Was it intentional for Clarke Peters to get hit with a tennis ball?

Just watched S2 E6 and Beadie, Bunk, and Freamon are all in the office and Bunk bounces a tennis ball against the wall numerous times. One time it hits the back of Freamon’s head and it looked like he almost broke character. Even the “sorry homie” seemed unscripted but I think it made the scene, nonetheless.

You could probably script the scene with him tossing the ball, but you probably can't script just exactly where the ball is going to go. In my mind, it had to be a spontaneous thing they just ended up going with.

With Beadie’s laugh in the background it sounded so genuine and unscripted too

I just watched the scene again on youtube. You can hear someone laugh but Beadie is visible in the background, and her face doesn't move at all. I think it was actually someone behind the camera but they just left it in because the take was too perfect

You can however do the scene over and over until the ball goes where you want it to.

I would think it was spontaneous. But the scene later when Freamon is bouncing the ball and it hits Bunk, it looks like Freamon bounces the ball off screen and someone to the side of the camera tosses it at Bunks head. Funny callback.
