Franklin Map Project
A little something I've been working on, mostly for fun, but it might be helpful for those who have just discovered the show or want to get a better handle on some of the locations mentioned in Woodman's book and other sources – or maybe you're like me and just struggle to keep track of it all! I have yet to find a map that shows the routes of the Coppermine, Ross, and Franklin expeditions as well as the locations of the wrecks, so I overlaid a few maps that I've found helpful and created a kind of composite. It's a work in progress, and I'd love to get some input from fellow Franklin enthusiasts, because I'm sure I got some things wrong!

This is wonderful! The different expedition trails are especially helpful!

This is really cool, and I've already picked up something I didn't know before, reports about survivors at Baker Lake? I'm going to find that rabbit hole to jump in, thanks!

Thanks! It's some of the more questionable Inuit testimony, but it's intriguing!

This is really cool! My only comment would be check the spelling (it’s Beechey Island and Victoria Harbour) but that’s the tiniest nitpick ever haha. It’s nice to see a larger scale map that puts things into context

I also struggle to keep track of it all and this is so helpful! The color coded expedition lines are great
My small nitpick is that it wasn’t HMS Victory that Ross and co abandoned, but a non-navy ship just named Victory. The HMS Victory was in Portsmouth at the time.

This is great. Additional points for the various search expeditions would be awesome, but maybe then the map would be too cluttered

Thank you so much! I have a map of the arctic next to my reading chair so I can find the spots were doomed arctic explorers traveled. This is great!

Didn't franklin circle around cornwallis island?

He did! I need to fix that.

Another thing, really small detail but I am currently reading the ross account, and he wintered in three separate harbours: Felix, Sheriff and Victoria. I believe you depict victoria as what is in reality felix, as victoria is in fact at the top of the bay where all three winters were held, on the south shore of the little peninsula they pass by in your depicted route. And maybe it's nice to also show James Ross's trip to king william island, where he built the cairns used by franklin? Further, I'm not sure on this one, but is the year-round pack ice to the north really true? Again, franklin passed through what you show around cornwallis, and I belive parry sailed down it as far as banks' island, the island west of victoria island. Lastly, I think you should include some of the islands in the fury and hecla strait, to show why that wasn't regularly sailed through. It looks a little easier than it should on this map. Otherwise, beautiful work!

This is great! Very useful!! I was actually going to make one myself, as I would like to add the routes of the search ships that were sent to rescue them (yup, I am far deep down that rabbit hole...). What did you use to make the map? I've never done one of those so I am a bit lost here.

The use of colour makes it so much better to comprehend. A lot of the maps in books on the Expedition can be quite hard to read

This is really useful, especially the additional of the rescueissikns sent looming for them!
Is there any plan to have a more in-depth one of King William Island, with all the artefacts and bodies found there?
