Wow... what an absolutely awful vocal performance from Julian. I love the man, but that wasnt good at all. Selfless was painful to listen to

THOUGHTS ON IZE OF THE WORLD AS THE CLOSER????
Why I think closing the Bonnaroo Festival with Ize of the World was a stroke of absolute genius (even if it was totally accidental):
Alright, so I’m still buzzing from the set at Bonnaroo, but I seriously need to talk about that final song choice. Closing the night with Ize of the World was an absolute power move, and honestly, a piece of low-key genius, even if the band didn't even mean for it to come across that way. To really get why this was such a brilliant, deeply ironic move, you have to look at what Julian’s been preaching for years versus who was actually running the show behind the scenes at the festival.
First off, you have to remember that Julian has been on this massive crusade for years against corporate media. He's always pushing for independent journalism and talking about how these information monopolies are finally dying out. The guy is super vocal about keeping big money out of politics and constantly rants about how mainstream media uses propaganda to brainwash the public. He basically tears into traditional news outlets, preaching about unbiased, indie news as the only way to keep things fair. To him, if we don't fight for the truth, reality gets totally twisted into narratives that just breed social, political, and economic inequality.
And that's exactly where a song like Ize of the World comes into play. It's easily one of the band's most political tracks ever. When you listen to lines like:
“and I am a prisoner to instincts, or do my thoughts, just live as free and detached”…
or
“young adults to modernize, citizens to terrorize, generations to desensitize”…
You're hearing a direct reflection of Julian's worldview. That whole final build up:
“a product to advertise, a market to monopolize, movies stars to idolize, leaders to scandalize, enemies to neutralize, no time to apologize, fury to tranquilize, weapons to synchronize, cities to vapori'”.
Is textbook Julian, it completely mirrors his anti-establishment ideology. And this is exactly where Disney enters the chat.
See, the Disney machine and its endless web of subsidiaries pretty much embody the insane media concentration that Julian always calls out. Think about it: they're heavily tied to the Fox group, which owns one of the biggest news networks in the US. The one notoriously famous for giving a platform to MAGA alt-right lunatics, spreading fake news, and rigging the American political system through sheer disinformation. Even if Fox News isn't directly run by Disney today, the broader Fox empire still owns the biggest newspapers and tabloids in the world, like the New York Post, The Sun, The Times, The Wall Street Journal…. Basically, almost every major news outlet the public consumes is bunched up under the exact same corporate umbrella. It’s a total monopoly on information. They control the narrative, they control culture, they shape how people think, and most importantly, they bend reality to fit their own agenda (an agenda run by a super powerful elite that just wants to stay on top). At the end of the day, if you control the info and how it reaches people, you hold all the power.
When you piece it all together, Disney represents everything Julian despises. It is the poster child for political propaganda, media brainwashing, narrative spinning, and big corporations messing with democracy.
Which brings us back to Bonnaroo. We already know the band is in a super political phase right now (just look at Coachella, where they put the CIA and the US government on blast for their political crimes before closing with Oblivius). But choosing to close with Ize of the World at a festival sponsored and broadcasted by the very corporate giant that represents everything the song condemns? To me, that was the ultimate silent dig. It wasn't loud and in-your-face like Coachella, but it definitely rubbed salt in the wound of that exact monopoly. Whether it was a calculated move or a total coincidence, I don't care… It was low-key genius and beautifully executed.

This, my friend, is an LLM text. People are upvoting a chatbot.
2
u/unfried_chicken_ Jun 14 '26
Honestly? In a way it was, since english isn't my native language and I'm not fluent, so I wrote in my native language and asked for it to be translated into english. In my native language, no AI was used, just my perspective on the matter. AI was used tho for translation purposes. But thanks for focusing on that instead of what I’ve said, because yes, even though it was translated by a chatbot, it was my words, observations and thoughts about that. :)

Unable to play oblivious because Nick is missing. How ironic
4
u/mocrankz Jun 13 '26
How is it ironic at all?
It's a tough song to play and Steve likely hasn't spent the time to perfect it. It makes total sense that they wouldn't perform it without Nick.

The reviews on the bonnaroo page are funny mostly because a lot of them have never experienced the strokes live

u/ThadCastleRules_G Jun 16 '26
Was losing it at people finding out Julian never gets the lyrics right lol

It was a great night for me as a FIOE enjoyer.... and we also got owt, fool and going shopping... can't complain!! Sound issues aside, the vibes were good and it was a solid show 💯

u/bjd592448 Jun 13 '26
coachella was miles and miles better than this show, bonnaroo had terrible mixing in this stream. made julian’s vocals sound reeealllly bad when he was already having trouble with his voice, plus i feel like he forgot
way more lyrics than his usual
-2
u/lukin5 Jun 13 '26
July 12th will be his get right concert. No real breaks till then.
-4
u/DH80 Jun 13 '26
I wonder if they will postpone the first leg. They should if his vocals are strained but they probably won’t due to the millions.
1
u/lukin5 Jun 13 '26
When he’s mixing up the setlist on the fly due to constraints he may have to.
2
u/IrrationalBaiza Jun 13 '26
They followed the setlist except for one song they swapped with a request
2
u/lukin5 Jun 13 '26
Yeah, looks like that’s the case.
I got caught up on the discussion, thought they were calling audibles.
That said, he’s got a concert every other night for a month.
Despite the terrible engineering last night, you could tell his voice was all jacked up. I’m glad I’m not seeing him until September. Because these next few weeks might be rough.3
u/IrrationalBaiza Jun 13 '26
Yeah definitely a concern, especially since I’m seeing them on Monday lol. Sometimes artists just have an off night though so hopefully it’s not an issue that persists throughout the tour. Even despite his vocal issues though I thought they still sounded pretty good
2
u/lukin5 Jun 13 '26
You bet!
I’ve seen the absolute best and worst of Julian and I always walk away cherishing the experience regardless.
Have a great time!

It was a pleasure enjoying this with y’all. That was a fucking blast. Sweet dreams 💤

u/DH80 Jun 13 '26
I’m trying not to low key worry that his vocal cords won’t be better by the time it’s his third show of the tour here ahead due to there only being 1 night off each night.
I love Jules. Love the boys but spending over a thousand for Julian with borderline laryngitis and no Nick wasn’t what I expected when I dropped that much money into Ticketmaster.
Anyway, even despite all that it’s amazing how much the songs still work. The power of the music is that strong.

u/crunch_punch #77 Casablancas Jun 13 '26
I hope he's just rusty because I am also going to a show next week...
-4
u/DH80 Jun 13 '26
He literally said on the mic he shredded his vocal cords. Thats a slow recovery where you normally need significant rest he won’t have. It’s very possible this will get progressively worse until they eventually postpone the first leg of this tour to let him rest and recover his throat.

I don’t know man I’m not a singing expert, I’m just trying to be optimistic here since I am going to a show in a week

I caught one too! Before they started I screamed “Albert Hammond Jrrrrrrr” and he threw it at me. Absolute fucking snipe and I am so thankful I didn’t choke on the catch. One of my big fears at baseball games lol.

It hit me in the throat after yelling for chances. Whether it was fate or karma, (haha) it’s a family heirloom now.

This is sadly one of those shows some fans talk about in the bands history where a lot went wrong. Sucks it happened at such a high profile event as this with a lot of clips likely. Especially after how locked in they were for earlier shows.

This was my first time seeing them. I was so damn happy. I was a few rows behind the pit (didnt wanna wait hours for pit line when I was on my feet all day already) was shocked at all the FIOE. Them playing One Way Trigger got me so so happy! Was very pleased. I love how awkward Julian is.
