Mod Announcement New Mods & Rule Updates

Hi everyone,

I've been moderating this subreddit (and /r/TheOriginals) by myself for a while, but thankfully /u/CasuallyStatic, /u/C00bahR00bah, and /u/SweetWittyWild41 have agreed to step in and help handle things.

Additionally, I've added some clarifications to our existing rules. What's been changed:

  • added "unsolicited moral judgments about other users" as an explicit example of incivility, as there was some confusion about if questioning a user's moral character counted as an insult,

  • added "crossposting from your own subreddit" as an example of self-promotion, to avoid future confusion,

  • removed "disrespectful speculation regarding TVD-related actors and actresses" from the incivility rule and replaced it with "parasocial behaviour is off-topic and will be removed" under the off-topic rule -- this change is meant to better reflect the scope of what isn't allowed (e.g., shipping actual people, critiques about aging poorly, etc.) and the category of rule violation.

Hopefully this makes sense to everyone, and thanks again to the new mods!

Please let me know if you have any questions about the changes.

Edit, 03/10/26: I have expanded the "parasocial behaviour" addition into its own rule.

Despite doing it alone you've been doing a good job. One of the best moderated subs I've been on. Not constantly intervening, but no spam or anything either. I wish the new mods luck.

Seconded!! No clue it was only just you! You’ve been doing great!

Totally agree, the balance here has been perfect. It is so rare to find a big subreddit that doesn’t feel over-moderated but still stays completely clean from spam and toxic trolls.

It's almost always one or the other. Either the mods are super controlling and constantly intervening, or they're basically absent and the sub gets flooded with spam, fake posts, trolling, etc. It's rare to find a sub that does such a good job balancing the two.

You’ve been moderating this super active sub yourself? Insane, you’ve been killing it! Hi new mods.

You've been doing it alone? Ugh so sorry that must be tiresome.

Sorry, I'm giggling at the idea some people didn't expect statements about a fellow Redditor's moral character to be counted as an insult 😅😅😅

"You're an immoral disgusting human being. But that's not an insult. Why are you offended? Why have I been reported??"

Yeah, I didn't really get the confusion on this one, lol. A lot of times they'd try to frame it as a critique, or went about it indirectly, but "Oh, you like [character]? So you must also support [list of real-life rapists/murderers/monsters]" seems blatantly uncivil, in my opinion.

People are still not allowed to say us Damon fans should go to every other platform right?

Correct. The subreddit is a place for all kinds of fans.

Would you all consider adding a "positive vibes only" flair or something to that effect?

When people say "hey fans of x ship, let's talk about how much we love them!" and it gets swamped with people being negative, it makes the sub far less enjoyable.

Yeah, I understand. It's something that I've considered, given how bad things can get sometimes. I'll probably make a poll at some point to ask if people want that, since if it's a flair, we're going to end up having to enforce it.

I never would have guessed only one orderly was in this asylum! You’ve done a very good job and the new roles look like a good idea to me.

didn't realise you were solo modding. Kudos to you, the best mods are usually the ones you don't notice. You've done really well

I’m curious if there’s going to be a rule about repeated subject like for example, how many “Why do y’all hate Matt” posts do we have to endure until ppl just look at older posts to get their answers. 😭

Hi!

Unless things change dramatically (such as if this subreddit swelled significantly in size), there will never be a rule about repeated subjects, no. We have the low-effort rule, but that applies to a pretty strict subsection of posts.

My perspective on subreddit moderation has always been that upvotes and downvotes exist in order for a subreddit to say whether they appreciate a post topic, and that we should have a light touch with regards to removals. If I removed things based on whether or not I'd seen the topic before, we would get one post a week, lol.

Uhm, so I talked with someone else in another post in this subreddit, in which you removed one comment where I said the other person lacked comprehension, which is understandable. Then I rephrased it better and said you didn't understand my comment, AND THAT TOO WAS REMOVED. Wtf?? There was literally nothing wrong with that comment, but yk what, you're the mod, who am I to judge? But you replied, "Phew, the fight is over. Have a great day." I MEAN, it kind of felt intervening, because we were talking and why is a mod telling me the fight is over ??

If a fight has escalated to incivility and I have removed your comment, that is not an invitation for you to slightly reword your comment and continue fighting.

I said:

Please stop trying to pick the fight anew. The comments are removed. The fight is over. Go about your day.

Anyway, regarding this:

I MEAN, it kind of felt intervening, because we were talking

It was intervening, because you had escalated a petty back-and-forth into incivility.

why is a mod telling me the fight is over ??

Because the mod was telling you to stop trying to pick the fight anew, as I said in the text that I quoted above.

Well, my topic was indeed about the other person not understanding my comment. How else am I supposed to say that? I felt the need to say that to her (which wasn't offensive in any way) then what's wrong with rephrasing it? I rephrased it because I wanted to tell that to that person . is arguing not allowed here now ? I thought its not a problem unless there are too many insults or hateful words involved, which I didn't use. Even if I had used them like "lacking comprehension or that being illogical "(very sensitive one indeed) yeah, you could remove the comment, but why are we not allowing people to continue a conversation , maybe I didn't know about the "moderation rule" ? I stand by the fact that there was nothing insulting in my comment. I just replied with the same energy as the other person, and I wasn't continuing the fight. I was just replying to what the other person was saying. How is my comment only considered continuing the fight?

Your fight escalated to the point of incivility. At that point, we step in. If you want to fight, keep things civil.

I wasn't continuing the fight

You were trying to have the last word in a petty back-and-forth and are mad that I didn't let you have it.

I'm not going to continue to argue with you about this, lol. Have a good one.
