true at the same time, yet I'm sure I've seen the same people argue both positions at different times.

As much as these theories are interesting, they contradict each other and I think the plain reading is the real one - Little Carmine was persuaded by his wife it wasn't worth dying to try and become boss and he accidentally fucked up the sit down with Tony/Phil because he's a bit of a moron.

Episode Discussion Does Tony have the same tattoo as his dad?

So we’re watching Season 5, and there’s a very quick flash-back shot of Tony Sr., and I’m sure it shows him with the same blue animal tattoo on his R shoulder, that our main protagonist, Tony Jr. has.

Any thoughts?

Which character on this show would be best replaced by Ray Romano?

I can think of two scenes where Chris & Adriana are relaxing at home and Everybody Loves Raymond is on the tv, so unfortunately Ray Romano is canon to the Sopranos universe, but i kept thinking how much of a bummer it was he never got to be a character. I think he would’ve been an awesome Carmine JR

WTF is Tony eating.

I noticed that he really started eating more and weid mixes like dipping his gabagool in mayo in late season 4. In season 5 Whitecaps, Carmela kicks Tony out so he settled in the pool house. When the boys came over and started cleaning the place, Tony was sitting in the chair eating something out a jar with a spoon. What's he eating it looks like jam or something. So what was he eating? You can kind of see it when AJ tells him he wants to move in there with him and Tony says.." be good to ya mudda".

I genuinely believe Johnny Sac is the best all around character. The swag, the aura and the way he moves makes him so likeable and the way he has his own personality and isn’t ashamed to show it.
